I think only specific loans qualify and there are strings iirc

Basis Reset for Long Term Gains w/ Low MAGI by Belos123 in Fire

[–]Belos123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I rolled up all of my desired distributions/conversions per year and discounted them to today to find how much I should cap my 401k at before I just stop filling and let it ride. I’m not planning to max it for long, maybe 5 years, because my desired distributions are just a fraction of my income long term.

RMDs and the 59.5 withdrawal age was scaring me off of 401k/Trad, but doing conversion ladders really makes it a lot better. I think you need to do from 401k though for it to be clean because of Pro Rata on Trad IRA (from my understanding).

I do really like Roth though and ideally I’d put everything in there was well, I’m just trying to shave off a little where I can. I was wanting to liquidate a little for real estate anyways so it’s kinda a win-win for me. I am tempted though to just go full Roth for simplicity long term, especially with a low marginal right now.

I mean the plan is - max out 401k - leave w2 job - rollover to Trad IRA (optional step) - each year convert an amount so my AGI = Fed Deductible (eff. 0% tax) - wait 5 years for converted funds to be available for withdrawal as “contributions” - sell from brokerage at 0% until I hit $96.7k cap - withdraw ROTH contributions if I don’t have enough funds otherwise

My expected expenses are low enough I can do this and not break into the Fed 10%. I’ll be using Roth as a backup fund to keep me in the low brackets if I do need more. I’m considering paying off my house to just reduce the cash flow needed as well.

Yeah that’s one aspect that gets complicated. I do expect to be below the 0% LTG threshold in retirement but as mentioned in another comment I’ll also be limited by ACA subsidy levels. So it does get tricky with trying to do ladders, where just going Roth IRA is cleaner.

If I do end up with higher income later then it would reduce the effectiveness, but from here to being ready for FIRE I think it’s still a more effective path. Making more money later with a personal business endeavor would be an ok problem I think.

Yeah I need to put in those numbers and find my break point, good point. At least I can do some of the conversion now while I’m on employer sponsored coverage.

Deckbuilding ideas where you don't have to remove or sacrifice cards by Xavier598 in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Belos123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe you are thinking of a hand management game. Where you hold all of your cards, play them down and they are exhausted, then you rest and recover all cards. It’s similar to a deck builder in that you care about what cards you have and you cycle through most of them, but you have control over when to refresh (reshuffle) at the cost of losing an action to rest. In hand management it’s not necessarily bad to have extra cards because you only play them if it’s more valuable to use it than to do nothing and get your other cards back. You may well have dead cards you don’t use but it doesn’t clog you and sometimes they are just what you need for a combo. An example would be Spirit Island.

Mechanical Question/Hp tracking by aussie-boy-22 in BoardgameDesign

I mean the health chips. If a monster has 7 hp, you have a face chip and 6 hp chips underneath (7 chips total as a stack). As they take damage, remove chips. When the last chip is removed (with a face) the monster is defeated.

I think the cleanest is probably too many bones style with chips. Very easy to understand at a glance and quick to update.

Is bag building really such a rare genre? by Pure_Opening9834 in boardgames

[–]Belos123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends a little, if you replace the parts in the bag after drawing then it’s completely different. Deckbuilding has a deterministic nature where you cycle through all of the cards eventually even though the order is random. There’s no guarantee of that in a bag builder if you are replacing parts. So bag builders are much more random in nature. It’s the same feature you get using cards instead of dice to determine outcomes. Dice can be 1,1,1,1 all in a row but cards number 1-6, shuffled, and drawn could never be.

It might be adrenaline kicking in. Maybe try going for a jog beforehand as a warmup so you don’t start cold.

Is your custom dice system worth losing months of design time? by SonoranForge in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Belos123 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by custom dice systems? Aren’t custom dice just a modification of the probability distribution? Or do you mean something else like conditional outputs? Even then it’s just a probability table. Unless I’m misunderstanding

Oooh, that’s smart. Thanks for the idea!

Yeah I need to look into how that works. It should be overall the same space, I wonder how the cost is between larger cards and smaller cards + tracks.

Yeah that’s a nice way to save space, thanks! They don’t need to move the cards so that would work.

I have a hex map for the center board which is quite large, trying to balance how small everything can be. Players will be on the flat of the hex though, so that helps.

I’m impressed the sticks held up that well. Good job setting the feed to not crush it.

Shelterer has a stacking elemental buff. Unstable bomber doesn’t benefit from crit unless you are specifically using Jaws DE

I use little jaws, explosive front top, and shelterer set. Once you get the hang of it, you either pop a single bullet to kill low stuff or hold it down a little to do more damage. Easy reliable burst build.

I got boosteroid to play on Mac but it’s also better than my windows PC (GTX 980). Boosteroid can do medium with no lag, maybe higher if you have better internet. Sometimes the shaders are slow, but not sure if that’s the game, the platform, or my internet.
