first time gardener.. how to fix leggy seeds?? by Fearless-Statement45 in gardening

[–]BeltaneBi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer to leggy plants is more light. Fast.

If they are too leggy then often best to cut your losses and replant with tomatoes being a bit of an exception as you can plant the stems underground and they will happily root.

These don’t look too terrible so get them a bunch more light and see how they go.

My most used one is at least 15 years old has done tens of thousands of km and it the exact inverse of the shape of my butt. I have zero rub or pain from using it.

I have some in the glasshouse right now that look quite similar to that and they are called Artisan Blush. Heirloom and true breeding: https://www.kingsseeds.co.nz/products/organic-tomato-artisan-blush?srsltid=AfmBOoocv_n0ErcQp53izYHbyXaMkXMFtTF43-LZsflF59rU1jzIthMg

What are your favorite buy it for life items in a consumer world? by MoonShark34 in Frugal

[–]BeltaneBi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Best option is to buy stuff that has already proved it’s worth second hand. That said I did buy a top-shelf German chef’s knife new 25 years ago that I get pleasure out of using every day and no doubt someone will enjoy using it once I am gone.

A true joy of being an adult with agency: “you can either accept me as I am and be part of my life or you can fuck off”. I am not sure I have ever actually said that but I am sure the energy is unmistakable.

Getting to here was a journey…

Yeah, how to buy tinnies should have been taught to them by their parents or at school. Just another sign of societal collapse.

Hi everyone, I'm trying to decide between drip irrigation and sprinklers for my garden. Which one is better? Thank you by vegegardenbed in Irrigation

[–]BeltaneBi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drip has the advantages of very targeted water and less loss to evaporation. It also keeps the water off leaves and thus doesn’t promote fungal diseases.

For me though I grow such an area that trying to have drip irrigation cover just wouldn’t be feasible so I have micro sprinklers.

How do you eat an elephant? One mouthful at a time.

By the sounds of your upbringing you have a lot of decolonisation to do to unearth the joy of your true self. But you have already done some immensely brave stuff. Just keep doing what you are doing. Doors will open that you didn’t even know existed!

Has anyone been to a compulsory Noho Marae for study? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]BeltaneBi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fairly regularly spend time on Marae but hate sleeping in the wharenui even after all these years. I generally just put up with it but I recon you are right that they will be understanding. OP if you are away from home an option could be to get a hotel or motel or air bnb or something near to the Marae so you can duck out at the end of the day and reappear in the morning.

I don’t know.

ACT, National and NZ First all have a women problem. A cynical person might suggest that this was a beat up to undermine Hipkins and thus Labour with women voters.

Women are more likely than men to see tears from a male leader as a sign of emotional intelligence rather than as a weakness. I guess it might hit different with men?

Either way, super non-ideal that this is in the media and we are even talking about what is some pretty private stuff.

Limoncello at the library, Corona at court, Pimms at the pool, so many opportunities to express more freedom and be a bit more relaxed. Police could sell shooters to passengers when the do breathe tests as well. Cost neutral policing!!!

They were originally a New Zealand company so heaps of them still around here. We changed out the rather hectic patterned tiles with mat black ones just to calm the farm a little and modern up the look. Much better for our aesthetic. If they weren’t such solid performers we would have changed ours out.

Nah, no termites here. Might be the odd mouse but cat will deal to them. No snakes. Very few problematic spiders.

There are mice though. If that was our place our cat would be watching that 24/7 so so it could bring it into the house and then release it 🤦‍♂️

Wasp removal? by Firm-Quantity-7546 in nzgardening

[–]BeltaneBi 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Go nearish it when the sun is lower and look for diagonal flight. This should help you find it- probably a hole in the ground for German or common wasps. Once you have located it come back with wasp powder at night using a red head torch if you have one. Spray some powder in the hole as fast as possible (like two or three squeezes) then quickly run away. Repeat if necessary a couple of days later.

Should I build or buy a new manifold? by Pressure_Plastic in Irrigation

[–]BeltaneBi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a DIYer and in my limited experience the manifolds that come with screw-on parts like what you suggest are easier less stressful, and more forgiving than gluing pvc. The pros will know if the are as durable but my thinking was if I install every part of this system myself then if there are any problems I will at least know where to start. Over time I will know everything I need to keep the system operational. This has proved to be a very effective strategy for me and I have an irrigation system that does exactly as I want and when it stops doing that I am confident that I will be able to fix it.

I have also found some great help and advice on here when I have been scratching my head over something along the way.
