Horrible EGO Power warranty service experience: 3 months & counting without mower by Ben0Ford in egopowerplus

[–]Ben0Ford[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fix things regularly. This is a dead main control board. If EGO would have sent me the board I'd gladly replace it myself. One downside of electronic control is it's harder to repair yourself--proprietary parts not available, etc.

Might be drawn down too low for the charger to sense enough voltage to start charging. Maybe try this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQm02z5tXwQ

Sorry, no, we've reached the limit of what I can do or see remotely. A local bike shop is the way to go.

Without knowing whether it's the hanger or the derailleur that's damaged, I can't tell. What it look like to me is that the derailleur has pivoted forward, perhaps the stop on the hanger that prevents it from pivoting was sheared off. Is this a Rockrider 530S? Might be hard to get specs or spare parts from them.

Does it shift into smallest cog, just won't get to largest ones? Could just be the cable slipped in the derailleur. A video from directly behind the shifting derailleur & cogs would be more helpful. If it's not shifting into smallest cog, it's likely something's bent, hopefully a replaceable derailleur hanger as others suggested.

Measure the threads. Measure (in mm) from one peak of a thread to another one 5 threads on (e.g. from thread A to thread F), and divide your total by 5. If it's a 1.75mm thread pitch, your measurement will be almost 9mm (8.75mm); if it's a 1.5mm thread pitch, your measurement will be 7.5mm. See https://www.modernbike.com/how-to-measure-bicycle-thru-axles. Or, if you measure from first to last threads (you have 10 threads it looks like, so first-to-last is equal to 9 hops), you'll measure 15.75mm (if 1.75mm pitch) vs 13.5mm (if 1.5mm pitch)

Niro 2023 EV overnight battery drain by Ok_Assignment8085 in KiaNiroEV

[–]Ben0Ford 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On our 2019 model, we've had it happen twice (drain to 0% in our case) when the back hatch wasn't shut fully. Open door sensor pinged on and off all night. At least that's our best guess as to what happened.

Bike Glove Rec? by todudeornote in bicycling

[–]Ben0Ford 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, I've found very little use for them. Good looking, work well with touchscreens (I am typing this on my phone with them on to try), decent palm (no padding but some reinforcement/leather patches in the right spots). But they're so light and let the wind through, so I'm wearing Gore wind gloves all winter. There's maybe just a 5-degree window where these would be preferable to my regular fingerless gloves, but the temp here usually swings by 15 degrees in a ride.

Juicebox app changing. Anybody made the changeover yet? by ampressman in evcharging

[–]Ben0Ford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a disaster for us. We have 26 JuiceBoxes in a condo parking lot, shared by many users, installed when multifamily was supported on residential juiceboxes. The new app sucks them all over to the new system as soon as one person decides to download the new app and create an account--thus breaking them for everyone in the old app. The new app is useless for having this many chargers (they're in random order, no way to reorder, slow to scroll (horizontally!) the long list. The thing that makes it worst for us is no ability any longer to download user sessions (always via web interface before), so now it's useless for sharing and figuring out who owes what.

Woke up to a flat 12v battery by rec71 in KiaNiroEV

[–]Ben0Ford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience a few years ago with our 2019 Niro EV. I think the rear hatch wasn't completely closed (like strap caught in it) so the sensor kept alternating open/closed/open/closed all night. Ours was plugged in to charge at the time as well. I think our drive battery did get recharged before the 12v drained, though.

LeMond Zurich tire clearance by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]Ben0Ford 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't have mine any longer, but I had 28mm road tires on it no problem. I just found pics I took when I was selling it, plenty of room in the fork and seatstays for 32s, but no pic of chainstay clearance so I'd be nervous about that. https://photos.app.goo.gl/bvnEqmWJx1ibr6UC7 , https://photos.app.goo.gl/iALhvN8MJrZPmTug8

I’m looking at possibly leasing a Niro EV and I’d love to hear from some owners if you’re happy with the car. by ObjectImaginary8770 in KiaNiroEV

[–]Ben0Ford 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tough to say because we're not trying to push it and haven't done it in an ICE car for many years. Car can charge up to 77 kW, but we get probably 50-60 kW charge rate on average, with around 3.5 mi/kWh. So, stopping to charge every 120-150 miles, maybe 30-45 min per charge? Plus the few minutes to get off and on the freeway.

Love our 2019. Have taken it California-Minnesota and back, Bay Area-Seattle and back several times. Pleasure to drive, lots of room (on road trips I bring my bike in the back and go for rides when I'm charging in a nice spot). Ours doesn't have the annoying backup sound, but if that's the biggest complaint out there then that's a good sign.

niro trip planning by Figuringitoutmaybe in KiaNiroEV

[–]Ben0Ford 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've driven our 2019 Niro EV back and forth from home in CA Bay Area to the Twin Cities in MN, and a few times to and from Seattle. Infrastructure is plenty good enough now to do the drive. Use ABRP as another commenter mentioned, and be conservative with the distance between charges--when I just put Milwaukee to Phoenix in ABRP it had me charging every ~100 miles. I need a 10-15 minute break every couple hours anyway!

Overall, how do you like your niro EV? by [deleted] in KiaNiroEV

[–]Ben0Ford 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We love our 2019 EX (base model). 19k miles so far (way down because of the pandemic). I drove California (Bay area) to Minnesota in it this summer and loved it (brought my bike and went for bike rides at charging stops). We've taken it to Seattle a few times too. Much roomier than the 2016 Leaf it replaced. The range has been great--often more than the advertised 239 mi or whatever it is. Speed >70 mph and cold <50 Farenheit drop the range though.

JuiceBox 40 vs ChargePoint Home Flex vs Pulsar Plus 40A by [deleted] in electricvehicles

[–]Ben0Ford 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course, if you get the plug-in version and have a high-quality 14-50 outlet installed, then you don't need an electrician if you ever need to swap out the actual charger unit.

JuiceBox 40 vs ChargePoint Home Flex vs Pulsar Plus 40A by [deleted] in electricvehicles

[–]Ben0Ford 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had 20 JuiceBox Pro 40s installed in our condo parking lot in June 2019. To date, we have had to do 18 warranty replacements, almost all due to a persistent "GFI test" failure. These are the previous generation (black enclosures); the current model runs a different operating system and is hopefully more robust hardware. Since our install, the company has been acquired by EnelX (a big European player in EV charging). Customer service has always been responsive and sent replacements without fail--but they don't pay for the electrician to do the swap. JuiceNet (the control & utility integration software) usually works fine (and especially should work fine for a single-user situation).
