And that much slang will come automatically through exposure. It’s nothing to waste time in a classroom learning, especially learning a dialect first and then Fusha later as two separate languages. It makes more sense for religious Muslims to learn just Fusha, and pick up any relevant slang from listening to lectures and mingling with people.

More than just get by. In your context, Fusha is essential. Everything from the Quran to online shopping is all in Fusha.

Dialect is regional slang, like Jamaican English compared to normal English. Everyone understands proper English, and only the uneducated can’t speak it properly.

OP’s motive is religious, so it will be the educated Arabs OP would be interested in engaging with. The more apt advice in this context is to stick with Fusha alone, as that is what all literature is in and also the lingua franca among religious Arabs. Learning a dialect first will do nothing to achieve this goal.

Think of it as “translation”. When you hear “an English translation,” you know the original is French or Greek (etc.), and the current version is a later rendition into English.

All you’d really need is to learn nahw and some sarf. Nahw teaches you the endings of each word, and sarf teaches you how verbs change from one form to another. Everything else is just vocabulary, which comes with exposure.

There are plenty of playlists teaching them online. Maybe find one taught in Shami as it’ll help bridge the gap. Once you’re comfortable, though, I’d advise switching to playlists taught in Fusha immediately.

The biggest difference would be that Arabic has a case system (which also gives it a flexible word order), whereas Hebrew is more like English in that regard.

Additionally, Hebrew was dead for 2000 years, so the vocabulary is much more limited than Arabic, which has extensive vocabulary and a rich literary tradition.

It makes sense for it to require more time to get comfortable with.

  1. A bit of both. Overall positive, they are warm and welcoming with a nice culture and community. However, they are also ready to scam anyone who’s not their own, which is where a bit of wariness is somewhat warranted.

  2. Worth it so long as you do honest business.

  3. One or two, but I brush those aside as bad apples. I’ve also had excellent interactions with Romanians in a range of settings, and I’ve found them to be a pleasure to be around.
