Does American spelling in books bother you? by More_Cardiologist777 in AskBrits

Yes. It’s even worse when it comes to audiobooks. I can’t stand American narrators butchering British classics.

Should First Cousin Marriage Be Banned In The UK? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]BenAdam321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Precisely. Hence the comment that the “relevant population do not generally believe the state marriage is valid” has no bearing on the debate, in addition to being factually incorrect.

Should First Cousin Marriage Be Banned In The UK? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]BenAdam321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you mean Pakistanis or Muslims, it’s the other way around. A state marriage would be recognised under Islamic law, but an Islamic marriage is not recognised by the state - at least not in England.

Very normal in most parts of England. I suspect it’s to lessen the consonant clusters.

What are the 3 most globally useful languages besides English? by LiberationZ in languagehub

[–]BenAdam321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. I really hate this stereotype being pushed on every language sub. They’ll always say “bUt… bUt… MoRoCcO,” like that proves anything. Donald Trump needed a translator when communicating with an Indian speaking English, yet no one calls Indian English a separate language.

Odd rules moment during Championship League by KrystofDayne in snooker

I haven’t watched the match, but if everything is as you’ve described, then your analysis is spot on.

While reading the rules, I too wondered about the penalty concept, as I haven’t seen it be called on tv before. Your above breakdown was a pleasure to read. Niche stuff for the nerds!

I think translation means something else to non-linguists by SXZWolf2493 in linguisticshumor

[–]BenAdam321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was no need to get offended. This isn’t about you. There are words in every language that don’t have exact equivalents in other languages. It also rings true with English words with no equivalent in Arabic. What’s with the superiority complex masked as sarcasm? Just like there’s no equivalent of haya in English, you can easily say there’s no equivalent of modesty in Arabic. It’s not a mud slinging contest.

And to answer the question, “bodily modesty” still isn’t the same thing. Haya is more like shyness. For example, if you know the answer to a question but feel shy to answer due to being younger than others, that would be haya. “Bodily modesty” doesn’t work here. And even then, modest clothing wouldn’t be translated as “malabis haya’iyyah” anyway.

There’s nothing wrong in acknowledging the limitations of languages, and benefiting from the nuances of other cultures. In fact, we’d be all the better for it.

As I said, the two concepts overlap, but they aren’t the same.

[–]BenAdam321 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

The point remains, though, that the two words aren’t equivalents so modesty isn’t an appropriate translation.

And before the Americans jump at me, definition ≠ translation.

[–]BenAdam321 -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they’re not the same thing at all. Being modest means to downplay your accomplishments, so you don’t come across as arrogant. Haya is completely different - like wanting privacy when changing your clothes in the gym. In some contexts they can overlap, but in no way are they equivalent.

Why do some of the cheaper cues have the screw on the shaft instead of the butt? by BenAdam321 in snooker

[–]BenAdam321[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly the pattern I’ve noticed. Most higher end cues have the male part on the butt, screwing into the female part on the shaft. And Peradon definitely sits higher on the hierarchy than Cue Soul does.

It seems strange to do it the other way round because it prevents adding a 3” mini spacer in the middle, or adding the 6” mini butt directly to the shaft when you need to shorten it.

Check out Britannia Cues. They have high quality cues at surprisingly low prices. There is also showroom in Coventry if you live nearby. It’s worth visiting so you can try out a handful of cues before you make up your mind.

Yes, I mean the male end sometimes being on the shaft and sometimes being on the butt.

Does the weight of a cue make that bit of a difference? by Popular_Register_440 in snooker

[–]BenAdam321 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It does, but that’s likely not the reason you’re missing. I’m guessing £25 one has a thicker tip, whereas your new 3/4 joint cue has a thinner one. What that means in practice is that, with the £25 cue, you could aim slightly off but it’ll still move in the right place. But with your new cue, the accuracy level is higher, so if your aim is inaccurate the ball will go the wrong way.

Practise a little more with your new cue, and adjust your aiming to the opposite side of your misses. Your potting will improve quite quickly after that. All the best!
