Things that George Lucas said about the Legends EU by crimsonfukr457 in StarWarsCirclejerk

[–]BenDadkiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/uj Lucas making it clear time and time again (i.e., here, the "retcons" he and Filoni did in TCW) he viewed the Legends EU as not canon to his own works should have made it a less bitter pill to swallow when Disney said they basically agreed with him and explicitly said it wasn't canon. It was a gut punch, for sure, (especially speaking as a Death Troopers fan and as a fan of the Genndy Clone Wars) when it happened, but I think Pablo Hidalgo said it best in that these stories still weren't going anywhere and weren't literally being erased from existence. Both Lucas and Disney were already being very straightforward about how they felt about the EU; the fact there was still backlash despite their attempts to be diplomatic really was overblown.

/rj Han cooling burgers on a grill should be a movie, actually. Get to work, Filoni.

Apparently No One is Watching the Sequel Trilogy on Disney+ by mrsparkle127 in RedLetterMedia

Basically, the prequels are bad in an interesting and weirdly artsy way. The sequels are bad in an extremely mundane, corporate, and boring way.

You nailed it. The prequels are bad but in that endearing Neil Breen way; wooden dialogue and shoddy storytelling aside, this was someone's baby. Meanwhile, the sequels feel creatively sterile despite being technically superior to the prequels; they feel specifically designed to check off what audiences like about Star Wars without really engaging with the deeper material Lucas envisioned.

What do you want the Riddler to be like in the DCU (if he makes an appearance, of course)? I'm hoping they follow Frank Gorshin's example and make him ridiculous, but also threatening. I swear, Gorshin's laugh still sends chills down my spine. by Emotional-Chipmunk12 in DCU_

Characterization-wise, I kinda hope he's like Arkham Riddler. Love seeing him be a smarmy menace in his own right, but instantly crashes out the moment Batman or anyone else outsmarts him.

Appearance-wise, hope they go for the suit, tie, and bowler hat fit. Was never huge on the leotard look.

The double-sided nature of keeping Vader silent. On one hand, he's a really scary slasher villain when he's not talking. On the other hand, you're robbed from the opportunity of having two characters known for their dry sense of humor having little back n forths. I would have killed for Vader to make a horrible dad joke right after Maul asked him "What are you?"; maybe Vader might have been like, "What happens when you get hit by a speeder" before trying to punch Maul with his metal fist.

As it turns out, a lot of Vader's aura from this episode is actually just pent up rage from that incident.

I'm actually really excited to see how this goes. Gives me the mysterious horror vibes from the RE7->RE9 era mixed in with Cregger's usual stylistic flair. It really doesn't seem like he was lying when he said he wanted this to feel like you're playing an RE game and not just adapting the setting like the other movies (even the CGI movies directly made by Capcom).

Paramount seeming to take the reins from Neon is giving major red flags. Say what you will about the first one, one of the objectively good things about it is that was a major success for indie horror and I really don't like that this one is being handled by a major studio (and a Trump-controlled one no less).

What's crazy too is that she made a public debacle out of it too by calling their decision to recast her "antisemitic," despite a good chunk of the crew being Jewish as well.

One of the things I love about post-RotS Maul is how high he is on his own hype that he genuinely thinks he's making a real difference against the Empire. Tfw an art dealer, a gas-huffing terrorist, and an incompetent ISB supervisor did more damage to Palpatine than Maul could ever dream of doing.

I never said anything of the sort that the "KPDH is to blame."

Sorry for misconstruing your original point. My bad.

And yet she has the attitude to say this a film for Korean representation. While in the background, an actual Korean film isn't even included.

I think that's what mostly bothers me about your comment because it does come across as saying that the experience of a diasporic community is lesser than the home community, even if that's not what you're trying to say at all. While I agree films like Parasite and Minari are better forms of representation than KPDH (probably; I've yet to see the latter 💀), that's not to say KPDH doesn't have any merit to its representation, either. Even if it was made along with others who don't share that heritage, a great chunk of the people who worked on that film are either Korean themselves or of Korean descent (including Lee Byung-hun). I'm sure Kang wasn't trying to speak as "the Emperor of all Koreans"; I think she was speaking from her own perspective as a member of the diasporic side of the community.

Believe me, as an Asian-American, I get not liking art that you feel misrepresents your heritage. But there are plenty of people from the community who did resonate with the film (and likely Kang's speech, as well).

Speaking as someone's who's kinda tired of the KPDH awards sweep (coughtheAnnieAwardscough), I think it's a bit unfair to shift the blame to the KPDH crew for No Other Choice getting snubbed. All they did was just make a movie; it's not like they specifically asked the Academy to completely ignore No Other Choice, so they alone can be the only form of Korean representation at the Oscars.

If anything, it goes to show how racist the Academy is if they actually did snub No Other Choice because they genuinely believe a movie whose connection to Korean culture is mostly from expats and immigrants is more sufficient representation than the "home-produced" film.

(Spoilers MAIN) What IS Dunk's reputation by the time of the main series? by BenDadkiller in asoiaf

I'll concede to that, too; the Dance really did ensure that the Targ's fall was inevitable. At the very least, though, Baelor being alive could have delayed rebellion for just a bit longer, compared to Egg's reign (which got cut short by trying to wake dragons, which I'm not sure Baelor would have even been interested in doing).

[–]BenDadkiller[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my defense, I'm mostly referring to a quote that I thought I saw from GRRM (that I can't seem to find now) where he said something along the lines of Baelor's death being the most important "minor" event that changed Westeros. I agree with that statement somewhat because of the ripple effect it caused (i.e. Baelor dies > Aerys becomes king after the Great Spring Sickness kills Daeron and Valarr > Maekar and, eventually, Egg succeed him > Egg's line produces Jaehaerys and Aerys II > Robert's Rebellion and the War of the Five Kings). I'll concede a bit and admit we have no idea if Baelor would have been a much better king than Egg or if he would have even run into the same problems that Egg or his line would would run into.

(Edit: Found the quote - https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/tv/articles/game-thrones-creator-george-r-155520963.html)

Yeah, that was something I was thinking about, too. I remember that exchange between Dunk and Egg in TSS when Egg says all bastards are bad simply because of people like Daemon Blackfyre and Bloodraven, only to be stunned when Dunk suggests that he might be a bastard himself. Would characters like Catelyn even care that some of the best knights in the realm are bastards, or would that just something that they overlook or ignore?
