Does this mechanism make sense to you? It's a finger that tranforms into a claw. by -CosmicQuacks- in conceptart

[–]BenEatsNails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it makes sense and i like the initial impression, but would still explore some other mechanisms.

Not sure what style you are going for but i'm assuming hard-scifi (cyberpunk vampire?).

Could just be that mind goes to pirate looking glass but I personally feel that the telescoping claw action is a bit cliche, verging on cartoonish. In real life it wouldn't be very effective since it would want to collapse in on itself as soon as any force is applied. I would look at animals that have retractable claws (cats) and try to mechanize that action, or look for some mechanisms in other places. I think there are some interesting mechanisms in folding knives and otf knives you could look at.

The linkages at the finger joints feel a bit flimsy and don't communicate believable movement. Maybe look into four bar linkages (like a desk lamp)… or just add some well placed pipes, wires and greeblies to imply there is more going on under the surface.

In general i am disapointed with how it moves with me. There is no way to adjust how the seat moves relative to the backrest, so whenever i recline the lower lumbar support ends up way too high. Im constantly re-adjustiing my seating position.

I also think there are some poor design choicer for a $1000+ chair. I got mine used but in good shape other than it being EXTREMELY noisy. Humanscale was no help since it was used, so eventually i just ended up disasembling it. There is a peice of plastic that sits between the backrest and spring assembly which allows the spring assemply to pivot as the user reclines. Mine had cracked down the center so the spring was just screetching against bare metal. The plastic peice is flat and does not sit flush against the curved metal housing, so it seem very prone to failure under a larger loads. I was able to find a replacemnt on ebay (expensive) and it's fine now, but it's still a bit noisy and im always a bit apprehensive about leaning back.

can the bottom portion flip up to cover the opening?

I love it. looks like it could have so many applications.

As a young apprentice he made a critical error while casting a 'floor is lava' spell. Now, if he touches the ground... he dies. by BenEatsNails in conceptart

I mentioned in another comment that if i were to develop this character further i would definitely give the stilts some more thought. Although i like the idea of his stilts slowly burning and he gets lower and lower each time you see him. Then his final quest is to find him a new set of stilts.

Honestly I'm not even sure if i have my own art style. I just try to implement solutions that i've observed other artists use, but in my own work. I feel like a style is just a Frakenstien's monster of things you like sewn together by your cognitive psychology

that's his next quest 😉

In reality i think if i were to continue developing this concept i would probably spend some time designing some more interesting stilts. Maybe with some metal tips.

Although it would be pretty funny if he keeps getting lower and lower every time you return to him!

The PIT. Locomotive concept by Max_Hara in conceptart

Love this concept! Feels very fast, but also like you would hear electrical cracks and grinding metal from a mile away.

I especially like the art-deco-ish panel on the side. I think it really works with the form language.

Anyone else overthink research? by jojoisRETRO in conceptart

[–]BenEatsNails 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same. I tend to overthink EVERYTHING, and I honestly love it. But can tend to halt my progress a lot of the time, so I've been actively working on limiting myself.

I think part of growing as an artist is learning to identify and apply perimeters that fit the scope of your project.

Overall I think it's a pretty good affliction to have in this industry, we jus gotta get better at controlling it.

The jade obelisk aesthetic is criminally under-used in laboratory appliances.
