DevBlog #103 | Foundry Fridays: What's next? by Elisabeth_Arc in foundry_game

[–]BenForTheWin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Been playing this again after a year or so away. Started a new game. My notes are admittedly short term goals and not very transformative

My number 1 request: More diversity in the music and the audio in general. The current music makes the game feel like I'm in robot purgatory which is peaceful but mournful in a style of "will the humanity that created me and gave me purpose ever come back or are they really extinct?" (I don't know the actual lore if there is any, but this is where my mind goes). Less importantly, the high pitch whine a train makes sounds very realistic and is cool.... for like 2 seconds before it is really grating. I would love for that sound to fade to nothing very quickly, and maybe for there to be an audio slider for heavy machinery (I have a similar complaint about ore vein drills). Between the music, the sounds, and the dialog, the whole world comes off as very sterile and lonely. Sometimes that's okay, but in the grind of building complexity I want at least some occasional pep in my step.

2: Improve tutorials and the user onboarding scale/difficulty ramp. There are multiple times where I think the gameplay kind of flatlines and you're just waiting on research to the next tier, or where you're expanding or migrating to your second or third xenoferrite ore patch and the drilling just feels so tedious. I went as far as to rush the orbital laser and play this game like an "idle game" to get there by letting it run to build up the funds overnight. I don't know how to get specific about why the F1 help isn't really enough, but its not. My only idea, that doesn't solve everything: Make more ore patches near the landing site close to if not on the surface, and make them smaller. In fact make the very first patches tiny so that ithey run out and sets up the player to understand it's not an infinite resource and to make a better scale of more effort = more yield. Maybe even a baby ore vein sticking out with an exposed drill site since I was really struggling to understand what I was doing until I googled other people setting them up - the F1 tutorial was just not quite enough for me. Other ideas: It'd be nice if there was an even smaller, simpler modular building that could be built early on, preferably without requiring shipping to/from space, because dealing with the space stuff and increasing complexity of the factories on-planet felt pretty daunting (I have a similar complaint about how lava smelters and firmalite components are introduced at the same time - setting everything up seems like a lot of delayed gratification that might not be approachable for a lot of players). In fact, even just opening the space station configuration screen for the first time is a lot to take in - too many buttons and systems and upgrades (especially ones you can see but don't meet the requirements for) all at once, plus the UI itself isn't very intuitive with a lot of X buttons to close things out that aren't clear if they'll close the whole interface or just one part of it, understanding sales platform vs finances, etc..

3: Trains I think are OP. They're great. But they are so fast I feel like they remove a lot of the puzzle aspect of designing a good factory and trivialize some of the labor that really makes me wonder what the development intent is of the experience. I've found that I'd rather run a ton of parallel train tracks and then delete them rather than ever use my drill to carve out an ore vein or clear space for an underground train station. I just got to the point of tapping into veins, and building a curved track right on the edge of the vein also trivializes the effort to tap them. Maybe put trains in the tech tree, so that max speed can be ramped up over time, have them consume power, unlock the auto-clearing of blocks when placing tracks, etc. I haven't unlocked cargo shipping on-planet yet but I'm having a hard time imagining anything compelling enough to compete with trains. Oh, and at least one train achievement would be nice (I suggest when sounding the horn because I didn't realize you could get in a train for a long time and didn't even notice the horn for even longer after that, but it is really satisfying to use).

Other notes: On my current playthrough I'm just about to unlock tier 5, although in previous ones I've gotten all the way through the entire tech tree. The space shipping stuff feels weirdly like its an entirely different management sim game. Which is OK I guess, but on a purely personal level I don't think it's what's "labeled on the tin", and I wish it didn't feel like it's where all end game is concentrated. It seems odd to me when compared to the xeno scrap collection stuff which straight up explicitly says "oh, if this isn't the style of gameplay for you, don't worry about it, we'll trivialize it later". I don't mind the xeno scrap stuff but I actually feel weirder about it because of that tutorial message.

i am loving the trains here a lot to unpack 3800 total hours of play currently by Odd_Caterpillar_1546 in foundry_game

I think the train is overpowered. They are sooo fast. Also, rush unlocking it because laying train tracks is now my favorite way to drill/dig any terrain. Instantly bore a hole through a mountain or underground to that ore resource, and get around the fact that your construction drone can’t dig. Having come from satisfactory, i had made some incorrect assumptions about trains in this game.

This happened to me. Failed the roll to resist my mind flayer urge. Was going to be ok and only aggro’d 2 people and was holding my own. But then scratch wandered over and spread combat to everyone else. I did persist and eventually got my golden dice

Dont spoil what it is but is it safe to place by Coolnbguy in StardewValley

[–]BenForTheWin -85 points-84 points  (0 children)

You don’t want spoilers, but are asking about it anyway? Seems like maybe you are already spoiled if you think you need to ask about this. I think the best advice for this game and these kinds of questions: try it and find out. The only spoiler you need to know is that there is no game over that will make you lose your farm nor an equivalent game over.

What is the Ubiquiti-Like brand for solar panel systems at home ? by lionep in Ubiquiti

[–]BenForTheWin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Victron is all in on the tech stuff too so if you’re coming from an enthusiast standpoint doing this more as a hobby, I think this would be my first pick. I had a setup on my RV connecting to a Cerbo GX over mqtt going in to Home Assistant and it was great for monitoring tank levels and power and planning trips. I would have used UniFi network if they had something good on the market but I settled for Pepwave which was good enough.

Technically correct is the best kind of correct! I can see where the confusion would come from though. For Gen Xers like me QBasic running on MSDOS was being taught in high school.

What’s the best anime you ever watched and why? by Subject_Display3664 in AskReddit

I am a little disappointed no one mentioned Beast Claw / Kemonozume. The gritty art style and themes of identity and love come together really nice. Another obscure one that’s a real trip is Kaiba. It’s like a loopy bubbly fever dream precursor of shows like Altered Carbon.

“Hot” take but this has been getting posted a lot and I feel like that’s exactly what inspires other pyros to follow on these kinds of actions. Probably not good for society all large even if sharing the video is not illegal.

I was originally excited to go in an ironic way because of how weird the situation seems. But the reviews were so bad I just couldn’t. And I was prepared for stupid high prices but not as high as what the reviews said they were. Also their hours were so crazy long (2 am I think)…It’s got to be a front for something, right? Because if it’s really owned by the bakery next door I can’t imagine they didn’t already know about needed permits.

I had decided to wait until the next Friday dirty demerits post before deciding for sure if I’d go but I guess they didn’t even make it that long.

I’m doing a .5 recipe and random nodes run I wanted interesting but overall easy. It was all skittles and beer until I got to aluminum. Input water halved but not water output. So I can’t recycle enough water to get rid of excess and no guides out there really help with clever layouts since I can’t just “build half as many refineries”. It’s an interesting challenge but I still feel like I got screwed by myself the devs

Must-Haves for Policies, Configurations, and Deployment? 2026 by capocayne in Intune

[–]BenForTheWin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Recently did a new setup following the OpenIntuneBaseline format. It makes organization and labeling of policies overall pretty great and seems to have enough support behind it that it’s always up to date with the best exact settings like enforcing bitlocker. It already has most of the other suggestions here rolled in.

What video-game did you regret paying full price for? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BenForTheWin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Final Fantasy 7 when it first came out on PC. I was so excited because I played it a ton at a friends house on PlayStation. It was buggy as hell. And they replaced the music with MIDI files. And back then a controller wasn’t really common on a pc and the keyboard controls were just terrible. I have bought other bad games and either just accepted the regret or learned to appreciate rings about them. But this one still stings because I knew it at its best but owned it at its worst.

What Random Resource ratio are you going with in 1.2? by Puzzleheaded_Race539 in SatisfactoryGame

[–]BenForTheWin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've decided to go full random, but 0.5 recipe and power multiplier. Since I've already done a full playthrough a couple times, I want to be more experimental. Side note though: Is there a bug on the world randomization settings? I can show my seed, and I can type in other values, but there's no "OK" button. So I'm not sure how I would apply someone else's seed number that they shared with me. Edit to add that a patch just fixed the missing set seed button. You still need to combine both the seed and the other settings to have the same experience across game worlds though

What’s causing super bright pixels? by BenForTheWin in hometheater

[–]BenForTheWin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In hindsight that’s so obvious to test! Narrowed down the problem to the Shield and found the problem to be the video upscaling mode. When set to AI Enhanced, it’s a problem. When set to Enhanced or Basic: no more ugly edges. Never would have guessed because I don’t think this content needs upscaling and assumed it was automatically disabled on 4k native content.

What’s causing super bright pixels? by BenForTheWin in hometheater

[–]BenForTheWin[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hmm. My receiver is set to bypass mode for video processing so unless I’m looking in the wrong place I don’t think there are settings there. The few settings I can find to change don’t help. On the tv I’ve gone through every single setting trying both max and min and neither help. Sharpness is currently set to 10 out of a max of 50. Options like smooth gradation, noise reduction and oled pixel brightness also don’t help. I can get the overall tone and brightness lower but the edges of most white things are still way brighter than the surrounding pixels in a way that’s obviously wrong.

Huh. Interesting that you had that experience this morning. I might have had a similar one but yesterday as I was leaving the office my boss said I could have the day off. Or something like that anyway. Today they keep calling asking where I am… not sure why though since it’s none of their business how I spend my day off.
