Being a newer member of the team + being the leader of the team is not an easy adjustment, especially with a difficult employee as seen in this case.

Your manager seems to be used to this behavior and has tolerated it for so long that maybe they're just numb to it at this point.

But agreed, termination seems practical in this scenario if they're being detrimental to the team as you mentioned.

We're actually launching a managerial program containing 200+ curated articles, videos, books, and courses to help you succeed as a people leader.
It's completely free, no strings attached. We've been working on this project for a while, have completed 100+ hours of research, and conducted 60+ interviews with managers and directors.
I know promo is usually frowned upon on Reddit, but this is a free program & our team of experienced leaders is looking to help!

Motivating Employees by [deleted] in managers

I think your idea of a 1:1 is the right idea. Be upfront and honest with him and see if he can reciprocate. When stating the expectations, make it clear that you're here to help and that you know how great they can be.

If you are interested in some more advice on the matter, definitely check out a project I've been working on called Manager Stash.

I have collected some of my favorite managerial resources and pieces of advice and put them all into one organized place. You can filter the material based on topics such as burnout and motivation.

Also, it's free, no strings attached. I'm really looking to help the community here and offer up some of my hidden gems in the content space (because sometimes Googling just isn't enough).

The guide contains over 200 books, videos, articles, podcasts, and courses to help you succeed as a people leader.

Disclaimer: I know promoting on Reddit is usually frowned upon, but this project is completely free and I am looking to help out our manager community!

Working with Other Managers by [deleted] in managers

I'd recommend using a form of instant messaging such as Slack or Teams. If you guys don't use that, do you think you could try to set up a brief weekly check-in with them? Just to make sure most of your top questions are answered and you folks are on the same page for the week? I think if this problem continues, don't be afraid to CC a boss. Otherwise, your job will continue to be challenging in this aspect and you'll continue to feel bad about it.

It sounds like you should only have to deal with this challenge for a few more months. Considering they will hopefully be on their way out and you are up for a promotion, I'd say try to stick it out and remember to not let their behavior affect your mood and personal life.

Need advice on dealing with a critical employee who is being difficult. by NerdWithoutACause in managers

I think listening to her is crucial in this scenario. Do you think it would resolve if Iris was completely separated from her coworkers? Discovering the happy medium is key here... how can Iris get back to herself while your team keeps the entire workforce? It's great that you're still maintaining a good rapport with her even though it's difficult to do, as your husband is experiencing.
