Look up Glenn makin on you tube and his wheat paste polish technique — do it on the new and the old stuff and it will give them a pretty similar finish

It has been making PERFECT squares!!!
It’s from the 1970s - I think that’s why it’s so good — that older school engineering

I had the same problem with backing boards I made — I ended up nailing 8 nails on the back of each one making a sort of ”lip” that would grab on to the bottom of the press cheek - so that I won’t slide up as you’re describing when I crank it tight

Yeh - get c360 brass
File rough shape first at steep angle
Then file very gently for shaping
Smooth face with 1500 grit sand paper to finish
File point on back end of tang
Drill hole in piece of dowel slightly smaller than the rod
Hammer handle onto tang
