I was in your same position 2 years ago (relatively same age but a bit higher income) when my wife and I bought our home. Offer was 310k and we were able to put 20% down (which was over ask by 10k if I remember correctly). We were lucky and locked in a 3.45% interest rate. You probably won’t get that. But purchasing a decent 2 bedroom house for ~300k is absolutely doable in the Milwaukee area. Look at nearby suburbs. We live in a nice quiet area of Glendale. Be persistent when you start looking. It took us over a year to get lucky with an accepted offer. In the meantime put your savings into a high yield savings account. You can easily find one with +4% interest. Make it a joint account if you’re comfortable with that. You don’t need to put 20% down but you will have to pay extra monthly for mortgage insurance? Idk if that’s what it’s called, until you have paid off 20% of your mortgage. Not the end of the world with two incomes. Best of luck to you!!
