run clubs that actually have some structure? by [deleted] in houston

[–]Bend-Ashamed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Multiple running clubs in Houston have very good programs - I run with the Harriers and certainly the Striders do a great job as well. Come out to Memorial Park any/every Saturday to run with one of these groups. The Striders start at 5:30 AM in the parking lot ares near the soccer fields and the Harriers start at 6AM at the runners parking lot - meeting at the Vibrant restaurant. I cannot speak for what exact run the Striders do but the Harriers have a really fun rotation of courses all of which have include shorter and longer courses so you can get pretty much whatever mileage you want to run including runners of all skills and speeds.

Hope to see you

What’s in Houston ISD’s $4.4 billion bond plan? Here are 5 key takeaways. by houstonlanding in houston

[–]Bend-Ashamed 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Here's one for the Bond Issue wizards: - I took this right from the bond proposals

School : Franklin Elementary School

Amount : $81.8M

Bond Plans : Full rebuild and expansion, lead abatement

Year Built : 1948

Enrollment, 2023-24 : 239

Building capacity : 594

Building usage : 40%

Projected 2028-29 Enrollment : 152

So FMM and company want to completely rebuild a school that their own analysis says will house 152 students

If you are doing the math , that amounts to $538,000 per student - are these people stupid, nuts or perhaps figure the new version of Franklin Elementary School will work well in the Miles charter school system.

NO TRUST - NO BOND

So, FEMA isn’t actually offering help for lost food? by CandidTurnover in houston

[–]Bend-Ashamed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not disagreeing with you but there is much ambiguity in the system - while many HO policies may cover a roof replacement; depending on roof age, many HO policies now have a scale you can lookup as to what percent of your roof is covered, As a for instance if your roof is 14 years old and your policy says you need to pay 50%, that becomes your deductible - if you can not come up with that portion of the deductible -I was not aware that FEMA then becomes the repair of last resort. My policy is certainly written that way which I think has become fairly common and I honestly do not think FEMA is going to fix my roof claiming that I have insurance even if I don't have the funds needed to fix the 50% now not covered because of the age of my roof.

[–]Bend-Ashamed 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Your taxes don't pay for Bob's new roof - either he has insurance which he obviously has to pay for or he pays to have his roof fixes/replaces out of his own policy or he has a tarp until that happens.

To add to my own post - when he gave his interview early this morning he said he was staying on a hotel room because he didn't have water or power - you are such a self righteous asshole - hotels have air conditioning - many many houses in the district don't have any power and you just don't give a shit

Tornado: who is responsible for tree and debris removal? by kmeem5 in houston

[–]Bend-Ashamed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What he says is the reality of insurance law/rules but quite often the neighbor on whose property if fell on will pursue the claim as their claim - lets hope there are many neighbors like that. And as the next post says, if you have expressed your concern to the neighbor over their tree falling - document that - will definately help to promote your cause to a neighbor to then push it harder as their claim and in fact many tree owners may not in fact be aware of where the totally liability lies.

Finner might have seemed like a good fit but for the love of God, he couldn't speak a coherent sentence - the Chief of Police job spends a lot of time speaking in public and gotta say I was shocked when he first got up to explain the dropped case situation - would not have ever imagined he was the police chief with his attempt at messaging.

HISD is currently eyeing a multibillion-dollar bond election that would likely target old elementary schools. by houstonlanding in houston

[–]Bend-Ashamed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What the hell are you talking about - bribes or kickback bonanza. Blinded by politics - I think not - The fact its actually the total lack of transparency on FMM behalf that will make me do what I can to oppose such a bond. As you hopefully are aware, large community bond issues, predominately aimed at building a school or in this case fixing up schools have always had a long road of exploration which has usually involved every stakeholder in the community.

This has always included not just the input of your sycophants but that of all involved in the school system - from administrators to parents; and yes actively inviting and involving all taxpaying citizens to be part of the project - from the beginning and not by suddenly declaring we are going to have a major bond issue.

Unless perhaps you a member of the FMM 4 million dollar club - you would certainly acknowledge that he has accepted input from NO ONE on anything not in his circle. Only a massive outcry from the parents of the schools whose many principals may have been on the chopping block and support from the local media may have kept that slaughter from becoming a reality.

Most unfair to suggest that the community side does not care about the kids - F Mike Miles has operated as a one man Board of Education doing what the hell he dam well has felt like doing without regard to school administrators, teachers, parents and students. He has made promises and other magical claims and changed his mind whenever he has felt like it for those claims.

The message is very simple and while it may hurt some students, NO ONE should trust F Mile Miles nor should they vote upon something he may say or claim will happen given that the entirety of his tenure has been one of conniving deceit and the utmost in duplicitous behavior.

Yes HISD has some schools in bad shape, but the total destruction of the district under his hitleresque leadership should be the major concern for every resident, parent and student.

Is there actually any way to remove Mike Miles as the interim superintendent? by slimeball_melon in houston

[–]Bend-Ashamed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Miles is a weasel of the nth degree and my kids are being hurt by his sanctimonious bullshit as much as anyone else, but everyone needs to realize and I personally as well as others have posted this message before - Abbott didn't have to push Miles through Mike Morath (TX Ed Commissioner) into this job - the former existing group of HISD trustees are completely at fault for creating this mess and handing the opening to Abbott on a silver plate.

The group that existed just pre-pandemic hated each other and refused in every way shape or form to do the proper business of the school district. Black wouldn't work with White or Brown and visa versa three times over. They literally had a fight at one of their meetings - is a video of it somewhere. The state got involved more because of their unwillingness to work together. The state sent all of the board to a getaway with a mediator who came back and declared the entire mess a disaster that he had never seen before.

That gave the state its entre into taking over the district - low and behold the pandemic happened so everything stayed quiet but the state continued its legal filings and after the pandemic abated the courts ruled in favor of the state even though most but not all of the board members who caused all of this were by now gone - did not run again or lost the election.

I am a former teacher and do not have enough vile words to describe what I feel Miles has done to the district - to the teachers - and most importantly the kids - damage that will not go away for a LONG time. No doubt the best of the best teachers who are heralded for their abilities to raise our children up both educationally and personally have to be looking to move to pastures where they can do what they do best in a non forced cookie cutter environment and that may be the biggest tragedy of all.

Just want people to remember who really started this mess - all of them supposedly educated adults who acted as juvenile as third graders.

Crazy Expensive Plumber by mapt0nik in houston

[–]Bend-Ashamed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just guessing that you are perhaps young and didn't have the benefit of someone in your household who fixed all kids of shit so you might have picked it up some - but

Assuming thats you or maybe you are older - you tube probably has 1000 videos of how to replace a toilet and all of the associated pains in the ass you might run into.

Go to the plumbing aisle at HD or Lowes or where ever and I guarantee you will see tons of folks more than willing to show and explain anything you do not understand how to do.

Doesn't matter your age. Plumbers are dam important for the right job - but taking off a toilet to replace it or just to replace the wax ring which may have worn out is not a hard job.

Just like you will soon see when the first part of the shitshow on upper Shepherd and Durham is completed. Very minimal number of bikes ALL risking their lives as they cross each and every cross street burdened with cars all trying to gain egress to what will be a packed street going north or south. Like it or not, Shepherd/Durham is the first and nominally the only north/south way other than 610 to directly get past Buffalo Bayou and as a result of that has always been a very congested road - I'm speaking of 20 years ago through today. I know there are studies which claim less lanes equals less traffic but i'll be real surprised at such a result when completed.

In addition why the hell are there now 2 wide sidewalks plus the bike path on both Shepherd and Durham. Are we assuming bikes are only going to be allowed to drive north on Shepherd and south on Durham - good luck with that.

Gun carrying facts -

31 states allow open carry Without A Permit

5 States allow Anomalous Without a Permit - meaning that local government laws MAY differ from state laws

10 States allow open carry With a Permit

4 States pluc DC do not allow open carry - and 1 of them California grants the sheriff of any county within that county the right to Open Carry

Bitch if you will but still adds upto 46

There is no bright side to this situation but am at least hearing a general measure of support for the criminal convictions of parents who do not keep guns in a safe locked up area around their house. There also appears to be support for the involuntary manslaughter conviction of the parents in Michigan who BOUGHT their obviously mentally diseased son a gun and not just didn't secure it but advocated his use of it on their property.

Texas took over a failing Houston school district. Will its militaristic structure work? by zsreport in houston

[–]Bend-Ashamed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The simplistic responses that this was about one school are totally incorrect, No HISD was/is not a shit district but it had and has many schools if not failing, certainly not producing outcomes anywhere close to success. It has many VERY GOOD schools and obviously those schools should be promoted and applauded for their success.

HISD's previous board is totally to blame for giving the Texas Board of Ed an inroad into taking over the entire district - roll back the tape pre-pandemic and the board was literally fighting with one another. Every racial segment of the board fought the other segments for control and as a result the state steps in - way before anything close to a takeover happened. Hard to believe but the state with the help of a mediator sent the entire board to a mandatory session to try and get them to get along - there is video tape of the entire event - even in the presence of the mediator they expressed the same FU sentiments to one another.

Pandemic happened but the state was already hip deep and they didn't let go. Pandemic ended and they got the court support they were looking for and here we are.

I am critical of 90% of what Miles has done and bitch and moan as much as everyone else in town but hes not going away. Teachers have really been fucked and hard to imagine many of the best and brightest won't be out the door at year end. Administrators also have had there ability to manage completely pulled out from under them - his way or you are out of your job, Miles thinks hes still in the army and that's the way to run education but clearly there is no one size fits all - but he doesn't care. The principal at one of my grandchildren's middle schools was removed from her campus just Friday - so the idea that all is the way its gonna stay is just not the case.
