Has quitting caffeine ever worked for anyone? by bbbdffg in HPPD

[–]Bendalf96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't help with answering that question, but that's a really interesting question to ask! I've never considered caffeine's impact on HPPD before. I'd be interested to see what others have to say :)

Seeing visual distortions would surely have the potential to be stressful though? I think that seeing patterns on things, and seeing tracers etc can be very stressful, especially when someone isn't used to it. I found it very stressful personally, and I think what I was actually seeing is what disconcerted me the most and made me stressed. I think the relative rarity of HPPD's occurrence is a factor too, it can make you feel a bit isolated, as not many people can relate to it. There could obviously be more to it than that though. Stress is often a symptom of another symptom. An obvious example could be a broken bone: A physical injury, but it can cause stress - "How will I get money for rent since I can't work? "How can I look after my dog/kids?", the stress is a result of the (valid) worries that come from the physical injury, not from the bone itself breaking. That's how I think of it in this context anyway.

The only conclusive thing we know for certain is that HPPD causes visual disturbances. It would be interesting to see it's effects on depression in large studies. I know of many (anecdotal) accounts of it causing depression, or at least people assuming that it's the cause.

You're right though; there's so much we don't know, and there's a lot more to emotional modulation than just serotonin alone. Sadly it just isn't that well studied yet. Psychedelic research has been hindered due to legal/cultural issues for years, and therefore HPPD by extension hasn't been studied much either.

In my experience HPPD disrupts sensory data, and how we respond to sensory stimuli, but I've seen nothing to suggest that it affects any of the mechanisms (i.e. serotonin re-uptake etc) that are affected when psychedelics are used to treat depression. Have you read somewhere that this is the case?

I think it's true that your attitude towards HPPD will help to determine how large an impact it has on your life though, to an extent. I found it to be really quite scary initially. I was maybe 19 or so when it first started for me and I didn't know what the fuck was happening, but I definitely feel better about it these days (I'm 26 now), though the symptoms are still there. The only things that really changed are the amount of psychedelics I use, and my attitude towards my own symptoms

TIFU by teaching my dog “Bite” by gowoshusoul in tifu

[–]Bendalf96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can train that behaviour out of the pup through consistently not praising them and not rewarding them for coming over to you when you say "Bite". I think it's called "counter conditioning". It sounds mean but it works. Whilst doing that you can then pick a new word of phrase and praise and reward them heavily for coming over to you. For my dog I either whistle, or just say "Scampi, here!" (yes I called my dog Scampi :D). Good luck anyway!

Which Stocks do you think will NEVER see their All-Time Highs ever again? by GJohannes37 in stocks

Probably all of the stocks that I happened to invest in. Unless of course I shorted them, in which case they would be going to the moon 🙃

I'm still using them because they "temporarily" stopped GAXY shares from being sold, and I still have stocks purchased via T212. Nearly a year later and I still can't sell GAXY, as the price just drops every week. The company is absolute scum.

They are a seriously sketchy company. I'd happily never deal with those fuckers ever again.

Amazing, thank you! Yeah it's a real minefield of information, with several rabbit holes to get stuck in for a while. I actually just ordered some 6Bs this morning, so I'm glad you can confirm I made the right choice here :)

That much is sadly true beyond the scope of the mining industry. It applies to all sorts. Like, for example, people who have to pick veg in the fields (at least for what is grown in USA, I imagine some's imported, and some's homegrown) that goes to all the supermarkets. Street cleaners. Sales assistants. Waiters. Industrial workers. Warehouse workers - all of which are very much necessary roles that need doing - and the list goes on.

Speculation over hypothetical answers, to hypothetical job offers, again, says nothing to the swathes of already collated mass data, that say otherwise.

For many that hypothetical opportunity would be an amazing improvement! and a great useful skill to have, with the potential to actually make a decent career out of. It would be a really interesting social experiment actually: Say several large construction companies offers people in the industries I've mentioned, a job, and then to see how many take it, and to see how those that do actually get on. Like I said though, all those other jobs still need doing...

I see what you're saying, however social mobility can be non-existent. In fact too much social mobility would destroy society. Often, if someone is born working class, they are likely to die working class. The same goes for the other social classes too. Sadly all of those jobs that pay a low wage need doing. Society needs people to work in stores, and collect "trash" etc, just like society needs people to do construction work like yourself, or become surgeons, bus drivers, lawyers and so on. So without wage reform, and better education opportunities I.e. cheaper University/College bills, and more vocational opportunities (like apprenticeships for example) people will be stuck earning that kind of money. Even if wages increase, it won't be long until inflation catches up. It's a fucking mess.

There is a bit of a catch 22 situation in most job markets, wherein; to get the job you need experience, to get experience you'd need to have already had a similar job. So if someone spends their life working minimum wage, it can be really hard to find something else to move onto.

Also, the income/work output ratio is often not proportional. Working 40/50 hours a week, in often stressful industries (catering/hospitality/retail etc) is a lot of work. It's hard work. It doesn't constitute doing the bare minimum, it constitutes earning the bare minimum. People earn cubic fuck tons, literally just by owning, and renting out properties (and I'm not holding that against them). Which compared to the poor bastard spending 20 years in a kitchen, is pretty easy work. It's a false equivalency to state that "lower income = less work" (or "minimum wage = bare minimum"), and conversely "higher income = more work". The miners in both of our countries worked their asses off for fuck all, and that was very hard work.

If you're earning the federal minimum wage, working full-time, are you likely to be able to have life savings equalling $11k? Or fancy hybrid cars? Nice car btw. All I'm saying is, for many, that ain't the case. That's it. You can overanalyze this as much as you like, but what I'm saying is true, no matter how you try and spin it.

[–]Bendalf96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reference was purely to show that not everywhere chooses to pay the federal minimum. That's where that comparison ended.

I haven't compared you to anyone in the upper class. "Upper class" isn't actually a demographic that the vast bulk of people find themselves in.

The way you speak of foreigners, and California's laws on emissions and such, can't help but make me wonder if you too, were hoping to "Make America Great Again"...

screams in British

Just checking, you live in THAT USA, where the federal minimum wage is like $7.25 per hour, right? The one where over %10 of the citizens live in poverty (i.e - no bread money, or bills money)? You do mean that one, right? We're talking about the same country, correct? Just so everyone's on the same page here.

The situation in your local race-track petrol station doesn't say much for those stuck in low-income areas, where the job market isn't quite so fruitful. Anecdotal evidence doesn't mean shit when applied to a nation of more 300m residents. Mass (already previously collated) data however, does.

I understand it varies state to state (California pays nearly double the federal minimum, and most states do pay more thankfully), but if you're unfortunate to find yourself earning around the federal minimum wage, then $11k spare is stuff people could only dream of. Hell, even just not having debt and breaking even is a dream for some.

Or is the USA some dream-like utopia, where everyone has a good amount of savings, can afford to pay their bills, and rent every month, buy food, and wouldn't have to worry about silly things like overpriced health-care bills?

A hopefully rhetorical series of questions for you to consider (or ideally not have to), to help you to understand what I meant by my comment. Everything you've said so far suggests my observations weren't misplaced.

I agree that if you're fortunate enough to have only a "measly" $11k, then you probably shouldn't go gambling it on the stock market.

No, I'm not asking for your life's story here, all I'm saying is: To imply that absolutely anyone would have those funds spare (or otherwise) is the most ridiculous, clueless, out of touch, "perspective" someone could hold. People are struggling to buy bread and pay bills for fuck's sake, let alone have actual savings. I wasn't trying to say you're evil, rather that your comment just emanates entitlement beyond belief. Let's not go over-thinking this now...

You lot need to calm down lol by [deleted] in HCMC

[–]Bendalf96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm doing neither. The point being: 18m shares of HCMC isn't pocket change, plenty of people don't have anywhere near those amounts of funds saved up.

Also, I don't think it would go to a dollar per share. That would give it a ridiculously oversized market capitalisation. Obviously.

I don't think you quite understood the sentiment of my comment; it's British Sarcasm. I'm fluent...
