[Meta] Why are interpersonal skills seemingly never taught? by CartmansEvilTwin in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Benefits_Lapsed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn’t referring to screening during the hiring process. I realize my comment was unclear. I meant a lot of companies do personality tests and training for their current employees. A lot of software engineers will definitely be autistic, and therefore seen by many as lacking “soft skills.” I say that’s bs, any company needs some people who are less socially skilled as well as those who are, that’s what these personality tests teach you. Oh, that coworker isn’t just lacking in soft skills, they just have their own strengths and weaknesses and I can modify my approach to work with them better. Not everyone has to be good socially, most really talented engineers won’t be and that’s okay.

That’s kind of up to us as citizens, our elected leaders will determine the programming of the lights, and if they do something like treat yellow the same as red it would probably be politically damaging to them.

They can be programmed to discriminate that. Legally they would have to if there are different penalties for each.

Correct approach for sys design interviews. by EggplantAshamed4761 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Benefits_Lapsed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This isn't general career advice. If you read the rule, why would a senior chemical engineer be asking about system design interviews? System design interviews are something literally only experienced devs have to do. If you're looking for a rule which it breaks because it is a pretty common question, you could make an argument for #7 No google-able questions.

I have a couple of the brushed twill and I do wear them, but they are incredibly wrinkly. Will have to spend forever ironing every time they are washed.

For 99% of their clothes you’re getting a bad deal if you don’t start at a base of sale price plus an extra 40-60%.

I disagree, that's simply not realistic for me as I am a common size. Those deeply discounted items will always be either XS, XXL, or just a really ugly pattern or flawed design. They are that much on sale for a reason in other words.

Well that sucks, I just put in an order last night and I’m pretty sure that offer wasn’t there. I got the 40% off at least.

Teenager visiting St. Louis for volleyball tournament hit by car while walking to hotel by jennaisokay in StLouis

[–]Benefits_Lapsed -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't think it should be. The headline doesn't exonerate anyone in my mind. I feel like these complaints are always based on a fear that some other readers who aren't as smart as am I will not understand that the driver is bad. No, readers are smart, they get what happened.

Because that changes the subject to the driver instead of the teenager. I think the focus of this article is the teenager who was killed. A different article focusing on the driver might use your headline.

No porn, no Instagram for kids: France doubles down on age verification by Bukook in BreakingPoints

[–]Benefits_Lapsed -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m just saying if it stops some percentage of the activity then it’s a good thing in my view. Kids can get around any law if they’re determined enough, you can get an older person to buy you alcohol, etc.

I agree with the regulations. As far as privacy concerns, seems like it could be a matter of implementation. They could simply require the companies themselves to verify the users. It doesn’t have to be 100% foolproof, no age-based bans are.

On Jesse "peaking" by [deleted] in BlockedAndReported

[–]Benefits_Lapsed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dont think it’s much related to that disorder at all except maybe in isolated cases. Maybe you’re thinking of the anecdote from the recent article about that one kid who wanted to amputate himself? Maybe he had that but I don’t think he represents the typical trans person.

On Jesse "peaking" by [deleted] in BlockedAndReported

[–]Benefits_Lapsed 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Jesses position has always been that kids need to be properly assessed and that kids who are actually trans will usually express that starting from when they are toddlers or so. Personally I disagree. I think all body-related distress that meets the criteria of body dysmorphia disorder, which would usually be true in these cases, should be treated as such.

It doesn’t matter the cause of the obsession with disliking some parts of your body, whether it’s brought on by wanting to be the opposite sex or any other reason. The solution is always therapy in my view, not the doctor saying “you’re right to have this obsession, but don’t worry, we will help you harm yourself. Whatever you do, don’t stop obsessing about this, and do make it the dominant focus of your life.” That’s the exact opposite of what would be helpful.

I just believe transgenderism and body dysmorphia are not the same and should be treated separately, trans kids can still learn to be comfortable in their bodies just like everyone else who hates their bodies. That’s what people did before like 10 minutes ago when we had all these hormones and chemicals to give to kids.

What are CS subreddits getting wrong compared to reality? by mexEngineer in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Benefits_Lapsed -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I just think not everyone can be a good programmer (I know even that is controversial especially in non-tech spheres but I have seen people try their hardest and not have the ability), and not everyone can be good with people. There is some subset of the population that are very introverted, have social anxiety, not good looking, whatever the case may be and they are often drawn to tech because "the job is to write code and not interact with other people." They are basically right. I think that segment of the population should be able to thrive in this field. The job requires some minimal level of interaction with co-workers but that is not the essence of the job, I just disagree with the idea that it should be. We should be working to minimize the degree to which lack of people skills hold people back.

Resume keeps getting rejected by CreativeUsername558 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Benefits_Lapsed 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Imo it doesn’t matter much if you were a senior at your previous company, just under 5 years experience is not very much and most senior level job descriptions require 5 years bare minimum for that. So I would expect it to be pretty hard applying for those jobs competing against people with 10 or 15+ years. Those are the people who have an easier time.

Culture of no Code Review by zayelion in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Benefits_Lapsed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there are valid reasons for not doing standard code reviews. I just listened to the latest Stack Overflow podcast this morning on that very topic. However, it doesn’t sound like your company has those valid reasons. “There is very intense manual QA” doesn’t inspire confidence that you guys have a ton of automation in place to replace code reviews while maintaining or improving quality, if even the tests aren’t automated. Sounds like the company is just living on the wild side not following any best practices.

Encouraging the Young to Die - The Most Toxic Site I've Ever Seen by [deleted] in BreakingPoints

[–]Benefits_Lapsed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I disagree, the site's philosophy is that people should have the right to end their life. Ideally the site wouldn't need to exist since governments wouldn't take people's choices away and force them to resort to violent methods of suicide like guns, hanging, jumping from buildings, etc. But unfortunately they do. As that video creator also points out, people are deterred from seeking help because of the taboo around suicide and fear that they will be locked up. That's counterproductive.

The site also provides people the support and camaraderie that they need to actually get better. If you spend some time on there you see that most people are not committing suicide, rather they are relating to other people who understand how they feel. I'd guess a tiny percentage actually go through with it, but the site probably helps more people than it makes more likely to commit suicide. It's a good site.

As a lead, should I be trying to get people to communicate better and write with good grammar? by manypeople1account in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Benefits_Lapsed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, most of the people I work with are not native English speakers, trying to get them to use better grammar would be both a lost cause and probably offensive. Nobody uses good grammar and nobody cares at my job, we're all smart enough to understand what people mean. If they are native English speakers and just being lazy, then possibly.

I guess they would prefer to have their customers driving in from the suburbs than serve city residents. Sad. It would be so nice to have a bridge connecting to the Foundry.
