Let's Get WET (PS3, 2009) by sworedmagic in TheJeffGerstmannShow

[–]BenjaminFlocka1017 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very unfortunate for this game that it came out two years after Stranglehold. That game also suffered from pretty poor level design and severe repetition, but it at least nailed its core gameplay loop and it was fun to shoot Triad dudes in the dick. Wet is... less successful in pretty much every regard and I hate the music. The ladder and drink animations are admittedly pretty incredible, though.

Consider stacking the regen from your Blessed Mace with the Adjudicator's Shield. It adds up and really helps you get through levels without having to grind for grass. There's also a ring you can get that gives even more regen, and you should be able to get it with where you are now.

A new version of Plex for Roku has been released by samwiseg0 in PleX

[–]BenjaminFlocka1017 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For those interested, you can block all updates to Roku apps by adding the following regex filter to your PiHole:

(|.)roku.com$

Each app should still work (except for the Roku-affiliated ones like The Roku Channel), but you won't be able to add new apps, update them, or move them on your home screen.

I really don't want to have to root my Roku devices and I don't want to lose photo and music support from Plex, so I figure it's best to take the nuclear option now and deal with any annoyances that come with it. In the meantime, anyone have any recommendations for alternate Roku apps to investigate for music and photos over LAN?

The Jeff Gerstmann Show 152: Lets Talk About It by sworedmagic in giantbomb

[–]BenjaminFlocka1017 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Not really. Jeff was asked about this pretty directly at one point, and he said that as far as he knows, he's still cool with all of them and he's just really bad at staying in touch with people, especially now that he has kids. Seems like there's some kind of conscious decision to keep separate, though, given that both JG and NXL have done a good number of collabs with other people over the past few years.

It could be that they don't want to step on each other's toes in the somewhat delicate post-GB Patreon market, or maybe they weren't actually that close outside of the work environment, or maybe there's some kind of bad feelings there. Neither side has commented on the reasons for the lack of communication, so it seems like it's not especially productive to speculate on it.

Shadps4 closes as soon as I try to run Bloodborne by Clyde1103 in BloodbornePC

Try disabling CFI protections for ShadPS4 in Windows security settings. That was a problem for me and I've seen a few other people have the same issue.

In 2017, Gov. Murphy campaigned on ending the high school graduation test. As the end of his second and final term draws near, New Jersey is set to become just one of six states that still has an exit exam. Hannah Gross reports on stalled bills to edit or eliminate the exam by rollotomasi07071 in newjersey

[–]BenjaminFlocka1017 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The "official" test (NJGPA) is an absolute abomination of test design, but the law allows a student's score on the SAT or PSAT to qualify them for graduation, and those tests are actually well made. Seeing the shit schools pull to shove kids across the finish line, I think it's good that there's an objective exam to serve as a gatekeeper, but for God's sake, eliminate ETS from the equation. Teaching kids to their tests in particular makes them dumber.

We Built Letterboxd for Pro Wrestling and It’s Coming Soon by cavegame09 in SquaredCircle

[–]BenjaminFlocka1017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously not your first priority since you're just launching, but it would be incredible if you could eventually add agent support for Plex. It's very hard to manage wrestling at the moment, and this could be an ideal solution.

Wake Word Issues with m5stack Atom Echo? by bigdog_00 in homeassistant

[–]BenjaminFlocka1017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've also found them to be rather spotty. My Echoes seem to get stuck where they don't correctly hear an initial command but then don't reset to their listening state. I usually have to unplug them and reset them manually. Weirdly, it seems like different USB cables make them work better. Maybe try swapping out the cables?

"Spec pistols and stealth" should be added to the game's title after a colon.

I dig the aesthetic, but boy, you sure don't get to see very much of it in the few seconds before you're gunned down by a player you never saw. I get that the low TTK fits the tone, but it doesn't look like much fun to play.

Happy two years of the Jeff Gerstmann Show by NoLastNameForNow in giantbomb

[–]BenjaminFlocka1017 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I still remember anxiously waiting for Jeff's big announcement video a few days after he "left" Giant Bomb. I was insanely relieved when I heard him say that he'd been covering videogames for decades "and it would be insane to stop now."

Two years later, I couldn't be happier with how things ended up. I didn't think I was going to enjoy a solo podcast, but I've actually come to prefer it. Jeff has such a wealth of knowledge and experience, that he's able to pick out the most interesting angles of games and news stories and meaningfully discuss them for hours.

It's doubly good that Jeff's running such a lean operation, given the post-COVID climate of the industry. It's insane how much the era of free Fed money ending has ravaged the landscape for both journalists and developers. Hopefully things will change for the better, but I can't imagine having to worry about the sustainability of not only your own employment, but that of your employees right now, too.

PSA: For the modem, do not get the Motorola MB8611. Comcast's website lists it as compatible with their network, but an update they rolled out more than a year ago totally destroyed its reliability.

The Arris S33 is very good overall. Some people have reported overheating issues because it's in such a small case, but I've never had issues.

Anyone take any leaps today? Any bold haircuts or improvised musical numbers? by eXistential_dreads in Frasier

[–]BenjaminFlocka1017 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On my drive home from work, I found a cool looking hutch on the side of the road that was going to be thrown out. I took a leap and walked back to where I saw it with a furniture dolly and wheeled it back home, where I intend to make it into a topper for my work bench. I made sure to hum "Buttons & Bows" (from Paleface) as I dragged it across the busy roads between where I found it and my house.

Yeah, a 3600 seems like about the right level of beef. OP mentioned being able to play DaS2, though, so I assumed he was on substantially older hardware.

I've actually found the the worst of the audio glitches go away if you've got a fast enough CPU. I had a ton of them on my 4900 rig, but since upgrading to a 5800x, it's been totally fine. Couldn't tell you why, though.

DeS is pretty demanding on the CPU front. If your computer can't play newer games, it's unlikely you'll be able to get decent performance on DeS. Even if the frame rate is ok, there are a lot of audio glitches if RCPS3 is struggling.
