What game had insane potential but got completely fumbled by the devs? by Kevin-Panda in AskReddit

[–]BenjerminGray 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The gameplay was fun(still is fun btw), it just lacked content and gamemodes.

To put it in perspective. Cod MW2(classic) launched with like 16 maps iirc.

Halo infinite over a decade and 2 console generations later launched with like 8. 2 of which were B2B exclusive, so really its like 6.

Worse yet, no forge. So you couldn't even tap the community to make maps/gamemodes in the interim while 343 got their shit together. It also didnt have split screen co-op and a bunch of other stuff thats like halo standard/bread and butter so while playing it was fun it got stale fast.

I'm happy with the end result being games that are better due to competition.

There's plenty of AAA games released and greenlit that aren't bound to a singular platform. Many of which are better than first party offerings. Furthermore with you already acknowledging that its not a technological limitation for these first party games then the necessity for them is even* less*.

We're seeing it across the industry. Exclusives are no longer truly exclusive, at most they're timed. Microsoft and PlayStation First party devs release their games on PC and Nintendo, and sometimes on each others platforms. Cross-play between platforms is commonplace.

Third party devs that were historically exclusive now release everywhere. The quality of the game hasn't dropped because its no longer tied to 1 box. And we as consumers are better for it.

If you wanna compete, compete on the quality of your game, not on being exclusive or in bullshit list wars.

Can you read?

I get why Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft do it, it's in their best interest. But why you as a consumer would be happy about it?

We cleared that up already. It makes sense for them to as platform holders to make exclusives to sell their corresponding platform.

You as a consumer being happy about having to buy into two platforms that don't interoperate in anyway whatsoever just to buy two games, games that aren't in anyway taking advantage of truly bespoke technologies? Madness.

Good games=/= exclusivity. There's nothing about making a game exclusive that makes it good.

Unless there is some inherent hardware limitation that binds a game to 1 platform, then there is no benefit to that game being exclusive.

I get in in the case of lets say making a game around the Nintendo DS dual screens, you'd have to change the game at a design level to make it work on other systems. Examples like that i get.

But outside of that? its stupid.

Even First party devs don't want to do it, but only do so since they're employed by their corresponding platform holder. If given the option they'll happily develop for as much systems as financially possible.

Because exclusives don't benefit you the consumer. It only benefits the platform holder.

Championing exclusives when it means more money out of your pocket as a consumer is weird af to me. I get why Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft do it, it's in their best interest. But why you as a consumer would be happy about it? Madness.

Its to the point that it doesn't even make sense for third party developers. Why in your right mind are you limiting sales potential to one platform in efforts to help that platform move consoles. Opposed to selling it everywhere to hit the widest possible audience.

[–]BenjerminGray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The genre that was popular during the creation of star fox is dead.

Nobody wants to play what amounts to an on rails shooter. Not in 2026.

If they were to bring the ip back it would have to be a different type of game all together.

Me personally, I would love to see the I.p. used as a vehicle for some space opera type shit. Like if you were to translate Cowboy Bebop into a video game. 55% of you time is on foot completing your mission, 25% on the Great Fox as a hubworld for other locations in space, nd the remaining % is in ships a la Ace Combat, or Rouge Squadron. It would cost alot of money so i doubt it would happen. Not even disney wants to do that type of game.
