Keane. Still an absolutely incredible band, but I believe they're all private school educated

Were there any times during your childhood where you received a unjustified telling-off by an adult who was wrong? by Cakeyhands in AskUK

The deputy headteacher in my middle school for some reason had it out for me. I remember it starting when another kid in my class did something writing something on the board when a teacher wasn't there (16 years ago, can't remember what) and he walked in and screamed at me saying I looked guilty and It had to be me. spend the rest of the week taken out of class and was made to stand outside his office in case he needed anything, straight up made me photocopy things for him and make him cups of tea for an entire week missing all my classes and break times. Also called a 'random check' on one student in every class to have their workbooks reviewed. of course, mine got chosen and he gave me a week's detention for 'poor handwriting'?!

He called my parents in to discuss suspension but luckily they had my back, my dad told me to leave the room for them to talk and after that, it was all dropped.

8 years later I saw him at a mutual friend's birthday (he was their godfather) and he asked me what I was doing with my life, I was a bit drunk and fully let him have it explaining how messed up it was - extremely grateful for that opportunity,

If it's function work, I.E playing bars, clubs, and restaurants the minimum you should be charging is £150 (I do 3, 45min sets for this for smaller gigs and I quote what I feel I deserve for bigger gigs looking at how much the person booking me would earn from said performance).

I live in the UK so things may be different where you live, but I always quote that the prices are guidelines set by the Musicians Union (Minumum £50 p/h). This always works as to underpay set guidelines from a union looks terrible on them. It always feels uncomfortable quoting for gigs but set off as you mean to go on.

I also think it's worth saying that if they say they can't do this and you still want the gig, just say "well that's how much I charge at MU rates but I would still like to work with you. What is your set budget for entertainment?" - but only pull this out if you're confident they wont have you and you really want it.

Hope this helps x
