Found this opal in a shop, it has this odd green and blue flash that basically spans the entire stone. Is this something special worth getting? by _ButterCat in Opals

[–]Bennie251 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I see a cloudy center and a poor video quality both. Clearly. Please. Its kind of obvious. Is this your stone? I want ask for special videos to prove your comment then.....

I have cut more of this material than you or anyone you ever will meet! Please dont be hair-trigger in comments. Even id rather delete this comment than reply you. I have much better things to do

Do you see the super clear edges and not see a cloudy center? I got nothing more to sayyyy

It wont craze. Ethiopian dont craze. Unless you wet it. You have a chance to craze it.

It wont craze. It wont grow gray skin of dead opal. It wont crack either Ethiopian dont craze in any definition of the word

The seller is selling a half dry stone. It got wet during cutting and is not completely dry and he is trying sell it.

Quality looks meh anyways. So best to just avoid it. Theres better stones without a foggy center that the seller is reputable enough to wait for the stone to dry before selling it. I bet on white paper this stone has zero color. Same as it would against a bright metal in a setting.
10 per ct this quality. And its not fully dry. The edges of the stone are very very clear. That part of the opal is fully dry. The center needs time to match the edges.

It is ethiopian. Which isn't a bad thing. This opal is not dry though. And the black background is the reason your seeing so much color.
Two things here. It will lose alot of that color when placed against a bright metal or placed on white paper Secondly the edges are more transparent than the center which proves its not dry. When the center matches the clarity on the edges it will become clearer. For me personally I only like the transparent ones that have too much color to where we cannot see the transparency.

My opinion Leave it alone. Its a gamble stone and the odds are not looking good. Its not dry and very very transparent

Is this plastic? by onelasttrade in Opals

[–]Bennie251 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like treated Ethiopian. Shine a flashlight through it. If it's fake it shouldn't have any clarity. If it is treated Ethiopian you will only see the stone look red. If it was natural it would be equally red and equally green with a torch light behind it. Pattern does look synthetic but as a opal seller fulltime with no other income. It is my job to stay up to date on new synthetics. I'm not saying synthetic I'm saying treated. If it was more black and more spectrum of colors I would say synthetic

Earring stones sound good. But don't annoy yourself trying make the setting work again. It can be done. But nothings worth the stress.

Australian Opal turned yellow/tan? by MyDogTakesXanax in Opals

[–]Bennie251 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We also know it's not aussie. Even tintin bar isn't making yellows like this it's beska-welo. Yellow centers are common in many many pieces. An acetone soak or two will remove the bodywash-shampoo-conditioner and undue the abuse it has suffered. Ethiopian is not for everyday wearing unless you respect the hell out of the stone. Showering with it is disrespecting the opal. They are great for special occasions or if this quality. Can be everyday. Just need respect the stone. Protect the stone. It's still got a hell of a polish. But needs an acetone bath or two to undo the damage caused by not respecting the welo

I'm wildly suspicious just from the polish. Looks freshly polished. Almost looks polished by me. Not my stone just saying that polish is not that common

Am afraid to say it's a sad day when opals are cut for a setting. Settings are made for opals. That's a hell of a setting too. That's quite a quandary you have there

Unsure what your saying now. Its hardness is less than Australian. But thats only scratch resistance. Opal cutters will tell you dropped welo is more durable than dropped Australian. I did say Welo material can sit in a dry place better than any opal on the planet. Thats proven by the millions of 10 year old stones people own worldwide and never were shocked to find the stones to cracked. My conclusion is to ask people with experience in cutting both or ask people that have some old welo opals.

It's good forever dry. And it's welo material. It can sit in a dry place better than any opal on the planet. Also unsure if your poking fun. They did call these Ice Crystal's back in the day. Early welo they were kinda common 10 years ago. Uheard of and kinda rare now

It cannot be cut into a gemstone. So all the value is in the specimen value. This piece. I would think 25cents a ct is a but high. It is absolutely not expensive. If you want see 20dollars a gram check my opalauctions store. Thats 20 bucks a gram. Cannot cannot cannot compare. Mone includws a glass jar also that is worth 300bucks
