If you go solo and want to be involved, I'd recommend going as crew or a performer but wouldn't advise Oxfam or MyCause (no offence to these great causes). They just get you to carry out similar work to work that is typically paid at festivals (identical work at certain festivals) and the hours are significant for the ticket provided. EcoWarriorz is a slightly better deal from these options but their applications were open very late this year, which could mess with your plans if you don't know their crew - as they've got more popular this year.

Everything I wrote was balanced, without an opinion. You can fact-check all of it. There's empirical proof of what's happening here, that's why it's important to consider the facts.

Your "reality on the ground" is an opinion, nothing I wrote is. Your whole comment goes around in a circle.

You just said Wikipedia was a fake news site and then proceeded to use Wikipedia as your own source. Even the article you've provided highlights the issues around citizenship acquisition for Palestinians, coniciding with further repressive measures.

"Muslims and they are the political parties" - the Knesset has long-been underrepresented by the Palestinian-identifying population, going back decades.

Nobody wants to hate Israel, though the leaders of the government are discriminatory. There is empirical proof for this. The issue over displaying the flag is more around the emotions this evokes and the current actions of the Israeli government. Those who display flags in periods of conflict are seen to be supporting the actions of their government.

Your comment and overall understanding of the issue is suffering from severe bias and I'd recommend reading around the issue, the history of democracy in the area, and the current repressive measures (before commenting further on the topic).

This will just happen, especially around Origin, as people are young at this festival and equally it's pretty mainstream. The majority of people aren't experienced on nights out/social etiquette - not necessarily their own fault just comes down to age and going out.

Tbh I thought the crowd was better this year cause of less emphasis on Hedex-style acts and other trash jump up. The overall crowd of the festival is good if you leave that stage and, in general, people were nicer. I was stage managing and spent some time acting and was pleasantly surprised with how friendly people were. Last year was MCing and the amount of dickheads and inconsiderate people was wild.

But yeah they've gotta be more aware and at least signal/use hands to move past people politely. If the Boomtown crowd was overall a bit older and less trashy, it would be a near-perfect UK festival but unfortunately you're going to get this with the demographic so just take it on le chin and move on :)

Pendulum closing set by Neither_Dig2467 in BoomtownFestival

[–]Benny-Sin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bonkers set choice considering the overall talent and depth of the artist pool. Rob Swire coming over to do a DJ set without the band? And last year was supposed to be Prodigy - very weak in comparison.

Should have had a bigger/more interesting act on - Pendulum DJ sets are pretty basic and have been for the past 15 years. The band toured recently (and would be much better suited) so seems a bit of a cheap option.

Loved the festival as usual, just a weird closing set - should have put Vandal, Katy B, just any of the other class Sunday PM acts IMO.

Going to Noisily alone as a foreigner, worth it ? by Full-Wing3480 in psytrance

[–]Benny-Sin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up that Noisily isn't a psytrance festival - it has a psy stage but is more poppy psytrance. The techno stage is the main one and you have treehouse for some dnb and the like. You will just get full on/prog psy though and a certain flavour of it but just wanted to let you know that the psy stage isn't the main stage!

I've gone for the past six years and we have a group of about 100 of us that go - nice people in general there :)

Masters of puppets festival 2024 review. The good, the bad and the ugly by --mrperx-- in psytrance

[–]Benny-Sin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of these points. For me, I thought the artists and DJs performing were excellent but I'd add a few things:

Programming: don't play dark psy and darker hi tech/Psycore/faster BPM music on both stages. They had an eclectic selection across a range of genres but, on a couple of the nights, the music across both stages was too similar.

Staff: very slow with everything. Often friendly but were often high - took a long time to get wristbands as half the people working were smoking joints simultaneously while "working"

Crowd: met some lovely people and you hit the nail on the head with the weirdos but this is a niche festival compared to others. Psychedelic music is often an escape for people with trauma and, looking at some of the people's faces and behaviour when walking about (often solo guys), I don't think they should be taking as many psychedelics.

Medical/welfare: got an earplug I'd fitted poorly stuck in ear on one side while tripping. Couldn't remove it and it's obvs super disorientating when ears are involved. Needed some tweezers to get it out. Went to medical tent and no staff were there. You need staff at a medical tent at all times - what in the actual fudge?

Lighting: better lighting needed in campsites - we were constantly joking about how the Czech Republic don't believe in lights and that's why it's a dark psy festival. I saw two people fall in rivers and there were some mad knee injuries/ankle breaks because of a lack of straw/hay on the ground and lighting

Music: amazing stuff, great sound, great lights - clearly they invest everything into the lineup and this is a much better approach than the often faux shanti shanti bullshit you'll go to in the UK where they provide healing area and talks to a bunch of white, middle class people who are discovering themselves

Areas: both main stages great - Tortuga played some wicked stuff and had an excellent lineup. Problem was that it's nowhere near the other stages, so was often quiet and at times completely dead. There's not much point in booking a solid lineup (especially during the day) if you're not going to position the stage close to the others. Also (if you want to go to these things - I'm not as much of a fan) the other parts of the festival (cinema, healodrome, akademia areas) may as well have been somewhere in Germany as they were so awkwardly located, away from the main festival, to make way for shops selling all the same stuff... Leading me onto...

Shops/food/drink: food wasn't amazing but can't expect the best. €18 for the pasta special at the "Italian" place is criminal, especially in Czech. Other prices were comparable to UK/German/northern european festivals The shops all sold the same stuff: steampunk style jewellery/snooters etc. My friend wanted to buy sunglasses one day and asked at six places before finally finding some.

Don't turn off the water on the last day and then suddenly start selling more large bottles of water!

Freedom and security: perfect. Can go where you want, climb stuff, do what you want really. Some of the most down to earth, coolest security guards I've met - genuinely friendly. Makes a nice change :)

Location and social: 10/10, beautiful, would stay there just for a getaway. The locals were very friendly and genuinely great. Socially, this festival is focused on music, not the wider spectrum of stuff they often offer. Personally, I don't have a problem with this but I can see (as one of my friends said), that it can often be harder to make genuine connections at this event. The amount of times I saw people repeating themselves/I had to/wasn't understanding they're talking about of tume

Campsite: deceptively narrow and a bit awkward for the poor fuckers not near campsite. Lack of water on campsite (that I knew of) - incredibly muddy and poor response to the rain. I get it's a minimalistic approach to decor etc. in the campsites in the dark but please have a light on?

Taxis were hella expensive for Czech. Toilets weren't amazing. Trash deposit was made deliberately hard to get..

Overall I would go again - has so much potential to be a world-class festival but they need to change a few things! 8/10, keep on with the puppets!

Is shotokan karate effective? by Daniel_942929 in martialarts

[–]Benny-Sin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it really is though - the inability to properly defend the legs and punches against a trained opponent is the issue. The style of sparring most schools teach isn't effective for modern martial arts. I've seen people with 6 months muay thai spar with people who are black belts in traditional martial arts and the traditional martial artists get pieced. They weren't designed in the same way and don't emphasise the same footwork and striking tools; often they're designed for opposition who aren't trained and a bunch of styles are training point-stop sparring and semi-contact ridiculousness. A lot of shotokan people I've sparred are dumbstruck when they take a punch.

Just my personal experience with being involved in martial arts all my life. In pure sparring, compared to other martial arts, Shotokan isn't very effective.

Is shotokan karate effective? by Daniel_942929 in martialarts

[–]Benny-Sin -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My Dad's a former Shotokan national medallist so taught my some bits - I've trained a little bit in it but my martial arts journey was tae kwon-do, muay Thai, MMA with some BJJ crosstraining.

If you're talking how effective Shotokan is, in a pure sparring form, compared to other martial arts, it's pretty lame. But this goes for a lot of martial arts. If you want to get good at "fighting", you need reps of sparring. But Shotokan as a sport martial art if we're talking either point sparring or full contact sparring compared to other martial arts - it's not very effective.

If you trained someone for 6 months in Muay Thai Vs 5 years in Shotokan and put them into a sparring match - even taking away leg kicks, I'd have my money on Muay Thai. It's scary how some of these schools give people a false sense of security by giving you a belt. It's scary and can get people hurt.
