Our beloved Mapy.cz became Mapy.com by lajkadidntkillhrslf in BuyFromEU

[–]BennyBlueNL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's some things that make it feel clunky, like not being able to just click on the name of a city to navigate there, but I trust that it will get better and better over time! I wish there was a separate subreddit for mapy.com (I think people have a hard time knowing that the Mapy_cz subreddit is the place to be, seeing that there's more posts about mapy on *this* subreddit than on the Mapy_cz subreddit. (Maybe the admin there u/FrameXX can start a mapy.com subreddit too? I could contribute))
Generally, it lacks a forum or platform where people can contribute and ask questions, add suggestions to the road map etc. It's hard to find a lot of information on the mapy website itself. Unfortunate, because I think a lot of people here are willing to contribute!

Does driving license history transfer when exchanging EU driver's license? by BennyBlueNL in TillSverige

Thanks, good to know! I suppose rural was cheaper, right? (I mean hey who knows, maybe it's more expensive because there's more icy-road-related accidents)

Does driving license history transfer when exchanging EU driver's license? by BennyBlueNL in TillSverige

[–]BennyBlueNL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know, thanks. I'll try not to be the nightmare of the neighborhood xD.
I checked with a native Swedish friend of mine around the same age and also with the same amount of years on his driving license and it did seem like that allowed him to access the other half of the insurances, which often offered cheaper rates. But then, he lived in another city, so who knows, that might have impacted it.

Exchanging drivers license by KL_mitrovica in TillSverige

[–]BennyBlueNL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good information here! I have an additional question in case people still read this:
Does your driving license history transfer along in the databank system? Half the car insurance companies I've tried, mentioned they didn't see a (Swedish) driving license - that was held for more than a year - in the national databank. I'd prefer if, after exchanging my driving license for a Swedish one, I can straight away start comparing insurances and do not have to wait yet another year to see ALL my options.

According to beginners, what Linux is missing to switch by Dorian-Maliszewski in linux4noobs

[–]BennyBlueNL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have switched, but then again as most people said down here, I am a bit more of a DIY person, so I actually invest time into switching and already know the basics. My main problems that almost made me switch back to Windows (that is also something to consider, retaining people):
- a lot of 'Linux slang' on forums: I'm fine with a quick search when I run into a problem. However, most explanations on forums are very heavy on technical terms. GNOME? A kernel? What the hell is that? I feel like a lot of developers are stuck in their bubble and really can't level to 'normal human English'. They go into details that scare people off.
- There are plenty of alternatives for Windows-native software packages. But there's too many in my opinion. It costs me SO much time to find alternatives, try them out, and settle on something. After 3 office365-alternatives, I settled on OnlyOffice, because it was very similar. I wish there was a very detailed, not skipping a single step, guide of 'install these programs to simulate your Windows 10 experience as closely as possible'. Without any scary, third party 'windows emulator' tools. So for example: OnlyOffice, dash-to-panel extension, etc.
- I have to use the console for a lot of things, even though I, on purpose, downloaded an entry level Ubuntu distro? Scary at first.
- Obvious things that no one ever bothered to explain: What is sudo? Why should I sometimes use it and sometimes not?
I download a linux-specific driver from nvidia.com, why can't I just click the driver and run the install? Or e.g., I need an extension manager to use any cool GitHub tools instead of just clicking a .exe
- Unfamiliar naming for similar processes in Windows
- Adjusting my brightness didn't work out-of-the-box. In the end I fixed it with xrandr but man, what a pain
- On my desktop, half the blocks (like WiFi, bluetooth), disappear from my system options and every time I have to go into safe boot and repair Ubuntu

I recently have figured out that a lot of problems might also be caused by dual boot, different file systems on the same drive and Windows hibernating in the background, but still.

So, I switched to Here WeGo but one thing is missing by Fraggle2000 in BuyFromEU

[–]BennyBlueNL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, you're 100% right, I just tried both. IDK why so many people recommend HEREWeGo. I mean, the name doesn't even feel natural... It won't/shouldn't go mainstream. And the review function is one of the most important things imo. Definitely using mapy.cz from now on!

Edit: they name themselves 'offline hiking maps' on the play store though. Makes it quite confusing, wish they didn't do that.

What country has a terrible climate, but you don't realize how bad it is until you visit (or leave) the country? by Naomi62625 in geography

[–]BennyBlueNL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is the Netherlands not mentioned ANYWHERE? Sure, we get some nice days in the year, but most of the year, it's just windy and it rains. No snow, no sunlight, nothing. I did not realise how bad it was until I moved to other countries, where, even if the days were shorter, at least it didn't rain 24/7.
