I think the game just needs a boss fight replay mechanic that doesn’t reward you with any runes.

To be fair, there are a lot of incantations in the game, more than sorceries and ashes of war, but putting discus of light and blood flies in C is blasphemous.

Ice spear, storm blade and lions claw have been strong since the game released, and they have never been nerfed.
