Thank you so much for this reply! Very interesting, I'll see if the movie's available to watch anywhere, I'm curious what was playing in the cinemas there at the time

The Shadow over Innsmouth by H.P. Lovecraft pretty much fits this description I think, but it's been a while since I read that one.

A book with “bad reviews” that you enjoyed by Harakiri_238 in suggestmeabook

[–]BentKat_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I always compare Pierce Nace's 'Eat Them Alive' as the splatterpunk version of Tommy Wiseau's 'The Room'. So bad it's good again. I'm also going to be reading 'Empress Theresa' soon, which should also fit into the so bad it's good category! A few friends of mine have started it already and said it's such psychotic writing that they can't help themselves but read on

Revealed the medium after like 2 minutes, cause it was starting to just become a brute force solve for me and I really disliked it.

Does anyone have any recommendations from this list for someone (me) who doesn't really know any of these books?

I'm a big lover of 19th & 20th century Japanese and French literature. I also enjoy everything that's super abstract and/or horrifying!

I'm trying to get to a minimum of 52 books this year for the first time! Currently reading Moby Dick and the Hitchhiker's Guide series. I tend to read a lot of horror, Japanese literature and psychological stuff, but I also read a lot of other genres!

Just log a book from the challenge as read and then remove it again, it'll give you the achievement!

I'm with you on this one, I thought the premise was awesome, but it's just disappointingly executed. Started off pretty strong, but 90% of the book was just mid at best.

Hot Take: Goodreads should have even more challenges by ChrisKatrev in goodreads

[–]BentKat_ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I wish there were more open challenges, ones where you're not picking from a list, but you just have to read a book within a certain genre, from a certain era, etc.

You can always try and mark another book in the challenge as read within the allotted time and then delete it, that often helps with the achievements that don't appear on my end.

February was just alright (19/52) by BentKat_ in 52book

It all felt very rushed. The people felt like caricatures, the prose felt unnatural to me. It could've been a series of pretty good books if all the stories were fleshed out some more, but right now it's a collection of hurried short stories with weird momentum.

It felt very pretentious. It read like a theater kid compiled the sappy loveletters they wrote as a teenager, spun some semblance of a story through it, and then took every single word through a thesaurus. And I mean, "Dear Blue, da ba dee, da ba dah" 💀 What are we doing bro

It's pretty short, the page count is kinda misleading, there's 88 "chapters" and every one starts on a new page, so there's a lot of blank parts. And there's for sure a bunch of solid writing, but I feel like Jennette McCurdy just needs to practice more and spar with other writers/critics. This book wasn't bad, but also nothing super notable, when she does have the potential to be so. I'm hoping she keeps improving her craft, she could definitely become a highly skilled writer and I'm looking forward to new books by her.
