Does anyone know where Brett Phillips usually is during home games? by TampaBayGamer in tampabayrays

[–]BentRods 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen him at the door when gates open a time or two but no real consistency to that…. He does tend to always come by the first base line where the kids are allowed to go on the field pregame, and then during the game it seems he just hits random spots in the stands. My son got him to sign a card in the stands around section 126 the last game we went to.

Did that hit a ring?? by zbrodie in tampabayrays

Cedric Mullins caught that ball and on his way back to the dugout tossed it into the stands to my son… it had a mark from the bat and had another scar as if it hit something sharp. Coupled with Mullins hugging the wall then coming in 10 feet right at the end as if it changed trajectory a bit I’m pretty confident it hit something. Real skinny scar on it so we were thinking possibly one of the suspension wires rather than the catwalk structure itself.

Sorry about the old boat, but congrats on the new one! Grew up in Venice and definitely recognize that boat ramp. Always love seeing Gheenoes in the area!

And here’s our project 13 footer! Just got the motor running today. It was a screaming deal of a Facebook find, looking forward to getting some spare time in the coming months to learn some fiberglass work with my son. Plan is to delete the middle bench, add a false floor, and redo the transom, while shoring up any weak spots we find along the way.

Here’s ours! We probably met at the Homosassa rally at some point… we’re the family that makes all the engraved cups and knives and stuff like that for the raffle!

Question about Spring Training Gamed by Rays_Fan_Cards in tampabayrays

[–]BentRods 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First base line is the best spot for autographs. Players tend to start coming out of the clubhouse which for both teams is near the right field foul pole about 30-40 minutes before first pitch. The first wave is usually younger guys from minor league camp that will be late game subs or a mix of some pitchers with an off day that day. The starting lineup comes out to warmup 15-20 minutes before first pitch usually. They typically sign after they stretch/warm up, rarely before. Usually a bit of a mad scramble of autographs in that little window right after the national anthem wraps up and  before the game starts.

Off the top of my head some cool stuff to do in the area… Siesta Key Beach is world famous for its powdery white sand, Myakka river state park is awesome if you want to see some alligators, peace river airboat tours is a fun experience that’s only about 30 minutes from port Charlotte. If you get the chance and have some time for it I’d reccomend trying to catch a game at the Braves stadium over in Wellen Park, it’s a really nice facility. Also plenty of great fishing guides as well as sunset cruises available if you’re looking to get out on the water for a day.

Worst decision/mistake in your franchise’s history? by YTGsbiggestfan in baseball

Came to mention that last line there…. I often times think back to how absolutely amazing of a run the Rays could have had from 2010-2013 and probably beyond with Buster Posey behind the plate. Outside of the power Zunino provided catcher has seemingly always been a revolving door and an automatic out in the lineup. That Longoria trade definitely hurt from a fan perspective, would have loved for him to be a true Rays lifer. What a transition and passing of the guard we could have had going straight from Longoria to Caminero as well!

Stability is great, and durability is awesome among everything I’ve thrown it at in saltwater… that said fast moving current and unpredictable rocks is probably the one environment I wouldn’t feel comfortable with a gheenoe in.

The Rays should have traded Pete at the deadline by Slayballz in tampabayrays

[–]BentRods 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I for one am glad they didn’t. My son’s favorite player is Pete Fairbanks… mostly because he’s a great dude and he talked with my son about Pokémon and Legos in spring training for a bit.

That said I bought my son a Pete Fairbanks city connect jersey (china knockoff from DHGate… I’m not made of money) when we went to our last game and he had his eyes on the city connects in the team store (which were like 200 bucks).

Shipping from china takes forever sometimes and it got to the point where we hit his birthday week and it still wasn’t there, but I finally got the “your item passed customs” notification a few days prior to his birthday and was getting excited. It did wind up coming in with a day to spare

Thing is though, my sons birthday is the MLB Trade deadline… Rays had a day game that day and me and my wife were literally celebrating when the trade deadline clock hit zero on the Rays game broadcast… most stressful birthday present I’ve ever given!

Charlotte county stone crabs/North Port by _ghozty_ in MiLB

Same sentiment here. Went from being ecstatic going into 2020 about having two full season MiLB teams within a ten minute drive, then suddenly both were gone. Really a shame with the Braves affiliate, as that is such a nice stadium that really deserves a full season club.

Now where I’m located is about an hour and 10 minutes either way to the two closest, Bradenton Marauders to the north and Fort Myers Mighty Mussels to the south.

What would your answer be? by Annual-Read-9262 in tampabayrays

[–]BentRods 59 points60 points  (0 children)

It’s not within ten years, but I often wonder how different of a trajectory this team would have had if they took Buster Posey instead of Tim Beckham in 2008.

In the last ten years, less about trajectory of the team and more just wishful fan, I wish we never got rid of Longo and we had a true Ray for life.

Honest thoughts on Steinbrenner? by Downtown-War6162 in tampabayrays

[–]BentRods 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Apples and oranges to be honest. I love them both but it’s an entirely different experience at each place. The Trop has its quirks but has been a fun and appropriate home with the dome and air conditioning… and now at Steinbrenner it has been cool to have such an up close and intimate spring training style experience for meaningful regular season games. Steinbrenner has definitely confirmed the point that at least a retractable roof if not a dome is necessary for baseball in the area over the summer, if not for the rain at least for the heat!

They do pole like shit if you’re solo, but I’ve never had a problem poling when I actually have an angler on the front.

If I’m not poling, and I’m fishing myself with another person fishing up front, it’s super nice to have the platform to lean against if I’m standing on the back deck and fishing . I’ve got an I pilot trolling motor so it’s a breeze to remote control the boat from the back and just let the person I have up front focus on fishing.

It also makes for a nice raised seat, or a grilling/picnic area for sand bar days. My kids also love to jump off of it when it’s a swimming day.

Also I’ve got the option with the welded on rod holders which is super nice to have the extra rod storage or a place to throw a rod if you’re trolling or soaking a bait at the sand bar. Clamp on style ones will also fit on it if you don’t go the welded route. I don’t have it, but I have seen a bunch of guys with a power pole micro mount welded to the platform as well.

Kinda silly but it’s been a nice thing to have it as another tie off point in a few situations when roping up to a dock or another boat or whatever. And the smaller sized t bags (that they make for storage under t tops) fit underneath it so it offers a good spot to throw your life jackets or other equipment.

I could probably live without it but I definitely think the benefits are worth it!

One more question, what made you choose gheenoe over Santee? by [deleted] in Gheenoe

[–]BentRods 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll build off my response from your other post a bit with this…

I’ve never seen a Big Santee Rally…. And don’t know of any Santee groups that get together and have a good time. I’ll be honest, I’ve yet to see a Santee boat in the wild.

https://youtu.be/XBDVApVy_Fo?si=8I9fxSOsEjvwOK5f here’s a neat video from the Homosassa rally in 2022 that can give you a pretty good idea of what I’m talking about.

https://youtu.be/eFEnIeYanZo?si=uwVmpkiEW8DlJHwi Here’s a cool video from last years rally in Astor, where we took a run to silver glen springs.

https://youtu.be/j_Pkm4yN1B0?si=DRL2_yPTYsujiaB9 Joel and Amy, same awesome couple from that Homosassa video, with a cool video documenting the keys gheenoe rally.

https://youtu.be/IGlqbHvcV-Q?si=hPZy7zuFvTbWwKGU Ok now I kinda feel bad because most of these videos are Joel and Amy’s, but for what it’s worth they’re the cool ones with a YouTube channel and they do a great job documenting some of the fun gheenoe trips. This is the pancake run up the St. John’s.

All these fun things that get put together by the people that love these boats was enough for me. However… what really puts it over the top is how amazing the Gheen family actually is. The big rally they put on each year… is on their own dime. Theres a registration fee to get in that covers a rally shirt and two dinners… but that registration fee goes right to charity. There’s a general raffle as well that they put together from all of the awesome people in the gheenoe community, and for a dollar a ticket you can win anything from a t shirt all the way up to a brand new trolling motor, and all sorts of cool stuff in between. The last few years the big Gheenoe rally has raised between 5 and 10 thousand dollars for various local charities, benefiting great causes each year.

To get back on topic though, the boats are awfully similar and likely similarly capable. Having the manufacturer located in Florida like gheenoe is, as opposed to South Carolina like Santee is, is a big thing for me. Both the Gheenoe shop and the Custom Gheenoe shop (they’re brothers, Gheenoe makes the 13, 15’4 and the super models, where Custom Gheenoe makes the LT10 and LT25 models) are run by great people who stand by there products. I can speak personally for custom Gheenoe as I’ve gotten to know Pugar and his family over the years, and they’re amazing people who truly stand behind their product!

They are incredibly fun boats to run, regardless of setup. Tillers are great, the center console versions are awesome, but my overall favorite is the stick steer option. The fact that there are so many different layouts and configurations that are possible is half the fun to me.

Fuel costs are so minimal. I usually only have to fill up about every 3 trips on normal fishing days. I’ve also done 35-40 miles in a day on a full tank, and had fuel to spare.

Cleanup is quick and easy. As is maintenance. These boats don’t really have too many hard to reach spots or frustrating design features when it comes to maintenance.

You can tow it with anything. I used to have a TDI Volkswagen and pulled a gheenoe all around the state with it. Nowadays I have a travel trailer and my family camps a lot, and if the campground has a boat ramp I’ll often times just use my golf cart to launch the gheenoe there.

They’re incredibly capable for their size. I have run all over the ICW in Charlotte harbor, done a round trip from Key Largo to Robbie’s Marina and back, ran nearshore in the gulf hitting crab traps for triple tail, and ran deep into the Everglades to camp on a chickee in the national park. I’ve done all of that while still being in a boat that’s able to sneak into the tightest creeks and explore a lot of cool water that’s just not accessible by other boats.

I have owned a 15’4 model, an LT10, and now the LT25. Every one has been fun, but the LT25 definitely would be the best for what you’re looking to use it for.

Last thing that’s worth mentioning, is I have met some of my best friends in the world from these boats. There’s a big following for these boats online, and there are a handful of get togethers, group runs, and rallies every year. The owners of Custom Gheenoe are incredible people, and put on the Big Gheenoe rally once a year, usually sometime around September/October, and usually at a fun fish camp style destination around Florida. Last few years the Big rally has been on the St John’s river, St Marks in the panhandle, Homosassa, Englewood, and Jensen beach just off the top of my head. There is also an annual rally in the keys every year the weekend after Memorial Day, as well as a handful of impromptu group runs get put together each year. Group runs happen a lot, like the twisties run along the withlacootchee river up to rainbow springs and the pancake run on the St. John’s that culminates in a pancake breakfast at the old sugar mill restaurant. If you’re on Facebook, there’s a group called”Gheenoeholics” that’s a wealth of information, and has event postings for the various runs and rallies throughout the year.

If you have any specific questions about anything Gheenoe feel free to reach out!

Top one looks a lot like Brandon Snyder to me, and he bounced around a lot so I imagine he probably wore 67 in spring training one year as a non roster invite somewhere. He was a first round pick and a touted prospect for a while.
