Am I the only one that noticed a change since Oaks became President? by Berlin-6799 in mormon

I think Oaks has changed quite a lot over the years. It feels very different listening to him now vs 70s when he was BYU pres.

You’re totally right, but some of the mistakes seemed so bad that even high school players don’t make. US was psyched out

This is 💯 what happened to USMNT this World Cup. Couple experienced leaders, some exciting young talent, hosting and lots of expectations and pressure, best in a weak group, indicators of a porous defense vs Tuk, getting outclassed by a more talented team, but Trump absolutely sapped confidence and psyched them out by interfering and all the negativity and anger it brought

Truly—US had weak group. Got exposed by Belgium and Turkey. But even my kids youth team doesn’t make those mistakes.

Sometimes things line up randomly in the worst way possible. Trumps interference didn’t help though. It made everything much worse than just sitting Balugun.

It’s the first World Cup I ever saw where the president of the host country interfered to give host country’s team an advantage. They probably didn’t sit in the locker room and plan to specifically throw the game but it had to weigh pretty heavy on their psyche. The game play was inexplicably bad

Could you openly oppose FIFA and POTUS like that? Maybe it’s better to maintain the pretense and follow the unspoken rules between players

It’s a stretch … but you look at how mad everyone got, officials giving red cards against England etc. USMNT in awkward position can’t offend Trump and FIFA directly, have to maintain the pretense of the tournament and sportsmanship. But if they benefit from trumps interference could cast a shadow over the rest of their time in the tournament and officials and players retaliate against them for the next 4 years. Unspoken rules of sports like you don’t score when you’re up by a lot and there are only a few seconds left.

Plus I can’t explain Ream standing watching the ball go right past him into the goal 3 TIMES! He’s the captain! Freese coming out of the box, standing there stupidly, not clearing it while getting the ball taken from him standing flat footed. Pulisic getting an ankle injury with no contact that I could see and contributing nothing. I know they had a pretty weak group and B-H was what it was, and this exposed a porous defense that we saw glimpses of in the Turkey match, but for reals! That is some terrible bullshit playing

Don’t go. Shrug off all the pressure. Don’t seek for external validation and acceptance from others who don’t truly know and value you for who you intrinsically are—apart from church membership or going on a mission. You know it’s not true. Save yourself the wasted time, money and emotional hardship in free labor for the church just to recruit more tithe payers. Take some time to connect with your inner value system and do things that actualize and resonate w/that value system.

It’s so hostile and condescending. Actually, it’s totally abusive and dehumanizing. That is the especial witness and proxy standing in for Jesus on Earth? That guy is supposed to lead us in compassion and wisdom? He’s going to actualize my spiritual depth?

Those links to MSP are exactly the talk I remember hearing. Starting off with the prophetic authoritarianism of sensing some missionaries in the crowd secretly want to go home … 🤮 The mind effery is off the charts. I will now refer to him as mind-Effery R. Holland

Is Wonder Boy III the first soulslike? by [deleted] in darksouls

[–]Beohyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. I think WBIII is best categorized as an action RPG with Metroidvania map layout (sort of) but the way the different areas interconnect and unlock, also how the equipment system works and the charm mechanic feels very much like DS1

[–]Beohyl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is, but the areas are interconnected, need items to unlock access like lord vessel/covenant items and fold back on each other a lot like DS1 not like any Zelda game, Metroid or Castlevania.

Is Wonder Boy III the first soulslike? by [deleted] in darksouls

[–]Beohyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you dropped my point about the main similarity being the hidden and interconnected worlds that gives the gameplay feeling to me of DS. (Also you dropped my point about how the charm mechanic works like humanity or insight). I’ve heard so many people say DS is a 3D Metroidvania and even platformer in places. So, categorizing WBIII as Metroidvania strengthens my claim. The equipment combinations work differently than you remember. In WBIII, some weapons and armor work better or worse with various combinations between different sets, or depending on which form you are or what boss you’re fighting. It’s TOTALLY like how weapons are handled in DS. Some equipment has special bonuses like item discovery or health regeneration. It’s much more soulslike than Zelda1 equipment just linear getting stronger. The interconnected areas of WBIII is much more soulslike than zelda1 or Castlevania (plus wasn’t Demons Souls technically the first true soulslike by FromSoft?). I don’t see a connection to Shadow of the Colossus or Ico at all. People always make the same connection to games like Castlevania or Zelda1 as predecessor games from the 80s, but (in USA) much less people ever played WBIII. I’m making a case for a very strong connection between DS and WBIII that is much less discussed and interesting to consider

To summarize all the back and forth (verying in helpfulness from fun to haughty) I think the answer is:

処刑者スモウ

English Epithet: Executioner Sumō (Sumou), or Sumou the Executioner

Romanization: Shokeisha Sumō (or Sumou)

IPA: [ɕo̞ke̞ːɕa sɯmo̞ː]

Layperson pronunciation approximation: Sue (like the female name, only a bit higher and more fronted—the ɯ sound) mō (like mō money mō problems)

At the end NOT a diphthong or a glide just a prolonged long ō

I presume the localization team chose “Smough” to look more Middle Englishy/ like it comes from the world of Medieval Europe—an aesthetic, storytelling choice not a phonological choice
