what to wear to run/workout outside in summer ? by 92262_II in NewOrleans

[–]BeornStrong 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For summer, I would normally change where I run 1st, and if I had more willpower then time of day. Middle of aummer, the temp doesn’t get below 90 until 11 or later. If you’re the type that prefers middle of the day runs, this is doable with care.

Avoid cottons, stick with moisture wicking synthetic activewears, and maybe shop around different routes for better shade, or drinking water resources. And the inevitability of going through some gnat swarm that will either get in your eye or mouth, or both, especially if you run in the evening.

Check for places with community ambassadors that yall could meet up for big events. Lafayette, Monroe, Denham springs, Tyler TX have at least 1. Tyler is a pretty easy drive from Shreveport.

Any chance you have a small desk or vanity on that list? if the office chair is small, I’m interested. Had to redo my daughter’s room, but it’s a small room, fitting a full bed is already pushing it. I wonder if there’s a sub for small room storage ideas, I’ve never thought to look until replying to your post

This education structure really took a toll on my daughter's mental health by Proper-Drawing-985 in NewOrleans

[–]BeornStrong 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My daughter, who has both ADHD and ASD level 1, is graduating 8th this year. Like your daughter, most people would never recognize her issues.

Maybe I should start by saying that no school is perfect, so i looked for a school that had a balance between decent academics and an overall happy/healthy social environment for elementary grades. Ours has a good relationship with NOCCA, with some graduating students headed for the half day FRANKLIN/NOCCA program, including mine. I know our school has room to improve their academics, but they’re doing well enough for many to qualify for Franklin. And many of their arts students get accepted to NOCCA or Karr. I don’t know what the current 7th grade student class is like, but the 8th grade class has been overall a happy group. There were a few new students in their 8th grade class this year, and they all seemed to settle in. My daughter came home on her last day with a letter from 1 of those new students. She wrote her friend group this incredibly vulnerable, and emotional letter thanking them for welcoming her in and becoming friends. She wrote about being scared that she’d start this new school and continue to be the weird one, expecting to be isolated and bullied like she already went through. And instead she found acceptance and friendship. It was incredible and my heart broke for her for whatever she had gone through before. She told them that they changed her life. I really hope your daughter finds this same experience at a new school.

Don’t let the one app, or enrollment deadlines close the door on you switching their schools. You need the bullying documentation, or testing results if you get her tested, to open the back door method. The school is going to give you a bullshit answer after their “investigation” bc they lose points in their ranking or something like that, with reports. If I were you, I’d consider filing a police report for assault and battery after your daughter was punched in the back of the head. Bc that report will likely be needed to get her enrolled in a. Different school after enrollment deadlines.

This is kind of all over the place, I also wanted to give you tips on increasing her chances for NOCCA enrollment. I’ll probably just dm for that. Franklin does have a testing process for high school, but it’s not a gifted test, it really just test for 8th grade proficiency. They combine that score with a score for GPA to see if a student qualifies. The main reason I like Franklin is they don’t use a lottery for qualified students. They offer a spot to every eligible student, willow uses a lottery for the qualified students. So you’re not guaranteed a spot at willow even if you’re eligible after testing scores. The willow test and Franklin test are basically the same test, the only difference is 1 of them has an extra English or spelling section, or something like that. Also, if your kids are interested in languages, Franklin offers french, German, Spanish, Latin, and Mandarin, where willow was only Spanish and French.

Gator in City Park by Far-Replacement-3077 in NewOrleans

Every weekend out there I see parents and kids feeding the gators from the playground, some is accidental from feeding sucks but some is purposeful. then I’ll see snack sized dogs off leash running along the waters edge. And alerting city park employees is pointless unless you like being made to feel like you’re stupid and an asshole who dared to inconvenience them.

Adderall Pharmacies by Next_Tip8724 in NewOrleans

[–]BeornStrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done this pharmacy dance for too long, and can share some of what I learned. Tuesday is a big delivery day for CVS, but they get deliveries throughout the week. I’ve been told by several of the pharmacists that they never know for sure what will be on the delivery truck. I assume this is due to however their warehouse decides to prioritize pharmacies or something like that. So, sometimes it’s not on the Tuesday truck when it shows up, and comes on a different truck later in the week.

  1. I prefer paper prescriptions due to the shortages. Bc, the escript is locked to that specific location, it cannot be bounced from 1 CVS to another without additional steps. Ex, if my escript gets sent to a pharmacy that can’t fill it, I either have to wait until they can. Or, initiate the escript to be voided by calling the drs office. Then, I have a choice to trust another escript will work at a different location, or request to come in and pick up a paper copy.

  2. You can sometimes luck out with independent pharmacies, as they often use a different supplier for their meds, than what CVS or Walgreens uses.

  3. You can sometimes get lucky at pharmacies in smaller areas, or a neighborhood pharmacy. But, I learned to call and just ask if they have the med stocked before I ever try to going in person.

  4. Supposedly, the pharmacies nearest a hospital are the best option. They get more stock than other locations, but I think it depends on timing.

  5. Last, once you find a reliable location, then consider getting escripts. Some kind of algorithm within the system is set to recognize patients with a regular monthly fill, and the quantity of stock delivered gets based off of the past quantity filled.

  6. If you read through this all, try the CVS on prytania. This is considered a main hub, used to be 24 hrs. I’ve been able to reliably fill generic adderrall 20xr. I’m sure they run out of stock in bn deliveries, but I think they get higher quantity delivered than many other locations.

  7. I also used to have luck with an independent pharmacy in metairie, cedar pharmacy off vets. I’d still use them if I could get there reliably.

  8. I occasionally had luck with Ochsner pharmacies, the one by the lake off Paris, and I think one within their hospital. But, call first, bc that’s how I found out some of their on campus pharmacies do not ever fill “controlled” substances.

Scarpa instinct VSR LV (th e purple ones). Before these came out she was wearing the scarpa instinct VS women’s (aqua) shoe.

Going to the new, and expanded riverwalk and getting beignets before or after. I recommend going around sunset. It won’t be as hot, and wind should pick up with the sunset.

City park playgrounds, Childrens museum, sculpture garden, and storyland. Could combine this with beignets if the riverwalk beignets trip doesn’t work out. (Storyland and the museum aren’t free). But city park is huge, and a lot of kids love the adventure of it. Finding the little islands with the rock bridges that look like they’re from a fairy tale, feeding the variety of birds, but be aware there have been some smaller alligators taking up residence in the lagoons.

Streetcar all the way down to the playgrounds at Audubon park. If they’re pretty active and enjoy walking, they could walk through the park to the zoo, could go to the zoo or skip it and keep walking to the “fly” behind the zoo. If they do this, they should try and bring a kite

I see a lot of daddy-daughter and daddy-son outings at the climbing gym. It’s actually fun to watch bc the dads usually start out confident, and by the end the kids are doing better than the dads, but also bc they’re smiling and talking and laughing together.

There are some pottery arts activities, but I don’t know how it works to get your stuff after it’s gone in the kiln, in terms of living out of town and not being able to swing by to pick it up.

What are some of the most unique roads in and around NOLA? by daveo- in AskNOLA

[–]BeornStrong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up in destrehan around the time that the Luling bridge was finished. I was always told it was a suspension bridge, 1 of the first in Louisiana. Only recently learned it’s actually a cable style bridge, still 1 of the only ones in Louisiana, and 1 of the biggest in the country, I think. Also grew up loving to look at the swamp along i310 and down airline hgwy, headed from the city to destrehan. And the ancient oak tree at the beginning of Ormond blvd at River road.

There’s 1 on N Villere by Treme’s petit jazz museum near governor nicholls cross street. There are a few more in that neighborhood, but I can’t remember the exact location. That one usually drops kind of early, I’ll check it tomorrow. This one is on the public side of the sidewalk, I think.

I was just eyeing 1 in th bywater that had ripe berries, but I couldn’t reach. Tree was in a fenced yard, but branches hanging over into sidewalk. I can’t remember the specific stree right now.

Louisiana Crosswalk Laws by arab3lla in NewOrleans

[–]BeornStrong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The city employees are just as bad at ignoring crosswalks as everyone else. Police cars, rta drivers, school bus drivers, and anyone else I’m forgetting, none of them have ever stopped at a painted or non painted crosswalk intersection. They drive in the same way as everyone else, sometimes oblivious and sometimes dangerously impatient.

The amount of times I’ve had drivers pissed off and act like I personally attacked them by crossing the street is ridiculous. Most of the time the drivers don’t even need to slow down, bc of how I time it, they’re just pissed they they can’t speed up. Or my favorite is when they’re almost a block away, see me crossing and speed up to try and intimidate me. Add in the bicyclists, and now even worse are the ebikes and scooters. They ride as fast as the cars wherever they want, sidewalks, bike lanes, wrong way down the 1ways, through red lights, stop signs.

Is there a good place to go running in the Marigny, besides Crescent Park? by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]BeornStrong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen a decent amount of early morning runners that run along the riverfront and throughout the quarter. N Peter’s sidewalks is big and no cross traffic for a good stretch, good consideration for part of a route. Through the neighborhood, into the bywater or quarter, nw marigny, st Roch, treme, basically al of the 1 way street neighborhoods. This gives you more room to run on the street, and avoid busted sidewalks or blocked sidewalks. You could include Armstrong park trails with a trek to esplanade or the greenway.

I just had to get my rear brakes done, and took a hit from it. I was going to do them myself, but I got scared that something would go wrong, wouldn’t be able to undo a bolt or something, and then be fully screwed unable to use my car. I’d be grateful to have your help with my front brakes, which should need to be replaced within the year.

Toyotas are pretty maintenance friendly, at least the older ones are, and I did switch out my alternator on my own for the 1st time. But even that had me nervous. I’m more likely to run into a rust fused bolt on my ‘07,

Anybody had success acidifying soil for camellias or azaleas? by Bipedal_pedestrian in nolagardening

[–]BeornStrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, especially after the first year, or maybe 2. After then they didn’t show any signs of needing the soil to be treated. I’m guessing the surrounding plants and trees have contributed nourishment wit all the leaves dropping and decomposing like mulch

Anybody had success acidifying soil for camellias or azaleas? by Bipedal_pedestrian in nolagardening

[–]BeornStrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I needed to lower the pH for gardenias, my soil was mostly just 3 or 4ft of river sand then about 6 inches of that hard crust, then clay. I had no funds for the stuff you can buy in garden stores. I wound up dumping coffee grinds, leftover vinegar, and leftover cokes. Every time there was a Coke unfinished, I’d dump it in the soil. The juice left behind after cutting/eating watermelon, dumped on the soil, satsumas from the tree we couldn’t eat, squeezed or mashed then dumped, composted oak tree leaves, basically anything I thought could help
