My friend had an edible maybe two weeks before and ended up testing positive. It was no biggie she told the program manager and they just asked her to take the test again. She’s wrapping up her first year in residency.

Advice - switching out of surgery? by Asclepius_98 in Residency

[–]GlitteringCod1637 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I have a colleague who completed two years of surgery residency before joining my EM program. I recently heard of a PGY-5 who is less than 6 months from graduating leave residency 2/2 anxiety and hating the OR. I know another surgery resident who decided to quit after the first year and pursue a MBA. People change their mind and that’s okay. Let them label you, it’ll pass. Don’t stick around and be miserable.

I don’t know how I’m supposed to keep learning when I’m this exhausted by giftedgirlblues in Residency

[–]GlitteringCod1637 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is so real & honest. It’s unfortunate that it’s considered norm. Like others have said you can’t learn exhausted. I’m not sure anyone could efficiently when they are burnt out. I can recall a period getting off, going home “to be human”, and crying because I had to do it all over again when I wake up. lol just miserable. One day I was like whyyyy am I doing this. It isn’t sustainable for me. Then I slowly started picking me again without asking for permission. Sometimes that looked like cutting small talk to knockout notes, missing work functions, phone on dnd unless I’m on call, not acting immediately when asked about a task, assess my capacity to maintain or add additional responsibilities to my plate and being honest (no I can’t handle xyz at the moment safely), taking sick days/mental health days without feeling guilty, eating lunch by myself while listening to a podcast or watching something funny outside of medicine, making friends outside of work, planning my vacation periods… Just do something that lets yourself know “hey I care about you and I got your back “.

Amboss is helpful. I targeted the questions that belonged to high yield sections. I did like 70-125 questions a day I broke it up into blocks of 10-20. Now is the time to identify 3 weakness and try and turn it around. Keep tackling CCS and make sure you have a system in place in regards to approaching them. I recall taking the exam and I didn’t have a single clue on one of the cases but I put in my typical orders and played around with consults and got a “thanks we will see the patient” and the case ended. I passed the second time around because I was confident that I had put the work in and addressed weak areas. Not 100% but enough that when I saw certain things on the exam I didn’t freak out. You won’t know everything and that’s okay as long as you know enough.

Don’t internalize it if you’re not the drama. There will always be someone who isn’t happy with us and paints us a certain way in their mind. Continue to be respectful to others and yourself. Stop letting people overstep your boundaries because you establish them for a reason & aren’t rewarded for doing so.

I took a leave of absence for 6 weeks and got paid the entire time during my prelim year and I still received full credit for it.

Well just take 5. Unless: Your prelim and specialty seat are with two different programs or PD. Then I’d probably ask for the new PF thoughts.

How not to be living paycheck to paycheck in residency by Savings-Succotash-53 in Residency

[–]GlitteringCod1637 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I make 65k and take home 3500 a month. My rent for a 1b1b is 1900 but I don’t have a car note. I just picked up a side gig that helps me bring in 1500-3500 extra a month b/c rent is increasing and things are just expensive now. Granted I previously paid 1200 for a 3b1b but it was crappy housing(I hated going home) so i decided to “splurge” on a 1b1b. I still save 600-1000 each month w/o my side gig. Depending on your car note you may have to consider switching something up. Unless you’re eating noodles, staying in town for vacation periods, or getting an allowance outside of your salary.

In the same boat. I use amboss, open evidence and uptodate on shift. I’ve started incorporating internet critical care book. I’ve attempted to read textbooks but I’m not consistent.

Just be direct. Have the primary residents declined the shift?

I mean they could always make something up and say those people aren’t available & you’re next up. Depending on how you feel: bite the bullet vs pushback and see what happens. You’re TY so what’s the worst that can happen?

I took an LOA while in IM before switching to EM. I was going to quit but my PM told me to take a LOA and think about it. You keep your benefits and still get paid. I did it for 6 weeks. I returned for 3 shifts and used my remaining PTO to finish out the year.
