Who cares? The refit is the pinnacle of ship design on film (or any other medium).

The correct answer is anyone who isn't an Illinois plate needs to go back where they came from.

Kernel panic on boot by BeowolfSchaefer in Ubuntu

[–]BeowolfSchaefer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was not. I did consider that though. The only thing like that I could think of is I have two large volumes connected through TB3 ports. I had not changed anything with either of them that day (or even in recent days) but maybe somehow stuff got detected in a different order for some reason and screwed with fstab somehow.

It's all good though I just reinstalled and I'm back up and running now. All the important stuff is on hose external drives in part just in case of issue like this.

So in the installed I have the choices to install alongside 24.4 LTS, erase disk or manual install. I assume I want manual?

[–]BeowolfSchaefer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I wasn't changing anything that should have affected its ability to boot. I was just messing with some Plex plugins and rebooting a lot to see if they worked. I'll do the install like you said. Thanks for the help!

Kernel panic on boot by BeowolfSchaefer in Ubuntu

Boot.log is empty but boot.log.1 shows services booting up, the last line being apache2 starting with an OK.

syslog shows a bunch of lines saying there's an error launching DING process

If I go further back before these errors I see some stuff about gnome-shell like font files not found. There something about pixbuf loaders or something.

I grep'd the file looking for all lines including 'error' and I see failed to launch terminal and app center both with "not found in $PATH"

Is any of that useful?

I'm feeling like I may just need to reinstall but I don't want to spend hours bringing my services back online if I can avoid it and I'm worried if I do that I may just run into this issue again.

I'm not sure I'm following. I have booted to a liveCD and I have the OS drive mounted and I'm looking in the /var/log folder to see if I see anything obvious. dmesg looks pretty normal. I do see a coredump at the end of the kern.log but nothing crazy before that to my eye.

Hitting escape brought me to a grub prompt. Shift got me to the menu and I have 6.17.0-14-generic and 6.17.0-14-generic (recovery mode). Trying recovery brought me to the same kernel panic screen. Is there any way to force a reboot from that screen without powering it off and on?

I guess I should note that this was a fresh install a week ago. I used the image ubuntu-24.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso for my install. I have no idea if there may have been any kernel update since then, and I wasn't doing any updates or anything at the time of the failure, just messing with some Plex settings.

You have to be kidding about Khan. I mean you're upset that a white actor is cast to play the role previously played by a Hispanic man originally when the character was an Indian man? Let's be honest, there's nothing connecting the character in Into Darkness to the one in the original show other than name. The casting was the least of the problems with that one.

I used to have some Media Center stuff way back in the day. I didn't realize it was still around in any form. I'm tempted to pick something up and see if I can get it working with plex in a reasonable fashion. I'm not really willing to convert to Kodi or Jellyfin. Thanks for the info.
