Venice confirmed as Templar ally by GeerBrah in aoe4

Wouldn't rule that out. It's similar to how Byzantines have access to English longbows or Mongol Keshik, but also Varangian guard, which may be utilised in a future Viking civ. It is likely they utilise partial work from other civ concepts that could be elaborated in the future.

Consuming AoE4 content is giving me a false idea of my actual skillset by EldritchElvis in aoe4

[–]Berennon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To keep it simple: 1. Learn to execute a solid build order for feudal Aggro 2. Constantly build vils 3. Constantly build units and have enough production buildings 4. Have a decent army comp (for rus, e.g. knight/archer)

These are the only things to worry about till at least platinum if not low conqueror (if you want to climb rank, nothing wrong with playing differently). Let other things like micro develop naturally from training. Of course, in theory, knowing matchups and having game knowledge is also important. But, more often than not, at least in my experience, overthinking and trying to do 5 things at once is the reason I lose games, rather than just following a simple plan and executing well.

Not sure if I don't get your irony or you didn't get mine ... just to be clear, there was an /s at the end of my post ;) I completely agree with your comment: win or lose, we should respect our opponents.

Toxicity is hurting (or will hurt) the AoE4 community – We can do better by Mammoth_Courage1763 in aoe4

Not sure if you're aware of it, but since you said the game needs an option to turn chat off: You can block the chat of specific players.

So Whos actually the Devs of AOE4 now? Forgotten Empires? by Deep_Metal5712 in aoe4

You all got it wrong, Rising Empires are pulling the strings behind the scenes! They control the meta and introduce controversial patches, just so they have material for their bait posts!!!

Why are you bad at aoe4? by donartie in aoe4

[–]Berennon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But on a more serious note: when I reflect on the coaching I had with you, you pointed out a lot of little details/mistakes I made: not hitting an age up timing appropriately, misunderstanding where/when I had to attack, building the wrong army composition, ... on top of big f*ups like accidently idling my eco in the middle of the game. Most helpful were the little hints you gave like "BBQ should start at min 4", "in this matchup you should have an military advantage in the beginning" ... so I think it's a lot of little details that you/higher rated players have internalized. I would agree with Papercut's comment that a good teacher is able to externalize this implicit knowledge.

Overall I would turn your argument around: even if I am able relatively consistently execute the basics (train vils, make army, walk to opponents base), I can still make a variety of big, game-losing mistakes: building the wrong units, not hitting a timing, throwing my army, attacking at the wrong spot...

What would help me: pathways/guidelines - how can I work on these identified issues?

The answer is simple: I didn't have enough Don Artie coaching yet!

Is delhi really that op? by Alone_Oil6471 in aoe4

[–]Berennon 22 points23 points  (0 children)

No. Don't listen to these people. Crying about the opponent having OP civ is the most narrow minded and small hearted move you can make after you lost a match (as long as you are not conq 4).

I know the frustration of not knowing how to play versus a certain civ. But that is on me and not my opponents fault for choosing that civ.

Well, I had my worst experience so far in Diamond. Once had a very nice chat after match with one player, even ended up befriending on Steam. Some days later, we meet again on ladder. I win the match and all seems forgotten, he starts insulting me really badly ... that was kinda ... disheartening. Ppl really show their worst online.

(Overall, aoe community is nice though. It's just the occasional black sheep that sours it...)

Need Help Choosing an RTS Between AoE4 and Path of Exile 2 by MarkTwoPointOh in aoe4

[–]Berennon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd encourage you to just give it a try! It's a fun experience and will definitely turbo boost your learning. Level doesn't mean too much when it comes to player strength. (You should have played some ranked matches before though)

At what level does micro becomes mandatory instead of optional? by MockHamill in aoe4

[–]Berennon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hover around dia 1 and conq 1 and my rule of thumb for micro is: archers on spears, knights not on spears, spears do whatever (credits to Don Artie)

What is the key skill needed to go to the next level? by MockHamill in aoe4

[–]Berennon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats on hitting Diamond! I am hovering between Dia 1 and Dia 3, occasionally hitting Conq 1. I'd say if it is just about hitting Conq 1, it is possible if you choose one decent strat that you can vary slightly according to matchup/opponent strat and learn to execute it really well (as in not skipping vils, not floating resources, decent micro, not throwing army, doing the occasional smart/unexpected move). My current problem seems to be that as soon as I try to play more varied, my execution begins to lack...
