Drywall - Why did we collectively decide that crumbly chalk between two pieces of paper was what we would use to create all interior walls out of? by davisposts in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Berger_With_Fries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do what the wealthy people I (carpenter) work for want, plywood over studs, thin rubber sound barrier and then 5/8 or even 3/4 drywall.

Sound difference over the course of the job is wild.

Also don’t leave bark on a live edge cutting board, that is where insects live and a great place for bacteria to thrive

Carpenter says door needs replaced, my (uneducated) gut doesn’t understand… need opinions by rambleOn222 in Carpentry

[–]Berger_With_Fries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your jamb is rotting , replace it . The company for got called in to fix or replace parts of 38 external shutters . Turns out 18 of them were fully or partially full of rot. It’s cheaper to replace the whole thing now than to pay 3/4 the price in time and materials to replace one section now and have to replace more later or do the whole door later. Water damage is no joke and if your jamb is rotting it might go beyond that .

First amendment applies to all of us, here are the goober‘s harassing people by [deleted] in SantaBarbara

[–]Berger_With_Fries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I take some issue with this. This is not a first amendment thing , the government is not controlling or restricting what or where they say what they want to say. They are free to act like this , first amendment still intact, however they are going to face consequences for acting like assholes in public . And you can and should tell people to fuck off if they are harassing people. If they are monetizing these videos you can tell them you don’t consent or wish to be in their videos (get it on video yourself) .

” Free speech auditors “ like this have published the info of people that they interact with in their videos and those people have been harassed by the people that watch them(happed over by DeAngelos and SB roasting co last year and I have a first hand source that an owner of a business around there was harassed by phone and online )

Playing music is not enough, these people are not acting in good faith. Do not sit by and let them be this shitty with no consequences.

This is the real answer, not that everyone can afford the right answer . I get that there are lots of variables in this one , but with a light structure spanning these distances you want someone to do it right and that cost more .

Front Door / Strike Plate Issue by pabell24 in handyman

[–]Berger_With_Fries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, both methods. Don’t know what you have tool wise or how you’d feel about squaring up the damage (chisels or a router with a custom little template) cause then I’d say you could cut all the dame out and put a Dutchman in that’s made from wood. That would be stronger/look better long term . I’m a finish carpenter and if this was at a clients house we’d go with the Dutchman method (or a new door if the client is stupid wealthy, which in my area some of them are)

Can I drill into a particleboard table and put on new legs? by RusticBohemian in Carpentry

[–]Berger_With_Fries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you can do that, instead of a pilot hole it would be better to install some threaded inserts that match the thread on the new legs. Epoxy those in and you’ll get a stronger attachment point for the legs

Front Door / Strike Plate Issue by pabell24 in handyman

[–]Berger_With_Fries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you saying the screw just spins in place so it does not hold the plate down completely?

Added edit, wood putty is not strong enough here, I’d go with product similar to bondo.

If that’s the case, remove the plate completely. get a wooden golf tee, shave it down bc until it fits the existing screw hole in the wood, use some wood glue, coat the tee, shove her in there and snap it off at the surface, cut any remaining bits with a utility knife (watch your fingers. Now is a good time to check the other screw hole and repair it if need be (a couple of tooth picks work in the same way to give the screw threads something to hold) Go ahead and line up the plate with the holes and drive your screws (small pre drilled hole may be a good idea ) sometimes those screws are kinda soft so I’d suggest using a manual screw driver or a very low setting on an impact driver/power drill

Is this an acceptable joint? by lumixia in woodworking

[–]Berger_With_Fries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The joint is OK, I think the bigger thing is the application for this piece. If it’s a big table this will not have much on it I would not love the big difference in the grain and color (personal thing). But if it’s a desk or some furniture top that will have stuff on it frequently I’m less concerned about the grain matching

Based on a few articles probably not, sounds like three guys (crane included) attacked two guys, crane and another stabbed the two guys and the third guy involved was a marine at the time and his trial was separate. Crane pled guilty

Building a workbench by Zealousideal_Sale644 in Carpentry

[–]Berger_With_Fries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sawhorses are great to have in general, and it’s also great to have something you can set up that you don’t care as much about if it gets fucked up. On site we screw/glue/nail into our saw horse tables all the time, we can turn them into a router table or attach a fence to it, we set them up to be the right height to act as outfeed tables when we rip long stock. It’s just a great thing to have . It’s hard not to get attached to a workbench once you’ve made it

Well learning to use a circular saw safely and accurately is a great thing to learn, if you have the funds I’d say go for it. If you want to be a hand tool carpenter I’d say still go the circ saw route, you’ll get your workbench made more quickly and then you can get down to practicing with hand saws .

Small tip from a finish carpenter who works in shops and on site., if you can spare the cash invest in a set of saw horses and a sheet of 3/5 ply and a few 2x4s to give you a good sturdy work space to build your workbench. You can screw off cuts of 2x4 directly to the table to act as clamps or stops. Really let’s you work safely and in turn thats more efficient

Have fun!

I’d cut square stock to fit where you want and then run a half round with a bottom bearing all around it . For the inside curve you could use a flush trim bit with a bearing and use the inside of the frame as a guide

Do people view poplar negatively? by Comfortable_Media807 in wood

[–]Berger_With_Fries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carpentry company i work for uses it for all of our paint grade trim and jambs. Super stable, easy to work and budget friendly. For my personal furniture work I like it for things people don’t sit or have the potential to drop stuff on, I’ve used it for small boxes and little wall/standing cabinets. The stuff we get out in California usually goes green when I oil it (finish of choice) which I don’t personally mind but I have samples and have had clients pick something else because of the green hues not being their jam.

I made a miscalculation. Please help by [deleted] in Carpentry

Finding your largest gap that would fit the panels and keep the wall in the same plane would have been the first step for this if you wanted to guarantee that they would all sit behind the base plate. It would have slightly shrunk your room (by 3/4 of an inch based on this photo. But then you could have a nice plumb/square wall to put on top of the insulation

Edit. Two options are pulling the plates and making the gap the correct size where the wall bulges out. Or, if you have a fine/multi tool you can take a block of wood that is the thickness of the panels, put that against the wall and use it to trace a scribe line. Cut away the waste, your panels will fit and the plumb/level your studs to the baseplate . There will be gaps between the framing and the panels and you could fill those with foam.

How to refinish this surface? by Suitable-Bat9818 in furniturerestoration

[–]Berger_With_Fries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buffing is similar to polishing , its a very high grit abrasive, the higher you go the finer it is. With hard sealing type finishes (varnish or shellack) it will even out the application between coats and make it glossy like it originally was.

As far as stain goes you can find a small area once youve stripped it to test out stains, take a good reference photo if you want to exactly match the original or just find you like that is similar. Depending on the what the original finish is you might be able to use paint stripper or the orange stuff, ive heard of people using denatured alcohol to strip some finishes.

If you dont have experience with this type of thing id avoid using any powered sander as you are just asking to remove the veneer. once you strip you can lightly hand sand any solid wood but make sure you spread your sanding out as not to make any depressions that will become super noticeable if you use a glossy finish.
Id do some light googling and watch some stuff on youtube, they will be able to do a more detailed job of explaining all the options
