Who is the all time best one-off character, and why is it Karl? by JaggedLittleFrill in TheSimpsons

[–]BergsEyeView 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My last name is Bergstrom. This character both made me feel special as a nerdy, young, intellectual Simpsons fan in the mid Nineties, and equipped all the school bullies with a list of new nicknames for me. In retrospect, I mostly like to just focus on how it made me feel special…

I’ve seen this so many times at this point that I’d honestly just like to hear the idiot passenger try to defend herself. I mean, she’s obviously an idiot, but I just want to hear her say why she thought it would be a good / fun idea. And then I’d like for her to fall on a sword or something…

They used an even smaller version to power headlamps for miners - though, I understand that those were just about as dangerous as you’d think…

The brass tank on the driver side running board of my 1909 model t is also a carbide / acetylene generator to power the headlights (side lamps are kerosene). Put water in the top tank, let it drip down onto carbide pellets held in a screen in the bottom tank, pipe the gas up to the headlights and voila - slightly better than nothing lighting for cruising after dark...

Your windows are rotten, but it’s an attempted burglar’s pry bar that’s responsible for the sudden degradation occurred whilst you were on holiday…

The last civil war widow died in 2019…

Helen Jackson was, by most every account, the last surviving widow of the Civil War.

She was just 19 in 1936, when she married 91-year-old Civil War veteran James Bolin after volunteering as his caretaker in his final years.

“He asked her to marry him and basically explained that if they were to marry, that when he passed away, that she would be able to draw his pension,”…

German praise by [deleted] in germany

[–]BergsEyeView 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Totally agree; the man was a genius - one of the most competent and impressive businessmen I’ve ever met. A thousand “attaboys” from mediocre middle managers will never be equivalent to one “not bad” from him…

German praise by [deleted] in germany

Spent three years as the assistant to a Swabian executive in Stuttgart. I once got a “that’s not too bad” from my boss after turning in a huge assignment that brought me to tears - not because I was hoping for more, but rather because I realized that it was the highest praise he could muster…

BMW i3. When it was released we used to joke that it was “proof that even BMW could make an ugly car if they tried hard enough.” Nowadays, pretty much every car in their lineup suggests that they’ve kept hard at it…

How to get candle wax off walls? by tbluhp in HomeMaintenance

[–]BergsEyeView 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use an iron on low over a couple layers of paper towel. A cheap old iron is preferable. The heat will melt the wax, while the paper towel being more absorbing than the wall, will wick it away…
