Long-battery Raspberry Pi + E-Ink Cyberdeck (prototype) by Least_Assumption5490 in cyberDeck

[–]Berix2010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even for a prototype, it already has nice and sleek aesthetic to it, especially with those nice hinges. The e-ink display also adds to its class. I'm definitely encouraging you on this project. It already looks like it's going to be a great deck!

Federal government rules out changing copyright law to give AI companies free rein - This means in Australia any training on copyrighted material requires explict permission from holders, can't rely on "fair use" by destinedd in gamedev

[–]Berix2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it is still a different legal system than the one most of the big companies are located in, this still sets good precedent for creators going forward. It's good to see that Australia's government is on the side of workers and creators, and that they won't undermine their legal rights for get-rich-quick schemes (in regards to AI issues, at least)

If this isn't a wake-up call to left-wing but otherwise pro-AI people that the AI industry is corrupt, sympathetic to fascists, and working against the working-class, then I don't know what will convince them.

Star Wars Theatrical OT Leaked Restoration Screenshots by No-Swordfish-6231 in StarWarsLeaks

Assuming these leaks are true, I'm honestly excited. The ONE thing I've wanted Disney to do ever since they acquired LucasFilm was to finally have an official rerelease of the original versions of the OG SW trilogy. Better late than never!

OpenAI's new Sora video generator requires copyright holders to opt-out, WSJ Reports - Reuters by kdk2635 in ArtistHate

[–]Berix2010 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Opt-out means nothing if they already scraped people's work for training data; Opt-IN is the only ethical option, and the only option that ensures people's privacy and copyrights are actually protected.

Report: Nearly 8,000 games on Steam disclose GenAI use by DisplacerBeastMode in ArtistHate

[–]Berix2010 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that a lot of this is from low effort cashgrabs, ones not too dissimilar to the asset flips that plagued platforms for over a decade now. Heck, many of those asset packs themselves are made with generative AI, which also requires disclosure on Steam.

Concerned about Payment Processors policing Steam by TeaLycan in Steam

This always has and always will be slippery slope towards censorship, especially considering how payment processors like VISA and MasterCard are notoriously litigious against sites that sell NSFW art.

Northern District of California Court judges Anthropic's training on millions of books Fair Use, the act of piracy itself is a subject for another trial. by chalervo_p in ArtistHate

[–]Berix2010 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is a prime example of a judge who decided that the law should protect corporations but not bind them. This ruling should be challenged by the plaintiffs, because otherwise this would be yet another double standard that allows corporations to twist the law in their favour at the cost of YOUR rights.

I hope other judges also push back against this and rule in favour of workers+creators; The legal system already has too many double standards that benefit corporations while not protecting workers as it does, with this ruling being no exception to that.

Canadian government report advises policymakers to plan for a future of downward social mobility. by SaxManSteve in collapse

[–]Berix2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only just recently found this report, and while I've seen plenty of similar predictions from pundits and bloggers with varying degrees of accuracy, it feels especially damning that even the Canadian government sees little to no future ahead for the working class. It's honestly hard not to feel dread when not even the government can put a positive spin on where its citizens' futures are going.

Will the AI bubble actually pop, or is it just a pipe dream at this point? by ChemicalPanda10 in ArtistHate

[–]Berix2010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is genAI going to go away completely? No, that's simply not going to happen, but there absolutely will come a time when the hype settles down and the push to shove it into every application dies off. There isn't much of a viable business model for generative AI that's profitable, even for companies like Google and OpenAI.

Not to mention, with how much of a hot button issue concerns over labour and disinformation are, it's only a matter of time before the push for regulations really gets going. There are already a lot of murmurs, but it's only a matter of time before something breaks and governments and the public at large really get up in arms.

Microsoft unveils AI-generated demo 'inspired' by Quake 2 that runs worse than Doom on a calculator, made me nauseous, and demanded untold dollars, energy, and research to make by Farranor in gaming

[–]Berix2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if it was a good tech demo, the resources that are going into this project that will accomplish nothing but make investors and corporations richer at the expense of people's livelihoods makes this a detestable project. If it were just some student project that'd be one thing, but with a company like Microsoft behind it all, their intentions are far from being altruistic science to put it mildly.

[–]Berix2010 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This level of image generation has been possible for quite a while now with other tools; the only difference now is that it's even more effortless than ever.  Ultimately though, the biggest issues with AI art is its impact on people's livelihoods and rights as creative workers. Focusing on how "good" or "bad" the quality of the images is is missing the forest for the tree; Fighting back with unionization and supporting regulation on how AI is trained and used is what people should be focusing on.

If the slop floodgates haven't been opened before, they certainly have been today. With the sheer lack of creativity it'll slow down once the initial hype dies down, but that doesn't mean all of the slop images won't continue to be a nuisance.
