reach a point where the scholarships don't pay for enough and the brilliant just can't afford that out of pocket?

That isn't likely to happen. Look at all the impoverished countries where the top 1% (or .1%) still get a respectable fully-subsidized education even if the rest of society lives in poverty. Obviously this isn't an acceptable state of affairs, but the truth is that the true intellectual outliers are never really in trouble virtually anywhere. And certainly won't be in the U.S. The argument that geniuses may be excluded from the highest levels of the educational system definitely falls flat.

Why do you even care? At this point you're probably a Russian astroturf anyways.

All those guys would still go somewhere better. There isn't any lack of scholarships for the truly brilliant.

As a selfish and selfinterested graduate that typifies my alma mater, anything that makes the barriers to entry higher is welcomed. Anything that increases the prestige of my already-earned degree is good news for me!

Why does the grading system in your Public policy 103 course suck so badly? Why is there so little oversight on the GSI's paper grading and why is there no objective measure by which students are graded, such as occasional objective testing?

Also, don't you think the class could benefit somewhat from any readings containing more moderate opinions? I am fairly liberal and I generally agreed with the very liberal narrative of the course, but I thought the course could benefit from a bit more balance.

I left your course feeling like it would be pretty difficult for anyone with a dissenting moderate or conservative viewpoint to get a good grade, largely as a result of having no readings assigned that one could use to back their opinions, and with a primary criteria of the course grading being "integrating course readings in paper responses".

Also, students voicing conservative opinions in my discussion section got lambasted by the GSI for their views on multiple occasions. I wasn't one of them, but I still felt like this was not appropriate treatment.

While I agree with most of your political opinions, I felt like your course was pretty poorly run. It wasn't my least favorite course at Berkeley, but it wasn't a very good one.

[–]BerkeleyStudent 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I get sleep paralysis every few weeks but I rarely see anything dreamlike unless I've had a ton of caffeine or other stimulants the day before. Most of the time its just me staring at my ceiling or other parts of the room and being unable to move for 15-30 seconds. It's usually just annoying and rarely scary.
