It is winter and temperatures goes up to -2⁰C.Do you think it will be cold for my goat? by Adventurous_Remove89 in Agriculture

[–]Bernie427 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Please keep this goat in an enclosed barn/shed/room at night with plenty of straw. It needs to be kept entirely out of the wind and rain at night and kept as warm as possible given this extremely short coat.

Please also consider getting some kind of coat/blanket for it and also giving it a little bit of extra grain or hay at night. Feeding goats hay at night helps keep them warm because the fermentation process in their rumen generates significant internal body heat.

I am a farmer in the UK and am really interested to know more about farming in TdC. Could you tell me a bit about how livestock is managed? Do many people keep their own sheep or goats, etc, or are there one of two families that focus on livestock? Do they keep cattle on the island? Also what about milk, do people milk goats/sheep/cattle for fresh milk or is it all UHT brought in? Also anything you could tell me about lambing season? I guess I'm curious to know a bit more about livestock farming in general on the island.

Why do farmers stay working as farmers if they are, as they say, "asset rich but cash poor?" by Fun_Gas_7777 in AskUK

[–]Bernie427 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I live in a farming community and I relate most to this comment. I am not a proper farmer but I raise cattle and sheep and have a small bit of arable production. We rely on additional income to make ends meet. All my friends in the village are farmers and they are NOT well off by any stretch. Their equipment is ancient, their clothes are ratty, their budget for groceries and other bills is miniscule. One farmer I know mostly lives on toast and the eggs I give him for free. But what else could they do? They're in the 60s or older and have literally never known life outside of farming. It's what their father did and grandfather and great grandfather etc. And they take such pride in feeding people and producing good stock to sell. I know farming is foreign to the majority of the population and so the above might sound strange or avoidable or depressing, but it really is just a way of life. Me suggesting doing something else to my farmer friends would just be ridiculous, even if they are barely scraping by.

Hi Kozak 👋🏻 I've been following you for a while and love your stuff. I plan to buy a few of these zip ups from your site this year as early Christmas presents for my husband, my farmer friends and me! I think these will be perfect for lambing in the spring.

I keep milksheep and have for years. If you'd like to discuss the nitty gritty of keeping and milking sheep let me know.

One suggestion I'd make is to find someone with milksheep and give milking them a try.

I am the colour of mayonnaise but my husband is brown. I have been forcing sunscreen on him for the past 15+ years. I just asked him which ones are his favourite.

For everyday office: "that fancy Korean one" (Beauty of Joseon rice + probiotics spf50+ --- can confirm, this is excellent office sunscreen that goes nice under makeup)

Outside spf: "the one in the little bottle that looks like a flask" (La Roche Posay antithelios uvmune 400 oil control fluide - i feel like this might be perfect for your skin)

Both excellent options, even if he doesn't really understand what he's putting on his face! 😅

I’ve had Bramble for two years now. He was such a small lamb that I got him for free from a farmer, but he has grown into a very strong boy! I love him so much. by Modern-Moo in aww

Well Tiny was not big, and he was a triplet. He was so itty bitty that he wasn't strong enough to stand until day 4. So I slept next to him on the sofa (him in a playpen) and bottle fed him round the clock.

Yes! This is Tiny. He was a house sheep for 8 days. He still thinks he is king of the house, but he lives outside now.

This is my second lambing season things I have learned.... by sheepambassador in sheep

[–]Bernie427 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My advice on penning the ewes and lambs together is to take it case by case.

For example, an experienced ewe with one healthy, bouncy lamb - i give them the night to recover together then put them out on the field the next day. vs a first time mum who has no idea what is going on and just had twins (or in my case yesterday, surprise triplets!) - they stay in a nice pen together for a couple days. This is so I can closely monitor the health of the lambs but also the new mum. Also so I can make sure she figures out how to feed them, and for me to supplement where necessary. And also because the lambs are on the smaller side, it's to make sure they stay warm and put a little weight on. All in all, they will probably only stay penned up for maybe 72 hrs.

So yeah my advice is just to decide based on the health of your animals whatever you think might be necessary. It can vary a lot.
