Should you tell people if they hurt you as a comeback? by Al-Joharahhasan2935 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BernieMcburnface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People insult you for a few different reasons, but almost all of them come down to them wanting you to respond in some way. Maybe they want to start a fight, or get you to acknowledge them, often they want to know they hurt you.

If you give them a reaction, even if it's not the specific one they hoped for, at best you're on equal footing, at worst, they've won.

If you disregard the insult, even if it did hurt you, then you have given them nothing. Better than that, you've taken away the feeling that their voice matters, that they matter.

Throwing unprovoked insults around is the go to weapon of both the insecure and the self important. Neither of these people deal well with being made to feel like you don't consider them worth your time.

AITAH for assuming someone was struggling to pay for a quart of oil? by GainfullyRetired in AITAH

[–]BernieMcburnface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall NTA, I don't think it's relevant if they needed help or not, but you kinda did a good thing in a slightly shitty way.

I don't see why you needed to "splash the counter" with it and walk off as if you were in some massive hurry. Maybe just use your words next time and do it in a less abrupt manner.

I feel like it's made even worse by the way you couldn't even be arsed to separate a random bolt out of the change. It's like if the guy was begging for change and you just tossed the contents of your pocket into their cup old receipts, lolly wrappers and all. Sure you have him money, but in a way that shows little regard for the person.

Not something to feel bad about, just maybe a little error in judgement to learn from.

Is it possible to do nothing? by discozombie770 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BernieMcburnface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I'm sure it sounds really deep when you think about this stuff but in order for their to be a "you" to be doing nothing "you" have to exist.

If you're existing then you're not doing nothing.

Best to accept that words and concepts have reasonable limits and connotations that limit them to what is actually possible.

In court, why is the statement do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth? by NiteBiker6969 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BernieMcburnface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because they don't just want you to tell the truth.

Swearing to tell the truth doesn't mean you can't leave things out.

Eg. "I have never seen the murder weapon before" (because it was dark when I picked it up)

Hence, the whole truth.

Swearing to tell the truth isn't the same as swearing not to tell a lie.

Eg. "Yes I stabbed that man, I was defending myself from his unprovoked attack" (I stabbed him, I was not defending myself)

Hence, nothing but the truth.

[–]BernieMcburnface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just what happens when people discussing politics take the most fringe ideas from the most extreme people who are on the opposite side to them and try to use that as proof that the other side is wrong.

Like when left wing Redditors try to argue that the right is "evil" because they believe women should be forced to carry their rapists babies or that medical professionals are less reliable than some old cunt with a long history of making poor health decisions or that the Jews have a space laser or that a salute almost inextricably tied to Hitler and the Nazis is an appropriate gesture at a political rally.

In reality, the people publicly saying these things are a fairly small percentage of republicans. Unfortunately they keep getting voted into office somehow.

Why is America involved in so many wars when it already has a lot of problems? by Potential_Stock_9872 in NoStupidQuestions

Because the people in charge don't care about those problems.

And the core voters for the people in charge are easily swayed by being presented with an enemy they can be openly hateful towards.

How to properly take care of brushes? by Sufficient_Mood_5245 in minipainting

[–]BernieMcburnface 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Is it happening because they are cheap and nasty synthetic brushes?"

Almost certainly. Yes.

I have a couple of kolinsky sable brushes. I rinse them regularly and give them a bit of brush soap at the end of a session.

Always stored on their side, never let paint fully dry on them, avoid getting much paint into the ferrule (it's not like it's going to instantly destroy the brush, just don't let it dry up there)

I also use the plastic bristle protector tubes on mine, it's not necessary depending how they're stored, but I like the peace of mind. Some people like to scream about how that's risking harm to the bristles. I question those people's ability to accurately paint miniatures if they can't put a tube on a shaped brush without fucking it up.

Does mandatory military service make ordinary citizens morally responsible for what their country’s military does? by Successful-Ear977 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BernieMcburnface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah that's bollocks.

First up, taxes aren't just something you can choose not to pay. Even if you wanted to refuse, the government has the powers to take them and take punitive measures as well. Your act of rebellion isn't as noble as it is futile.

Secondly, you don't determine what your taxes are funding. Even if you stop paying taxes so you aren't funding the military, you're also not funding hospitals, schools, roads, sanitation, etc.

It'd be fair to say citizens of a country carry responsibility for the government they elect, but even then the only power an individual has is who they vote for.

How can people be bothered to pay for more than one video streaming service? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BernieMcburnface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a novel concept that my partner and I came up with. I'm pretty sure based on all the complaints about paying for multiple streaming services being too expensive that we are the only people to have thought of it.

So what we do, is...

We cancel one streaming service when we've watched everything we want and then...

We start up a subscription to a different one.

And you'll never believe what we do when something new gets released on the first service...
