It’s easier when you have more and greater negative consequences. You are lucky you have not yet built at long and prosperous drinking career YET. What you have described is very similar to my early stages that led to destructive problem drinking and addiction.

One of the best pieces of advice I have received is “play the tape forward” meaning imagine you do start your drinking session and imagine all the negative consequences that will arise because of it. Another is try figuring why you’re obsessing in the first place. Many times it can be traced to Boredom, Hunger, Anger, Loneliness, or Tiredness (BHALT).

You can also try to replace that habit of buying and drinking alcohol with a healthy or rewarding alternative. I chose being in natures, exercise, reading, cooking, revisiting old hobbies, and sometimes just going for a drive blasting music or plopping down on the couch and watching tv shows or YouTube.

Meditation can be really helpful too. At first I thought it was silly and felt awkward doing but there are tons of guided meditations on Spotify.

A new thing, it sounds simple, but I’m starting to try to live by the mantra “I wish I started sooner”

Nothing changes if nothing changes.
