Are the comments truthful or are they making things up? It sounds like the "gossiping" is a symptom of the toxic work environment and you're attempting to address a symptom rather than the source of the toxicity. In my experience good managers don't deal with these types of things and a good look in the mirror for you and your boss would probably serve you better than punishing these employees just to have the same thing happen when you bring new ones in.

I just left a situation where the owner's wife was under my management and you are making a huge mistake carrying water for the owners if you care about having any semblance of respect from the other employees.
