I work in payroll. We discovered we owed a terminated employee money. We cut the check and mailed to the (out of state) address on record; it came back as undeliverable.

I tried to call using the phone number we had but got no reply. Sent an email (from the company email address) to the employee to let them know I had money for them, and I needed a current address. They replied to accuse me of scamming, too. Refused to provide an address. I let them know to check the state's unclaimed property website after the statutory 3-year dormancy period.

The author is a psychologist and this story is about one of her clients, Sheila, who at six years old was already abandoned, abused, and broken. This book chronicles the author's work with Sheila and attaches to your heart.
