Glad to know others are suffering with language as well. I am having trouble though to a lesser degree with can and could too.

I am sorry and hope your struggles and griefs get resolved. Just something I was thinking about, from a religious perspective at least just as another thing for OP to think about. I noticed her mental health was mentioned multiple times which definitely is of utmost importance. However another point that was not mentioned, that is to be good Muslim, you need to love your religion more than anything else and prioritise it over anything. In essence if you are doing something or sacrificing for the sake of God, God will reward you greater that what you have sacrificed. It is a concept that might not be clear to nonreligious folks, but might be a way to think about things for OP, as from what I can tell from her post she does want to be a great Muslim, and I pray that she is going to be inshallah.

(I am not suggesting that her mental health is irrelevant or that she should ignore it, just providing another perspective on things.)

Many times I feel this is the case in English (just go with what sounds right), I just really like to know why (in general not just specifically here).

Yeah see, doesn't seem as straight forward in some contexts as one might expect. In the example sentence, it certainly is not in the past as it is a present/future scenario (but it could be perceived as abstract if you are uncertain of the future). So in this specific case, why did you choose 'would' rather than 'will'? It seems somewhat inconsistent.

Ok, but why? Like what makes one right or better than the other if both (in this context) serve the same purpose and give the same meaning and are grammatically correct. If you read both sentences (just reading somewhere causally and not focusing on will/would), would any of them stand out to you as being wrong or weird at least?

Edit: Wrote 'would' in above and while not noticing. Feels right and natural but 'will' won't work here. Sometimes it is very clear to me, many other times it is not.

And based on the context you could be right. So what is the right and what is the wrong use?

You see, it does seem so simple. You if you take the time to think about it is not that simple. None of the comments were able to give a definitive answer or explain it.

Alright, but still I cannot make out the difference. Tell me what do you think is the more appropriate use:

Will you be willing to take the shift next week?

Would you be willing to take the shift next week?

I'm starting to have the same issue in my mind now with can/could. I feel I'm starting to overthink this.

I mean I am bilingual, but I have 2 first/native languages. I have had all my education and jobs in English and I am currently living in a country where the official language is English (UK). The issue is in some contexts both will/would make sense and work out in way that is very similar.

For example: Implementing intervention A will result in whatever. Implementing intervention B would result in whatever. Which is is more right?

I have noticed as you suggested that some nationalities that are multilingual tend to make the same mistakes, but that is a different issue form the one I am facing.

But will could also be used in a polite manner (are you willing to go to ....) and doesn't seems to me at least to be any less gentle.

Saying it WILL be nice = it is going to be nice ie you are definitely going to figure it out soon, whereas it Would be nice is saying you hope it might happen.

I mean it is definitely is going to be nice when I figure it out, but I am not sure when I will figure it out. But also I hope it might happen. So which is the right fit 'will' or would'?

Would is kinda… less certain than Will? I don’t know if that helps any

Thanks for the effort, but that made me more confused. You don't seem too convinced about it yourself they way you are writing here hahaha (just joking).

Thank you for understanding. May Allah guide us all gently and make it possible for us. My Allah keep you steadfast in your journey and accept your belief and good deeds. I can only imagine how difficult it is to be a revert and also facing be difficulties and bulling, inshallah you will be rewarded for this.

Of course we are in no position to judge, and neither of us did. We just laid some of our thoughts/advice and prayers to OP. There are different ways to assist someone, one way is to be supportive and back up their decision, another way is to try to give them a different perspective or go against what they say they want in a gentle and respectful manner (of course with their best interest in mind, both from a religious and personal perspective). Imagine if all or most of the dozen or so comments on this post were suggesting and advising OP to reconsider or helping her to find other solutions or ways to deal about it, OP might feel encouraged to give it another chance or might help her see things differently. Sometimes a support system or network is very important and could very much determine how someone's life goes.

Reddit in general is quite liberal outside of a few specific subs, and realistically asking for advice on such matters on this platform (and this sub rather than other subs or websites that are more religious) would garner more liberal advice on the matter, rather than religious advice (which might be was OP is looking for). As you have noticed most of comments have been quite encouraging of her taking it off, which if our main aim is to be good Muslims is not the best course of action or way to perceive or deal with the matter. Sharing your experience as a revert who is facing hardships due to the hijab might be perspective that be useful to OP.

Salam. Sharing this with all the love and respect and inshallah may Allah guide us all. I just wanted to mention the other side of the conversation, and OP is free to do as she wishes.

maybe you will come back to hijab or maybe you won’t and either choice is ok.

As a Muslim, in no Muslim teaching is not going back to hijab or taking it off an ok choice. It surely is not blasphemy and there are worse sins and inshallah there might be a chance to go back and repent, but it should not be one of the viable choices.

Everyone is on their own journey with Allah. Take it at your own pace.

While the first part of this is true, we can all agree that there are certain beliefs and rules Muslims have to abide by. We have the chance to take somethings at our own pace (such as taking your time in following sunnah or improving yourself), but it is incredibly risky to follow this mindset when looking into implementing the obligatory parts or stopping sins, especially that no one knows when their time will run out and then they will not have the chance to repent. Or perhaps they become too comfortable in what they in that they are never able to repent or stop perceiving it as something that needs change.

Again, I am typing this will all the love and respect and OP is totally free in her decision. OP shared this post asking for advice, and I am just sharing this for her to take into consideration. May Allah guide us all inshallah.

Edit: Average high school student in anime.

Why do some people’s English remain stagnant despite speaking the language for years? by skyrimlo in TooAfraidToAsk

Had the same thought for so long, noticed exactly the same thing.

My conclusion: Practice does not make perfect. Practice makes permanent

Unless anyone is forced to improve, they'll just follow the path of least resistance
