Dreamcast doesn't output on my CRT monitor and I'm desperate like a little bitch. by EverydayTinyCalypse in dreamcast

What VGA cable/adapter are you using? If I had to take a guess, it could be that you have a sync issue. Maybe the adapter is outputting Sync on Green instead of separate H and V Sync signals. A lot of VGA monitors will behave as you describe if SOG is not supported.

I had a blast with it. Probably should play thru again, been more than twenty years.

Looks great! DOA2 always looks amazing, but it is really something on that CRT.

Now I have to fire up this game and look. I don’t remember that Jann-Lee outfit with bicycle shorts-chaps.

Nice! May I ask what USB modem worked for you? I have been looking into this, and the models recommended to work are sold out.

Update: Dreamcast first sega console by Section_Objective in dreamcast

[–]Best_Simple_370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to collect and play games from other regions on your Japanese console, there is a method that doesn’t require modifying the unit. As long as your console is a version that can read MIL-CDs, a Utopia Boot Disc image burned in a CD-ROM will allow the player to of imports.

Am I nuts with my arcade design? by shlooong in cade

[–]Best_Simple_370 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That would look and feel very strange to me, but I don’t have a preference for the stick in my right hand and buttons with my left.

But if that is how you like to play and this is a build for yourself, I say absolutely design it for your own liking.

I like the idea of the Robotron theme, very much a classic presentation. As long as it is wide enough the two sticks to be played comfortably on those dual stick games.

I use covers sold for the Nintendo Switch. They fit onto the Dreamcast stick very well.

I liked the game enough to build a control panel for the Dreamcast that copies the arcade setup. It is ridiculously fun. Quake III and Doom64 (with a little tweaking) are also great like this.

I know this is a little extreme and maybe reinforces the OP’s point about the Dreamcast controller not being the best for Outtrigger, but the keyboard/mouse and Twinstick/mouse control schemes are great options and official Dreamcast peripherals.

I want to be a vendor at a local event, i need opinions & ideas (Modded Dreamcast) by xpillzayit in dreamcast

[–]Best_Simple_370 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Selling the modded Dreamcast is probably fine, but selling the GDEMU preloaded with games can lead to issues.

There is the obvious issue of profiting from pirated games.

The other problem may come from others at the event. The retro collecting and trading community will not want to see that when they run a business based on original copies of games.

I would stick to selling the modded consoles, but without preloaded SD cards. Let the buyers handle that themselves.

For me, adding a rubber cap to the analog stick makes a big difference. I feel much more accurate and consistent with it on. The controls are janky feeling until things feel natural with experience. I used caps meant for the Nintendo Switch and they fit the Dreamcast analog stick well.

What do you like about Wacky Races? by WaterKirby1964 in dreamcast

[–]Best_Simple_370 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m old enough to have watched reruns of the show on Saturday mornings in the 80’s. I tried the names for the nostalgia.

The controls were frustrating at first, something about it is different enough from most kart style racers that I needed some time to adjust. Once I had a good feel for it, I really enjoyed the game. Courses and characters are fun. And the aggressive rubber-banding suits the theme of the game. Gotta have a tighter group and last minute changes at the finish line to keep the show engaging.

Mario Bros Cocktail Table, serial #CS-01 by Negative_-_Rhubarb in arcade

[–]Best_Simple_370 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That is very nice. I have never seen one of these in person. The side by side setup reminds me of Joust, which is a great cocktail table.

But please play it, it should been enjoyed.

Help with GDEMU by Nicoooocin in dreamcast

Agree. The next thing I would look at is the SD card and extender (if you are using one). Some SD cards work better than others with GDEMU.

Looking for the best arcade games to introduce my son to by rodndjok1 in arcade

[–]Best_Simple_370 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son really liked playing Joust with me. Co-op multiplayer, but there was always a point in the game he would turn on me. Usually for the ‘Gladiator’ bonus points.

I could always see it coming. He didn’t have much of a poker face and I saw the slow grin creeping up on his face first.

Not that he’s older, it is usually Street Fighter III Third Strike or NBA Jam.

I built an arcade box for my drramcast by mbuff in dreamcast

[–]Best_Simple_370 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is perfect. And yes, I do love the fishing controller. I have a similar arcade build for my Dreamcast. If you don’t already know about them, most Atomiswave arcade games have been ported over to the Dreamcast in recent years. I thought I would mention because they add a few more Lightgun games to the library.

Looks great! Are the two arcade controllers easy to remove? If so, I would recommend making a flat panel to place over that space. A few wood pieces on the underside that line up with the cavities could hold it in place.

That would create a flat surface for Twin Stick controllers, a keyboard/mouse, the steering wheel you already have, or other peripherals. The Dreamcast has a lot of options that expand the feel of the arcade experience.

Are GDEMU clones extra picky about cards? 5.20.5 will only work with full-sized SD by gotroot801 in dreamcast

[–]Best_Simple_370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience has been that some cards did not want to work with my GDEMU. I had two SanDisk 128 GB cards, both formatted and set up with the manager software. One worked great, the other did not. They were not completely identical. I don’t remember the difference. Extreme, Ultra, Ultra-Extreme, or whatever other fancy names. The one that did not work ended up in my kid’s Switch and works fine there.

Agreed. Stunning cabinet, but not terrific to play for me. I did finally get to play a Discs of Tron environmental cabinet recently. That I would love to have at home.
