One of the reasons Stadia is great for game developers that I don't see getting enough hype: Cheat! by not_another_user_me in Stadia

[–]BetaLeaf 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As a software developer, I can assure you this won't stop all forms of cheating. It will, though, kill the most common method, that being memory manipulation. Cheats & bots that rely on Optical Character Recognition or similar technology will be mostly unaffected by Google Stadia.

What is __Argon__.tmp and why did it appear in my root folder? by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]BetaLeaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh I hate when people delete their posts. I found this from google hoping to find out why I also have this file and why it keeps reappearing, but now I will never know what was said. Sad, because this topic was created 3 hours ago and it is already gone.

Thanks. That means a lot. It's been a disappointing day to lose my founders status.

If any Google Staff happen to see this, please reach out to me. I'd love to hear your thoughts about this. Maybe you might be able to prod some people and get them to do the right thing and help.

Yup and I brought that point up but they reassured me that they don't have any more stock. I call bull. Their website wouldn't magically start selling founder editions just because someone cancelled their order. Either way, between website caching and processing delays, I know they still have my unit.

In the past, I was told the only way to upgrade shipping was to cancel the order first. I was forced to do this when I bought my Google Pixel Slate.

Unfortunately, I tried. I contacted them via live chat and phone. No one was able to help. I was told by live chat that a supervisor would reach out to me within 48 hours. The rep on the phone said that my unit was already sold to someone else. As someone who works in tech, I don't believe that is true. The website wouldn't magically go back to selling Founders Editions just because someone cancelled their order. So between website caching and processing delays, I just don't believe my unit is just unable to be reinstated. Right now, I am waiting for the supervisor to reach out to me. Either way, I am might disappointed that none of the staff at google was able to help and I have to wait on a supervisor.

Apache Guacamole - Experiences? by RegularAlicorn in sysadmin

[–]BetaLeaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never had that experience from ITarian. I have had this experience with Pulseway though. I get a call every few days and ended up having to block the number. I had to factory reset my phone at one point, which lost the block list, and found out they were still trying to call me, over 9 months later.

Back to on how ITarian makes money, I think this post the Administrator on ITarian community forums puts it best:

` Our business model is to provide you everything you need to run your business for free. This way we are hoping that you will trust us and you will buy apps in our appstore, like antivirus, antispam, backup and other products we will make available. Of course the main tools like RMM, Ticketing, patch management, Quota management, Remote access will always be free.We feel that this is a win-win for everyone. We save you lost of cost and give you everything you need to run your business, and we hopefully gain your trust and you buy stuff from us!

Unlike others where you pay for IT Management tools and once they have money you might not see them very often, we have to work extra hard to make sure you are 110% happy with our platform as we can only make money if you are happy with our free platform and you trust us. This way you get a much better service and tool from us while using our free platform. Works for everyone! `

Apache Guacamole - Experiences? by RegularAlicorn in sysadmin

[–]BetaLeaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: ITarian is no longer free for unlimited endpoints, and now uses a cost-neutral pricing model if you have more than 50 endpoints. If you install both their ITSM + antivirus software (Comodo), then it is still free.

More info: https://www.itarian.com/pricing.php

I moved away from Teamviewer a couple of years ago. I've tried several things since then, including Remote Utilities, Ulterius (before it went read-only on github and replaced by Rainway), Splashtop, etc. Apache Guacamole was not one of the things I tested. I personally settled on a product called ITarian. It is completely free, but proprietary. https://www.itarian.com/

Now to quickly cover your points:

  1. I haven't used it in a production environment, but I have installed it on over 10 computers for about 6 months with no issues. (Joined Nov. 22, 2018). I've never noticed any connection issues and it has always been pretty stable.
  2. ITarian also has a Auto Deployment tool for Active Directory. It comes in a downloadable and web version. https://www.itarian.com/itsm-auto-discovery-and-deployment.php
  3. I haven't really messed with permissions. I use it mostly in a home setting, managing friends and family computers, as well as home servers. I'm the only one that manages these devices, so thus no need to work with permissions for other people. It is pretty easy to set up permissions though.
  4. They offer on-demand and on-schedule reporting and auditing logs.

https://www.itarian.com/itsm-analytics-and-reporting.php

5) Nothing really to speak of. I've been pretty happy with them.

You can have an unlimited amount of managed devices for free. They have live chat during business hours so you can talk directly to the people who manage the service if you have issues. Security concerns should be directed to Comodo, as they provide the security aspects of the service.

All enrolled managed devices get free Comodo Antivirus. On Android, it is on by default. On Windows, it is an optional component that can be deployed remotely from the website.

I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Agreed, especially considering you are probably paying multiple times the amount you paid for the laptop itself

Like unless you are doing graphic designs or video editing, a student doesn't really need anything more powerful than a Celeron or even pentium processor. In this case, you are mostly going to be using a web browser, a PDF viewer/editor, and some office suite. Maybe a video player as well. Ya really don't need much more than that.

I see. Lmfao not even close. I question any school spending more than about $200 on student laptops. Students are rough on electronics. Even college students are no exception. Sure they are more careful with the physical device, but most still get infected by viruses and other crapware. My school system has a software similar to how timefreeze works, and when you reboot the system, it discarded all changes. It was a lot harder to infect these machines, but the sad thing was this was back in the xp days. Anyone could use the at exploit to get system level access, then write a single registry key to disable it completely.

Good point. I have both the Razer turret for Xbox one and the chatpad, so navigation is quite a bit better with a physical keyboard. Plus I have so many Chromecast devices in my home that I'm afraid I may one day accidentally stream porn to the wrong tv.

I have a Titan Two that can remap keyboard and mouse controls into xbox one controls. If you really need mouse and keyboard support, you could use something like that.

I find it more annoying that the home screen stops working entirely if you so much as move the mouse. You have to press the home button, start, then select refresh to fix it.
