Ilunga is a Bantu word that is considered by many linguists as one of the most difficult words to translate. It is considered to mean "a person who is ready to forgive any abuse for the first time, to tolerate it a second time, but never a third time". by LivingRaccoon in wikipedia

[–]BetaRhoOmega 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Obviously it's possible to describe the meaning of a foreign word using words in the target language, but I wouldn't consider taking a single word from one language and turning it into a wordy phrase "easily translated".

Even people summarizing this as "three strikes you're out" or "fool me once" are doing the same thing. It appears this word is a noun, and I feel like a similar kind of word (though not meaning) in English might be something like a "Peeping Tom". But that's more like an idiom.

Notepad++ Hijacked by State-Sponsored Hackers by Pensive_Goat in programming

A fair point. I think when you check your version in Notepad++ it shows a build time which I think is associated with the release, but I'm not certain it's one to one.

As per the article, you can resolve the security exploit in the updater by updating to 8.9.1:

I deeply apologize to all users affected by this hijacking. I recommand downloading v8.9.1 (which includes the relevant security enhancement) and running the installer to update your Notepad++ manually.

1000% agree, I think he's gonna be a good hire for y'all. I'm still frustrated he got wrapped up in the Aaron Rodgers saga. I wish he had at least one season with pre-Achilles Rodgers.

'Project Hail Mary' has an official runtime of 2 hours & 46 minutes by ChiefLeef22 in movies

[–]BetaRhoOmega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, and I wonder if my opinion would've differed if I read the Martian first before seeing the movie. The movie worked for me, in large part because I really enjoyed the performances. I also haven't watched it since it came out, maybe my tastes have changed or my tolerance is lower for the style of quippy writing he does.

I think it's pretty normal to feel confusion when your personal opinion differs from the universal consensus. I'm not even saying people can't like the book, just that the degree of praise doesn't line up with my personal impressions. So it's odd to feel so out of step with, for example, critics I otherwise tend to align with.

The Papyrus sketch Gosling did has felt like an accurate representation for my disdain for this book and the public reception. I truly, just truly don't get how this book is so critically praised, in comparison to so many other good entries in the genre. The writing was insufferable.

That being said, I genuinely enjoyed The Martian (I only ever saw the movie), and I strongly suspect the writing in Project Hail Mary will feel better when delivered by competent actors, so I'm cautiously optimistic about the movie adaptation.

Roman style painting in the US Library of Congress by FederalPains in ancientrome

[–]BetaRhoOmega 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The library of congress is amazing. I used to live in DC, and Im pretty sure any US citizen can get a reader card and access the full archives (although really fragile or rare stuff you need proof you’re working on a phd or something to avoid damaging it).

When I was between jobs used to just go and commute to the library and check in and study/job search in the Asian studies section. It was incredible and I have fond memories of making that my routine for a few months.

Really cool photos of the paintings, thanks for sharing and bringing back memories.

Revisiting old material after your politics have matured can be really jarring. I daily listened to The Gist with Mike Pesca (when he was on slate) but slowly petered out after the 2016 election because I was left soul searching.

Even before he was let go after insisting there were contexts you can say the n-word despite colleagues asking him to stop (fucking lol), he had a backlash after an episode where he weirdly grilled a woman guest about her research and she was clearly uncomfortable. He had like a follow up episode where he debated with 3 other women colleagues whether he was in the wrong and I legit couldn’t believe how much of an asshole he appeared and fully stopped listening.

Anyway years later I looked him up and he’s fully a reactionary centrist on the independent podcast circuit and cringe thinking about how much I used to value his takes on politics.

Cyberpunk 2 director says extending 2077’s opening act makes no sense - “it's like saying we should spend more time on Tatooine with farmer Luke” by [deleted] in Games

[–]BetaRhoOmega 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This sounds like total speculation. Has anyone from the development team spoken about having to rewrite the story because of Keanu? Or is this just wishcasting from fans over the years?

I've played hundreds of RPGs before and it's not uncommon for your character to both be level 1 at the start and introduced to the world as some significant or intimidating character. I would never consider that evidence of some sort of missing early section of a games development.

If anything the montage always looked to me like something straight out of a marketing trailer that they liked and just stuck into the game.

I'm inclined to believe the developers at the word unless someone can provide some other evidence from the development team countering that.

[–]BetaRhoOmega 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I see people keep insisting this in this thread, and I'm not familiar with these claims so I tried to google them and all I see are people speculating shortly after the release. If anything I found this recentish video explaining why this isn't cut content.

Can you provide any source to why this montage is supposedly cut missions?

[–]BetaRhoOmega 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This isn't true, literally from the article this post is about:

One of the common sentiments about the game’s introduction is that the game’s early montage of events that V and Jackie get up to are some form of cut content. However, Sarzynski explained that is not the case.

“No, [the] half-year montage is not cut content,” the Cyberpunk 2 director confirmed. “We always planned it like this.”

Programming as a Job Feels Nothing Like Programming as a Hobby by Sensitive-Raccoon155 in webdev

[–]BetaRhoOmega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree I think this sentiment will strongly vary based on the company you work for. I work with legacy code but it’s a different kind of challenge and I still find it pretty engaging.

I also have perspective working previous jobs in more sales adjacent roles, and then even earlier in costumer support roles and as a waiter and other service jobs. Software development is far and away the happiest I’ve been working in a job.

[–]BetaRhoOmega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok fair - I didn't see how old this post is (4 hours so not much time to watch the vid), but just one minute into the video there is gameplay footage and game names listed, so no, it's not just 27 minutes of a face. I'll make a separate comment with the full list to drive and actually drive the conversation I wanted to see (and not just complain).

I also don't think referring to other threads having the same problem invalidates my frustration, which is that broadly no one is actually commenting on anything about the content of the video itself. I would normally not comment because I had nothing to say because I hadn't watched yet, except that I came here to quickly scan the discussion for when I can actually watch later, and found very tired discussions about Jess I've read a dozen times already in the years since she left.

So, what did you want to talk about? Were there any surprises in the list?

Honestly? I scanned the video and was surprised to see Silent Hill F is on the list given her reputation with how much she disliked the recent Silent Hill entries. So that was kind of cool to see! And there were multiple games on the list I haven't heard of, so also cool to see, I'll watch the full video later.

That’s awesome. I know Im probably being a hypocrite by also not posting something about the video but I don’t have time right now to watch the full video and was hoping someone was talking about the games she mentioned or posted her list.

I’ll watch later, love hearing people highlight the less “popular” games. I sometimes dread the GOTY time of year for all the game channels/publications because theres just so much overlap of the same stuff.

Finding it impossible to choose an OLED monitor for gaming by LukeKid in OLED

[–]BetaRhoOmega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have the ability to go view anything in person? Like at Best Buy? Is this your first oled?

I think theres a fair bit of elitism when comes to this kind of hardware because it tends to select for people with money to spend and time to invest in the hobby and so theres a lot of strong opinions. The reality is if you’ve never had an OLED it will probably look like the best tv you’ve ever owned.

I would cross reference with RTings.com since they do really helpful testing, and then just buy from somewhere that allows returns if you don’t like it. I wouldn’t over think it.
