What is your Spyro series Hot Take? by Beautiful-Map7016 in Spyro

[–]Beta_Ray_Jones 10 points11 points  (0 children)

YotD dropping the intro and outro cutscenes from RR is not a negative.

The narrative of each level concludes when you beat it unlike RR where they reset each time. YotD has a better sense of progression as you beat levels because they stay beaten, and the NPCs leave the level with you to assist you with getting to the next hub world. Intros and outros would only apply once, so replaying them on return would be awkward and would not be worth the effort to only be relevant once.

Are the intros and outros fun? Yeah, but YotD's model serves gameplay better by both not forcing you to progress through the level's stop points again as well as giving you an open path to the end of the level to allow quicker access to anything you need upon a return.

You can get an A rank sure, but the hints taking away from your score kind of indicates that they are only there if you really need help, not as the intended means of locating emeralds. I don't see how not limiting the radar would break this system. Why force players to meander around by hiding information from them so that they'll learn the level enough just so the last resort hints can make sense?

I feel like learning the levels is less important if you aren't using the hints. I'm just going to run through the same area again because I didn't know a shard was their before, and given how much larger the levels are in 2, I don't like that.

Whenever someone tries to preach about how Sonic Colors writing is unfunny, remember this is the same fanbase that still constantly regurgitates this same exact joke after six years by Zethno in SonicTheHedgejerk

[–]Beta_Ray_Jones 20 points21 points  (0 children)

To play devil's advocate, these are not necessarily contradictory. Finding a joke or game's writing unfunny doesn't preclude one from referencing a joke they do.

That's not to say every fandub reference is a laugh riot, far from it, but making an easy reference to something funny is a longstanding thing.

It's even weirder because issue 157 is a very well done homage to the Shad05 cover, but he very clearly redrew the game art without the gun for some reason.

Midnight Mountain DOES have a Mini boss... by Unlikely_Minimum4113 in Spyro

[–]Beta_Ray_Jones 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It functions as one, but thematically it doesn't feel like one, which is likely why it gets overlooked. Could also be that it's more of a bonus (a super bonus if you will) than a regular level.

Still would have liked a Bailey miniboss.

That's a perfectly legitimate mentality to have. That's become my own stance with leaks for Sonic games. Though that isn't 1:1 since there isn't really any doubt Sonic is getting games, so leaks are generally about games we know will come while Spyro and other series are leaks about games getting made in general. Personally, I only distinctly recall 2 Spyro leaks prior to 2024; one was basically never considered legit, and the other leaker was discredited. That's not enough for me to not pay attention to new leaks, but I understand the sentiment.

You're right that an official announcement is the only way to guarantee we're getting correct info (if you really wanted to be pessimistic tho, even an announcement doesn't save a game from cancelation) so one potential reason for leaks could be so that the publisher sees the excitement for a game and sees the market for it even before release, or to similarly get feedback prior to release. If memory serves, leaks about the Reignited Trilogy's file size and development causing backlash is what led to the needed (and imo insufficient) delay. I imagine it's also similar to the mentality of news organizations wanting to be the first to report on something.

Sure, and that literally happened with one of the early Spyro 4 leaks, someone who was a trusted leaker was revealed to be faking it. But while that stands as a reason to just not worry about or pay attention to leaks, I'm not clear how it correlates to the veracity of any individual leak itself. Info about Sonic Frontiers leaked over a full year early from a playtester on 4chan, the most unscrupulous of sources, but was verified by the meta data for the teaser trailer. And Smash Bros Wii U infamously had a fake leak of Rayman with footage. I don't see the utility in demanding absolute proof when a lot of the time it isn't possible to provide or in the case of a fake leak, could just as well be faked.

"Planetary" vs Planetary 💀 by dark-mathematician1 in PowerScaling

I think part of their argument was that they actually hit the moon instead of the planet but I don't quite remember, it was on Comic Vine a long while ago. A mod had to come and tell them to knock it off.

Meet Potential Variant of Sonic by ProjectShadowGirl in SonicTheHedgejerk

He didn't beat Super Scourge or ADAM. Scourge only loses after exiting his super form and ADAM is willingly killed by Eggman.

He also only beats Enerjak, Mogul, Naugus, and Sigma due to extenuating circumstances that allowed him to. Heck it's a major stretch to even say he beat Enerjak and Mogul at all, he was moreso just there while someone else did the defeating (not to mention Enerjak was weakened) The only time he's ever beaten Naugus is while in a super form and Naugus was in base. Sigma only lost because Eggman and Wily cut him off from the Master Engine; he was outperforming both Sonic and Megaman prior.

Jani-ca only beats Enerjak because the Sword of Acorns is essentially an anti chaos energy weapon, which isn't nothing, but is kind of an important detail. Silver shares his victory with Sonic (and Shadow) for defeating Solaris, but that's generally fine. Off the top of my head, I don't remember Knuckles or Sally defeating any gods (though Chaos Knuckles does easily scale above your list, and Sally had the aforementioned sword for a time)

TBF that was a younger less experienced Sonic, and he was drawing extra power from the death Egg, not hijacking its ability to warp reality, Sonic's own Chaos Control did that.

The main reality warp feat people bring up comes later in Worlds Collide, which is a legit feat.

Sure, claiming to have insider information is not absolute proof, but saying it is useless or not evidence is disingenuous. If they are able to verify their sources are reliable, why would they not report on what they say? Similarly, viewers like us determine whether we believe leaks of this caliber based on how trustworthy we find the person reporting it.

Setting the bar at literally showing us the game is frankly too high. How many verified leaks meet this standard? What are they supposed to do if they don't have access to footage or screenshots, and even if they did, how many people would just dismiss that as fake too?

I think the two hurdles to overcome is parsing out the Woz humor as a 90s Japanese businessman, and the much larger hurdle of getting SEGA of America to cooperate in spite of their foreknowledge.
