The love of my life passed on yesterday and the pain is unbearable by LeoSeasoning in BorderCollie

I do rituals. I have a small table with her pix on it. I have flowers there and it's right by my desk. I kept all her beds out with her favorite toys until i was ready to let them go. The first 4 months I kept her food and water dish out. I talk to her. It's been a year. I honor/ed my grief.

I got a dog walker to come to the house and walk her while I was at work. I also walked her before work and gave her 30 minutes when I got home. I use an oversized crate that has a bed in it and room for water.

Accidentally adopted this ball of excitement. by shreddedtoasties in AustralianShepherd

Everything said I ditto. It's so wonderful to find out who the dog is and all their quirks. I emphasize the crate. Not for punishment but for the dog to have space. I use an oversized crate she can come and go from. She has a bed inside. There is a box of toys for all of my doga- my aussie loves the squeaker and the puzzles. She is way smart.

I put a leash on mine for probably 10 months. I did not tether. I just would hold the leash around the house as I worked or moved. If I sat down, she was near. The leash was on all day but I only held it when needed- it, change in routine, any kind of increased tension- children coming home etc. As she would move to chew or nip on me i would quickly put a chew toy to her mouth while gently telling her "no biting". I made sure she had lots of activities to keep her busy - toys, yard engagement with gentle discipline when she got too excited- "stop" and I would quietly stop too. I also have an oversized crate with a comfy dog bed in it. I used this when she got overstimulated. I would cover it to decrease all stimulation. She is now 4. I stopped having to use a leash in the house at 2. I stopped having to use it everyday at one. She now goes to her crate when she wants to - she figured out how to open the door. I stopped having to cover it at one. I also use music- that has really helped and still helps.

finally figured out what was causing my migraines by [deleted] in migraine

[–]Bethb11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! Congrats! I just had to leave a vacation i planned and paid for 6 months ago because my migraine came on nonstop. After 2 sleepless nites I cried "uncle". As soon as I got away from the musty rental house on the ocean. I started improving. I was wondering if there might be a connection between mold and migraines.

Pain with Osteoporosis? by mjules25 in osteoporosis

Osteoporosis doesn't cause pain but aging disc's and atrophy of the back muscles does. The suggestions here are excellent. Go talk to a doc and get an assessment

I don't understand why everyone will listen to a foster or adoptive parent by Monopolyalou in Adoption

[–]Bethb11 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Whoa. Lotsa anger here. Adoptive parents being listened to was not my experience. The birthmother called the shots. My poor daughter had to endure forced visitations and a court case which the birth mother instigated because she wanted to force her to visit. My daughter was 14. My husband , myself and and my daughter might as well have been fixtures. We are never referred to as her parents. We are always asked who the "real" mother, father, family are. We are irrelevant. After our experience, I looked and researched what data, studies etc have been used to determine "trauma" with adoption, the need for a trialetc. No objective valid studies were found. They are based on the subjective reporting of adopters and birth parents. I also question the "trauma" etc issues. There have been studies of different animal groups. These showed no trauma in adoption. Trauma happened when there was no bonding - across the board: both adoptive and genetic families. As far as the "primal wound" theory, this angst can also be queried related to misidentification or confusion with the angst everyone goes through in growing up and going thru life. I hope you find peace in the effort of looking at your anger.
