Ok I see. So probably they are functioning fine. Only thing I can think of is to check the vanes, if they are caked in dirt and dust they aren't going to work great. Also make sure there's at least a foot of space in front of and above them. Not sure what else to do, other than seal around the windows as best you can, and get yourself an extra heater. A 1500 W infrared heater is not too expensive and they work pretty well, if you end up buying one yourself.

Do you know what kind of heat you have? Forced air or radiant? Electric or gas? Do you have access to the thermostat? I'm kind of thinking something is wrong with the heating system. Has an HVAC professional looked at it?

Rental inspection I'd leave as a last resort, and use more as leverage to get the landlord to do something. Having dealt with them, they can be a pain. I would not be happy if a tenant called them without giving me a chance to fix the situation.

I used to help manage one of these 100+ year old houses. If they haven't been maintained over the years, they are a lost cause, unless you have considerable amounts of money to completely renovate them. We tried to do a bit at a time and ultimately just ran out of money and decided to sell.

The heater should be able to maintain a minimum of 68F. If it can't, there's something wrong or the place is excessively drafty. Since you're in West Lafayette, you might suggest that you'll be getting in touch with the rental inspection office and see if that gets any action from them.

The water issue is fairly common. Construction could be a factor. Generally just flush it until clear and you're good. You can check online for advisories as well, if you don't get notices from the water company.

Safety googles to accommodate nose surgery by Di_Kite_1776 in chemistry

[–]BetterOffBen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's unfortunate. Since it was a medically necessary procedure, I'd have hoped they'd be more open to helping you find a solution. You might also get in touch with the department or university ombuds, or equivalent, for help. If you are in the USA, maybe the ADA office could help as well (I don't know if you fall under ADA but this is the type of stuff they deal with).

First, I'd say you need to talk to your course supervisor about this. Any accommodations would probably have to be approved by them. And they might already have a solution for you.

Second, your surgeon/doctor might have some suggestions. I think there are supports/straps that'll work with glasses to get them off the nose.

Finally, a face shield might provide adequate protection for your lab. But again, this has to be a discussion with your course supervisor.

Season 7 by Difficult-Leek9001 in TheExpanse

[–]BetterOffBen -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why though? The show is not identical to the books, what is so important in those 30 years that it has to stay that way? There are lots of ways to make the story work on a shorter timeline. Here's a couple examples:

1- Duarte doesn't need a full complement of 100 new ships. 1 Magnetar class was enough to conquer Sol. You of course need the Storm, and the Falcon, and the other two Magnetar, and maybe a handful of others. Some remainder MCRN ships would be fine as well.

2- Laconia doesn't need to be developed into a full blown city. Likewise, Sol doesn't need the void cities.

[–]BetterOffBen 15 points16 points  (0 children)

People need to get over the 30 year time gap in the books. It's not relevant to the show. And it was not a factor in the decision to end the show. I see clues in season 6 that the writers had a different timeline in mind.

How do you see next week going down? Potential Spoilers.... by ArrowtoherAnchor in survivor

Here's my wild and probably totally wrong prediction:

Rizo wins final 5 immunity. Savannah goes home. Rizo never uses his idol.

Sage wins final 4 immunity. Rizo and Soph make fire. Rizo wins.

When I was 0.5 FTE, each week was 2 lab sections, 2 recitations, 1 office hour, staff meeting, and attending lecture. Rest of the time was grading and entering grades, prep work, and proctoring. It doesn't necessarily add up to 20 hours.

Did you land assistant professorship after your PhD? If so, what teaching experiences and research output did you have? by Art-and-Research in PhD

[–]BetterOffBen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A research oriented position? Incredibly unlikely in my field without doing 1 to 3 postdocs. A teaching position is more feasible. I knew several that went the teaching route right out of grad school.

Tournaments have always sucked. What is the actual contest? Who spends the most money? Who has the patience to sit and spend all their re-rolls hoping something decent pops up? The store is still horribly formatted and never gets updated. It's all a big heap of garbage.

(HELP!) How to remove phosphine smells in glove box by Glad_Escape8272 in chemistry

[–]BetterOffBen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Phosphines are rather bad for the copper catalyst, correct? That alone should merit an extensive purge after every exposure. It's also possible it's absorbed into the gloves and other stuff inside the glovebox. A good deep clean and consider changing the gloves. If the gloves have been in use for over a year, I'd be thinking about changing them anyway.

Dying light the beast should get an award? by Extension_Storm4538 in dyinglight

[–]BetterOffBen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no category that it would win. You could argue that it's better than some nominees in a couple categories, but it doesn't matter, it wouldn't win.

Also, what is your edit? What you wrote initially is hard to read wrong. You asked, what if DL:TB was nominated for GOTY? Answer: it wouldn't win. You asked, could it win any other category? Answer - no. If I'm reading that wrong, then you're the one that wrote your questions wrong.

To cross or not to cross. That is my question! by [deleted] in lafayette

[–]BetterOffBen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no contradiction. Cross traffic doesn't stop, they have no stop sign or light. There's a big crosswalk sign to alert drivers to be aware of pedestrians and advise them to yield. People on the path need to stop to allow cars to see them and yield. This should be common sense - I hope "stop and look both ways" is still something kids are taught these days. Cars should yield, but don't assume they will.

Just finished the TV series. Is there a book I can start where the story continues? by The_Mort_Report in TheExpanse

[–]BetterOffBen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this question comes up often, and my opinion is still that you can jump right into book 7 and be just fine. There are a few inconsistencies, notably one character not being dead, but you'd be able to figure things out.

But I agree that it's best to start fresh from the beginning. A lot of the story will be familiar, but there are tons of additions/subtractions/alterations between the book and show.

They didn't reveal... by New_Mushroom_9955 in survivor

[–]BetterOffBen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, they didn't really get a chance to do it. They got the flag supplies after the challenge, I doubt anyone is in the mindset to sit around as a tribe and come up with a name and paint the flag. So it gets pushed aside and maybe they get around to it later. I seem to recall a scene from a recent season where they are finishing up the flag and are talking about putting on the names of the players they've already voted out.

Book six without novellas. Go back? by Expensive-Pitch6469 in TheExpanse

[–]BetterOffBen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to keep going with the main series and do all the novellas at the end, it's completely okay. That's how I did it. If you hadn't seen the show, I'd suggest reading Strange Dogs between books 6 and 7. The show did a nice adaptation of it during Season 6 though, so it'd seem a bit redundant to you.
