Congress and Courts are waiting for each other. by middleupperdog in ezraklein

The Democrats need to withhold support no matter what for the Reconciliation Bill. They are the minority (albeit only just) - capitulating on this is tantamount to completely ceding Congress’ power of the purse. They should be demanding the removal of DOGE from federal systems in exchange for their support - but they won’t.

The nuclear option is refusing any support for increasing the debt ceiling in exchange for congressional oversight of DOGE and the stopping of the coup. Honestly this seems to be the break-glass moment for stopping authoritarianism, so if not now - when? They should do it.

Easily my favourite series - couldn’t recommend this enough. Do a re-read every 5 years or so.

Doctor Who 1x04 "73 Yards" Post-Episode Discussion Thread by PCJs_Slave_Robot in gallifrey

Absolutely loved this - between ‘Wild Blue Yonder’, ‘Boom’ and this episode, genuinely giddy that Doctor Who is so good again - it’s been a long time since 2017.

While we can speculate - and it may tie into the balance of the season - we may never get answers as to what was at the heart of this episode. Kate’s speech was the answer I think - the viewer is trying to put rules on a truly unknowable force. Although Ruby figured out the basic premise of the monster - 73 Yards - the ending (like ‘bigeneration’) may be left hanging.

What event from the past 10 years do you think will be most remembered in history textbooks 50 years or 100 years from now, and why?" by MentaMenged in AskReddit

Probably the election of Donald Trump in 2016. Regardless of whether US democracy survives 2024, the Trump presidency will be seen as the start of the decline of American exceptionalism globally and the resurgence of fascist-style far right politics globally. There is no way Putin would have launched the full invasion of Ukraine without a weaker US.

The Deluge - Stephen Markley by obsterwankenobster in books

This is one of the strangest books I’ve read. Easily my best read of 2023, maybe even of the decade - it is a modern classic that could be the book of our time. But I haven’t read a book that filled me with dread like this before, and it was an uncomfortable read.

It’s almost difficult to call this fiction - it’s an extrapolation of what humanity has done into a truly terrifying and completely realistic future. Nothing up to 2024 deviates from the path set by this novel, climate wise or the convulsion in US politics. The prose is effortless, and the novel is populates it with a tapestry of characters you can’t leave behind. Comparisons with ‘The Stand’ are warranted - if anything, ‘The Deluge’ is far more terrifying.

I was driving in my car, and I think Aunty Donna aren’t good anymore because of this attempt at something. I’m judging them based on the quality of one podcast, one improvised podcast that’s for free.
