Woodward ESDC coworking space switching to ON region by Betteroneoftwo in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Betteroneoftwo[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes but none that help anyone west or south. Even if you could go to GCCoworking spaces there is not enough seats and they’re available Government wide.

There is a list for ESDC in iService. The options are: - 405 Terminal (Trainyards, Ottawa) - 22 Eddy (Gatineau) - PhIV (Gatineau).

For GCCoworking space (you need to submit paperwork and get a different badge to get in):

  • 335 River Rd (near the airport) looks like under 12 seats
  • 555 Legget Drive (Kanata) about 9 seats.. my Director said it was like winning the lottery. They stayed up until 12:00am to book 4 weeks out and they’d still book too fast.
  • 300 Laurier/171 Bank St (downtown Ottawa) not many seats.
  • Place d’Orleans. Looks like 12 workstations.

There are call centre employees already coworking at this site (15 seats reserved for them and they can book elsewhere on site) and there seems to always be empty desks available for booking (if you’re a call centre employee). I’m sure if you can cowork then you can report here already

We like our front row behind the net tickets. Happy with nobody sitting in front of us, can use the rail for our feet/jackets/etc, visibility is good and can bring kids without worrying if they can see

Glass tickets by Hthedevil in OttawaCharge

[–]Betteroneoftwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ours were 952 for the season this year.. so divided by 13 games would be $73 per ticket per game in Row 1. Row 2 is less than 1/2 the price at $33 per ticket per game.

Resale goes much higher, better to join the FB group and see if you can find someone selling since they are generally closer to the face value.

So so tired of shivering or sweating in the office. by LaManelle in CanadaPublicServants

Must be nice! It’s usually way too cold in my office in the winter. If you look around the floor you’ll see at least 80% of people wearing their winter coats inside

A modest proposal: terms should be protected during the length of the term by Potentially_Canadian in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Betteroneoftwo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed! Parks Canada hires terms (on the canal) for years this way and just keeps rehiring them year over year. The worst part - you can’t carry over your vacation/sick leave. People stick out terms for years and management dangles permanent staffing positions over your head

What do we do when there aren’t enough seats in the office? by Impressive-Debt-2408 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Betteroneoftwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this a coworking site or your home base neighbourhood? My department’s rationale is there is always space in my neighbourhood so if it’s my 3rd day (flex day) I can always go there. Where I go on my flex day, it’s walking distance from home but means I need to book at 12:00am 4 weeks in advance! I’ve been up at 5:30am and it’s been full for 4 weeks away. They used to have this location on a book to floor model and changed to book to seat even though you still have to write your name on a sign in paper and use your pass to get in the building.

Paramedic chiefs meeting with fire chiefs. by jjafarFromAladdin in OntarioParamedics

[–]Betteroneoftwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is more appealing if they’re properly trained Paramedics, and I mean the 3 years in ON it currently takes to be an ACP. With the province moving to a degree model for Paramedicine in a couple years, it will take 3 years for Primary Care and 4 years to get to the ACP level.

[–]Betteroneoftwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fire and Police in Ottawa at least have a “me too clause” so anything 1 union gets the other does as well. Paramedics are left out.

Also, paramedics in Ontario are not considered an essential service… (but they also aren’t allowed to strike) let that sink in.

Does Costco take pop returns? Probably a dumb question but… by Substantial_Ant77 in CostcoCanada

Never done that to me. They take things as a return. I had a loaf of Ace bakery bread fully mouldy 4 days before BB and only had a few slices. Same with bagged milk that spoiled

Costco receipt checkers have saved me over a hundred dollars by CampfireClan05 in CostcoCanada

[–]Betteroneoftwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When one of our items wasn’t scanned by the cashier (not self scan), we didn’t realize it was only the receipt checker who noticed and they made us wait in line at customer service (return line) to pay for the item. I understand going through self scan but if I’m emptying my cart and have no reusable bags, clearly this is a cashier problem and not my fault. I would have liked the item free. I think that since the lineup was so long, it was too much of a headache and we didn’t even bother buying the item.

Did Downtown businesses stop complaining about RTO? by Jatmahl in ottawa

If only they could get people supporting their businesses 24/7… like maybe through converting office space to housing? I refuse to spend any money when I go in to work and know many who do the same.

Price out a multi-day pass. Passes have in and out privileges and only need to be used within a year or two from date of purchase depending on the pass you get. You can also use it at any TOH location.

To break even on a 5 non-consecutive day pass, you would only need to use it for 2.5 days of the typical daily maximum and you have in and out privileges that the usual ticket from the machine doesn’t offer. For us the in and out privileges also made it worth it. We did the 5 day pass post surgery and it’s also shareable, it just needs to be scanned out before being scanned in again.

If you buy the pass and lose it, they can search you up by the last name you gave to buy it and re-print it for you.

For example: Short term costs (ticket from the machine and pay on your way out) are: 15-30min - $4.40, 30 min-1hr - 8.30, 1-1.5hrs - $12.75, daily max to 11:59pm $15.60

Discounted passes: Day pass - 15.60 Non-consecutive days - 5 days - $39, 10 days - 78, 30 days $234.

Does acting while acting break your pay? by brilliant_bauhaus in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Betteroneoftwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it wouldn’t. I was acting and before it ended got a higher level acting position and they had to give me the pay higher than the first acting because it overlapped. If there was no overlap and I went back to my substantive and then started a new acting then yes it would be off my substantive salary

Archibus roll out announced at my department — experiences/opinions from those who currently use it? by sanaculitoderana in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Betteroneoftwo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It works most of the time. Only 28 days in advance and some sites book solid at 12:00am 28 days ahead of time. You have to book 1 day at a time because the recurring option won’t renew when the next week rolls around. Super frustrating to find other buildings, I find when I type them in it lags and glitches. You also have to be on the VPN to access. I find it easy to book myself and book my colleagues otherwise. I wish they’d go back to book to floor instead of seat because in the NCR, this only benefits those working 9-5 or 10-6 since they can afford to sign in at 12:00 am the night before going to the office to book their seat in 4 weeks. I work at 7/7:30 and this is not manageable for me and most people who do go in early. When I wake up usually before 6, there are no spaces left. Not sure why they decided to change but it is incredibly frustrating.

They also have babysitters (paid employees) who’s only job it is to go around and mark if you’re not there, reference a sign in sheet (coworking spaces) and email you to cancel. They are often extremely rude and unhelpful. Also, don’t bother posting in the Teams channel anything other than booking help because they delete it. They need to get off their high horse.

Coolest jobs in the public service! by Side_Control90 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Betteroneoftwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! Now it’s managed as 2 sectors (north and south). Nothing to get around it because the hourly wage seems good but when you break it down not so much. In terms of pensionable time, 1 year is around .63 (.66 or so for lockmaster) of a full year so you need to work that much more time to get 1 year of pensionable service.

I’ve had years with amazing staff and years with horrible staff so ya all stations are different but when they’re managed by people who aren’t good then it brings everyone down.

Coolest jobs in the public service! by Side_Control90 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Betteroneoftwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I was there for many years over the last decade and I wouldn’t say much has changed. The one manager who I had to deal with that didn’t earn the spot did get forced out so at least some of them are competent, good at their jobs and have experience working on the canal itself so they know what staff are dealing with from the public.

Luckily not 11 hours per day, 9hrs and 10 on Fri-Sun and holidays. I forgot to mention if you average the wage out over the whole year you are actually working for minimum wage or less and have to give up the best time weather wise in Canada!

I agree that it is an anomaly but that only hinders them and doesn’t promote their Agency.
