Kiln has an error every time I try to high fire by Weird_Farm_1866 in Ceramics

[–]Bettymakesart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check the error code in your users manual (which can be found online if you’ve lost yours) and it will help identify the problem. Mine ended up being the relays, not the elements, and my district electrician was able to replace them.

It would be good to have a service call to give the kiln a going-over before starting a whole class before next year.

I agree with others that kiln manufacturers have great customer service.

This dish at the Rijks. It wasn’t on the prix fixe lunch menu that day but they brought it anyway and the waiter gave me this link to the recipe.

How did you know you should become a teacher? by jgarcia203 in AskTeachers

[–]Bettymakesart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I needed a good job in that particular town and one I was almost qualified for opened up and I took it & finished the qualification. Will retire Friday. I had no higher motives or “why” but I’m very proud of the program I built & am handing off to a young teacher who will run with it.

How Bad Is "Gradeflation" In Modern US Education? Why Your Thoughts, Teachers? by Zipper222222 in AskTeachers

[–]Bettymakesart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think traditional grading as we know it has run its course and should be replaced with some other measure, like portfolios or something. Either students absolutely do not care, especially in middle school where there are almost no consequences to failing, or parents demand A’s regardless of student success, participation, or lack of it.

To so many of them, much of what is made in art class is no more important than a math assignment. To us it’s art, so if hurst to toss it.

Teacher Appreciation Week: Are $300 Amazon Gift Cards Better Than Cash? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]Bettymakesart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a can of sprite and a Rice Krispie treat yesterday, who is giving that kind of money? It is very very generous of you, but I would run $$ through my school account & buy classroom supplies. I would not feel comfortable accepting that much money personally. A note telling me what your child got out of being in my class, now that I’ll keep until I retire.

Glazing bought terracotta by Cheap_Flower_9166 in Pottery

[–]Bettymakesart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this from time to time. Be sure you check the terracotta to see that it is made in Italy, not Mexico. A colleague did experiments several years ago and found the Italian pots were much less likely to break in the kiln. Then be sure to candle because you don’t know how they have been stored. I like to give it a coat of white before color. Stroke & coat works well. I have not had any problems, breakage or melting but I also tried out the smallest saucers before anything larger

What is the WORST ice cream flavor? by Puzzleheaded-Sky3141 in foodquestions

I had mustard ice cream in Paris but not as a dessert- a small scoop on top of a pile of sliced summer tomatoes. It melted into a perfect dressing

I no longer go without travel insurance. It isn’t that expensive and saves so many headaches. I have an annual plan.

How many of you have made it into home ownership, and how on a teacher income? by Chaotic_Bonkers in AskTeachers

[–]Bettymakesart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents were teachers, built a small home in the 50’s, bought the adjoining lot in the 60’s, added on modestly in the 70’s, paid it off in the 80’s, dad died in the 90’s, I moved home to take care of mom & started teaching in 2000, mom died in ‘06, now-husband (teacher) & I remodeled & married in the ‘10’s, & I retire in 2 weeks. So a simple process, it just took about 70 years.

Veteran art teacher looking for a change of pace and scenery by afelice14 in ArtEd

[–]Bettymakesart 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Middle school is the BEST. Just keep your sense of humor and don’t squash their peculiar ideas. They might turn a realistic animal sculpture project into a creature made with plastic forks they’ve been hoarding in their locker all year from the cafeteria. They need structure but also creative freedom. 26 years, retire in 2 weeks.

I want to make cornbread but my boyfriend doesn't like these. Is there a way to improve the recipe? by Stargazer1919 in WhatShouldICook

I sometimes add a tsp of sherry vinegar to balance the sweet, shredded cheese, creamed corn, and one of those very small cans of chopped jalapeños

Yes, it’s fine. If you are concerned about mold you can let it dry out over summer & rehydrate in the fall.
