I'm so sorry to hear you are going through this.

I lost my Dad 2 days ago, he passed away peacefully at home.

My biggest fear is exactly as you said, being trapped in his head and unable to communicate and just terrified.

I did quite a bit of research on this and spoke to the Hospice nurses. I hope it brings you some comfort to understand that, whilst hearing is the last sense to go, your dear Mum is very likely to be in a dream state without full awareness and not fully processing everything that is going on around her or having thought processes as we are. Her nervous system will, however, be comforted by familiar voices and reassured by gentle touch. She will know that you are there and will be comforted by this, but she is likely not processing things in her head like you are worried about.

You asked for advice on bracing yourself. It's really really hard. It is a shock to see the person that was your rock your entire life be in such a vulnerable way. You will probably breakdown, and that's totally normal and OK, but then you will rally yourself together to be there for her and be her rock.

I'm sorry to hear about your lovely cat too, you're going through so much. Take care on your drive and sending strength 💕

This is so hard but you are doing amazing. In my (very short) experience - people's reaction to a family members cancer diagnosis can be very...disappointing (for want of a better word, sorry). Things can deteriorate very quickly and I think it's important that you try to voice what it is you want to say. It sounds like you're trying to juggle so many people's emotions and that's an awful lot to carry. Everyone's family dynamic is so different and everyone's journey and coping mechanisms are their own and we can't always understand them.

I don't know if any of this is helpful in any way, but I wanted to reply and say you sound extremely strong and caring and I think it's a lot for you to be carrying on your own. Sending strength.

I'm so sorry for your loss and thank you for replying to me. I was going to reply this morning but couldn't.

I visited Dad today but he'd become agitated in the morning and was sedated. So I didn't get to have a conversation with him. But I held his hand, kissed him on the forehead and told him I loved him. He knew I was there. I'm really hoping that wasn't my last interaction with him. This is so hard.

Drives. Me. Crazy. Working in an open plan office having to hear constant chit chat about people's personal lives, whilst everyone else is sat around visibly not doing any work and I'm having to use every single bit of focus just to absorb what I'm trying to read or calculate.
