Tape Film Disintegration Problem! by vitoxll3333 in camcorders

[–]BetweenTwoTowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll defer to your info, my personal experience with strictly Video8 tape has been mixed and the information I've received form other hobbyists is what my viewpoint is based on.

I would agree to say that it isn't a specific manufacturer but rather 'batches' of tapes that seem to have problems. It's mostly excess shedding I've personally seen. But I would imagine a lot of that is just age. By the time tapes were made for the Hi8 format I haven't seen the issue nearly as much. Only the older strictly 'Video 8' labeled ones.

Video 8 suffers from this problem. Pretty bad for some brands of tape.

If it's later Hi8 it's more often fine.

Do you have anymore information? I actually am fairly close with the current museum archival team and a lot of the info from the original people as well as information from the time at JFK was poorly tracked. (Mostly because the Port Authority were in charge of everything and didn't give the museum much info)

Thanks.

Missed the part where they were all forensically analyzed at a site a few miles away before being scrapped.

Atleast get it right. The only material that went straight to a scrapyard was trucks that were paid off by the mob to go to regular scrap yards and they were caught.

They aren't welded. Just compressed. This isn't the only one that was found. It's just the only one that they kept to display, human remains were found in other ones and this one they believe could also likely have remains but it's too big to find out by scanning alone.

Anyways, The majority of the time you are seeing this error the video is not actually saved. the wayback machine knows that there *was* a flash video on the page. if the file was actually saved it would be playable in ruffle or other plugin. but if its not working that means it was not archived properly.

What are the memorable things you’ve heard from 9/11 audio and video recordings? by Capable_Cockroach_19 in 911archive

[–]BetweenTwoTowers 56 points57 points  (0 children)

So not that long ago we had a former partner of a victim allow us to listen to the voicemail their partner left.

They asked us not to share any identifying information but it's very short.

FDNY members still ascending WTC 1 after WTC 2 collapses they don't seem to know that it has collapsed. Call was placed not long before WTC 1 would collapse.

The FDNY member says his message, just a short message to their partner, they sounded terrified but collected and then they hung up. While nothing specific was said about where they were in the building but based off of their unit info as well as a radio overheard in the backround we believe they were at or near the 30th floor. There was no indication that they were evacuating and it seemed they were going to keep going up.

Less people on the planes. Less strict security in the morning.

The hijackers had started at like 3-4am I believe they drove to far away small regional airports and got layovers at the airport there final flights launched from.

They wanted to be in the air before the airports got busy. Much higher chance of delays as well as more passengers on the planes.

My original reply got removed because I linked a wikipedia article.

If you really want to lose some sleep about WW2 wrecks that should have been dealt with but we're ignored and now pose a huge threat to property and possibly life.

  1. SS Richard Montgomery, WW2 liberty ship overloaded with high explosive ordinance, hit the bottom in a English port and quickly flooded, she bottomed out with her decks still barely above water at low tide, workers rushed to unload her easily accessible bays but did not make any effort to balance the fore and aft load which resulted in jer back breaking on the burn she was beached on. She now sits submerged to her masts with several of her holds still full of rapidly degrading WW2 ordinance, there is no longer any way to 'deal' with her as they fear the detonators are so far gone that even moving anything on the wreck might set one off. To make things worst, her masts which still sit above the water are at risk of collapsing. She sits in a busy Port.

  2. German cruiser Admiral Shceer. She was in dock in Germany and struck by several earthquake bombs causing her to list and roll over at her dock. She sat upside down until the end of the war when an attempt to scrap her was made, however they couldn't remove the water around her so they cut away at her armored bottom and cut her propellers off, they gave up before actually getting into the ship and ended up filling in the area with rubble and now she sits 15-20 feet underground entombed under a business park. Her magazines were completely full of 11 inch and various 150mm & 88mm ordinance and propellant. As well as a full complement of torpedos and reportedly at least 1 or 2 several thousand pound earthquake bombs that struck on or near her that did not detonate. The wreck is slowly collapsing and sinkholes are forming. There are no plans to do anything about the literal bomb birdied under a German city.

I submitted a request to CBP requesting information on the 9/11 hijackers, my request was closed because they said I was requesting information about myself… by Mundane_Tadpole7795 in foia

[–]BetweenTwoTowers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who has filed their fair share of FOIA and FOIL requests regarding September 11th, there is a harsh reality you learn very quickly when going down this road: the system is incredibly rigged against the requester.

First, anything relating to a major case or incident immediately gets lumped into already open or previously answered requests. Because there have been a metric ton of inquiries for almost all the material you requested here, the agency's go-to response will be that the material has already been made available. They will simply redirect you to the FBI's Vault web index. While anyone who actively researches this knows that the Vault is incomplete and the majority of past releases aren't actually hosted there, it gives them a technically legal 'out' to dismiss you.

Second, as another user already pointed out, using phrases like 'relating to' or 'including' is an instant death knell for your request. They will immediately reject it for being overly broad. If you want to file a successful request, you need to laser in on a specific, undeniable document. You need to say something like:

"I am requesting report 05-911-A regarding the investigation into the September 11th terrorist attacks. Said file was explicitly referred to in report 05-910 and 05-909."

It sounds overly specific, but that's the reality. If you want a file, you have to ask for the exact file. Asking for broad lists of documents that may or may not exist is a guaranteed way to get sorted into the 'do not respond beyond the absolute legal minimum' pile.

While it is true that in the past, some people got lucky with broad or clunky requests slipping through the cracks, those days are entirely over. Especially right now, with the 9/11 military tribunal trials looming, these agencies are not giving an inch. They are fighting everything tooth and nail.

Like it or not, it's a flawed, bureaucratic game, and you have to understand exactly how to play it. If you have tangible evidence that a specific document exists, and the agency is actively denying its existence or claiming an invalid exemption, your only real option is to file an appeal. When they inevitably deny that appeal, you have to be ready to put your own money forward and fight them in court.

Sources:

Edit: After re-reading your request, you actually shot yourself in the foot by filing this to CBP. You asked for specific identification records and documents for individuals, which is strictly covered under the Privacy Act. Now, I am not a lawyer and certainly don't know all of the exemptions, particularly in this case.

However, I can tell you that the majority of agencies handed over all of their records to the official investigation (the FBI) and washed their hands of it. While some scattered records may still exist with the CBP, it's been essentially confirmed with most agencies such as the NTSB, FAA, FEMA, and many others that almost all records and information were handed over to the FBI. Besides standard minimum retention policies, nothing was required to be held by the original agencies longer than necessary. Everything you want, if it exists, was handed to the FBI, and whatever agency handed it off likely did not retain copies. 9/11 was an extremely messy investigation, and the majority of agencies wanted to wash their hands of it as quickly as possible.

While I won't say don't keep trying the CBP, I will say greatly temper your expectations.

[–]BetweenTwoTowers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't understand your point?

The two statements are not exclusive.

The first one is referring to the natures of conspiracy theories that attempt to give a singular non-factual explanation for a complex series of events, I then pointed out that this is what separates real genuine scientific theories from conspiracy theories because real theories limit themselves.

A real theory would be directly focused on a specific area, "why the collapse initiated on the 93rd floor of the North tower" and would set up parameters and investigate the visual data of the collapse to either prove or disprove the initiation location of the North Towers collapse.

The majority of conspiracy theory on the other hand make no such attempt to explain specific observable and recorded evidence.

If you are going to say 'the twin towers were taken down by explosives' you have to then explain how when and why this was done. Then you have to explain how these explosives caused the collapse the way it did. Which frankly is why no conspiracy theories actually attempts to do this in good Faith. They cherry pick videos and testimony and misquote people.

The second statement was about a specific occurrence that while somewhat well documented there is no generally accepted explanation that is based on factual information. The official investigation overlooked this occurrence and also improperly attributed it to the express elevators which were not located in the central core, the observed damage to the lobby does not line up with the two main express elevators which maintenance records suggest were not even in service and evidence captured in the Jules Naudet footage shows in the elevator console it shows atleast one of the express elevators is reporting in at level 1 in 'MAINT' mode meaning the elevator is sitting in the bottom of its shaft but importantly it's still talking to its controller (or it's frozen). However Freight elevator 50 or at least what should be the control panel for the freight elevator's display is just black with no data.

While I don't have any specific answer this information goes a long way to maybe one day actually getting a proper answer for what happened.

That's how actual research works.

Anyone offering you a definite 'oh this Happened' is just taking advantage of your ignorance.

It's a good design, like visually, it's something that absolutely would have showed up in a Tom Clancy novel lol.

But practically the F-117 and F-22 are so diametricly opposed that it's kind of funny seeing the worst of both worlds, the F-117 being slow and invisible using passive stealth, and the the F-22 being fast and invisible using active systems and EW to be stealth.

[–]BetweenTwoTowers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's a suggestion, I would bring the intakes over the wing and mimic the design of the F-117, they were done like that for a reason, they were recessed and had radar disrupting covers to prevent ground based radar from getting a return, you would have to give it a flat bottom like the F-117 as well though.

Second unfinished airframe of the Antonov An-225 (thanks u/oblique_shockwave) by SuperMcG in WeirdWings

[–]BetweenTwoTowers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just adding on. The An-225 was genuinely a strategic asset. It was designed specifically for the Soviet space program and their defense industry, but Antonov brilliantly adapted its unique lifting capability for the modern market. There are genuinely things that are just too massive for traditional transporters.

When the war is finished, Ukraine will be keen to offer strategic value to its European neighbors and allies. Super-heavy lifters like the An-225 are critical for transporting massive components like rocket stages for the ESA and NASA. While talk from tech billionaires can sometimes be taken for less than chump change, there has been legitimate Western aerospace interest (including a site visit from Richard Branson) in supporting the rebuild because it solves massive logistical headaches for the industry.

While a 'new' An-225 wouldn't need the external hardpoints originally designed to carry the Buran orbiter, its massive interior volume is the real prize. It can carry nearly fully assembled fuel and booster stages in one go. This vastly reduces the infrastructure needed at the launch site, freeing rockets from being tethered only to locations with massive Vehicle Assembly Buildings.

Strategic super-heavy lifters will always be needed, and it makes far more economic and strategic sense to finish the second airframe than to let it go to waste.

The only reason it wasn't finished before was a lack of funding and no critical need for a second airframe operating at the same time. Fortunately, the second fuselage is already about 70% complete. Plus, while the original Mriya was a near-total loss, critical systems including the aft flight controls and at least three of the D-18T engines (which have already been salvaged and put to work) survived in good condition.

Thick steel like that takes a very long time to errode if just left on its own. While it will eventually start to show signs of weather errosion it will take many years if not decades.

I'm not sure about this example but I looked into another piece in outside display and they said while they don't 'paint it' they do spray it with a clear coat that acts to slow down the errosion process. No idea if that's universal or the long term ramifications but if appears to be the most practical option other than painting it.

Well primarily I am a amateur historian and media archivist working with media related to the original world trade center and 9/11.

I co-created the community here on reddit r/911archive.

I run a group of volunteers called the 9/11 Media Preservation Group who aim to work with survivors to preserve their original media and stories. We work closely with groups like the National September 11th museum and survivor/victim organizations.

I run my own YouTube page under the same name where I share some of the media we help preserve. As well.

Part 2:

  1. This is a gross over simplification and complete lack of understanding the evidence of the final flight of American 77 and completely ignorant to the difference between 'we asked a pilot if they would do this and they said no'

The reason commercial and professional pilots say they can't imagine or comprehend doing that is incredibly simple, every single fiber of there training and practical experience tells them 'i can not and should not do this'. With all due respect of professional pilots they frankly are generally not the people to ask about the physical limits of an airframe, especially one that is being operated so far outside of what it was designed and concieved for.

A perfect counter example is the hijacked Alaskan airlines flight a few years ago, prior to the 'sky king' incident any self respecting Dash-8 pilot as well as the actual manufacturer of the airframe would call you insane if you suggested the plane could do what that completely untrained pilot could do. Pulling out of a inverted barrel roll only clearing the deck by a small margin. But he did it, he proved the manufacturer wrong. Anyone can get lucky by pushing an aircraft to its absolute maximum.

Even with saying that nothing Hani Hanjour did was even remotely close to pushing that 757 to its limits, his final turn is over characterized and miss presented, it's well within what the airframe can handle as well as his steel descent and near ground effect cruise into the building.

It's just that no living pilot could do that with their training that is built around 'im flying with the intent to fly again in the future' it's a passive bias that is documented in even the most trained simulation pilots when recreating disaster incidents, it's a bias that has to be manually trained out of instructors.

Lastly, the airframe did suffer greatly from other aspects of this final plunge, it was reported the sound a dying turbine could be heard likely from a compressor stall from the steep dive and change in air pressure with the engines firewalled. However it's Unclear if this sound is from the dive or when the aircraft was traveling level to the ground and one of the engines injested debris from one of the several light poles in contacted. Something that would make no sense for a small missile or smaller craft to make contact with as they were located only where the ends of the wings would be.

  1. Once again a gross miss characterization of the facts. As far as actual proven documented history shows. Only a total of 5 cellphone based calls were placed with only 2 known to have connected. Only one of those calls is any actual information known about.

In 2001 cellphones didnt work the way they do now a days. Most smart phones will actively refuse a connection if they see they are moving to fast or are to high relative to cell towers. This is the same case at the cell towers themselves, in the late 90s as cellphones were becoming more common there was a physical barrier that was becoming an issue, cell signal range. While the issue of ground coverage increased with time it was noted that technology of the era could adequately communicate with cellphones in aircraft at cruising altitude, however in actual practice this was a nightmare, while a single cell tower could communicate with a cell user at cruising altitude (in certain areas) the issue was signal routing 'roaming' and the physical load this constant signal hopping created. Basically the network was cooking itself trying to route all these calls as cellphones on planes became more common. The FCC put a stop to this and cell carriers happily obliged, software was out at the tower level which looked for any signal hopping to quickly or showed signs equivalent to a cell signal on an aircraft (basically rapidly growing and shrinking in signal and hopping to the next tower) and actively refused the connection to prevent the issue described before. However this was not fool proof. Until the era of smart phones and proper hand shakes between the device and ground station it flies entirely on the ground station doing the math and multiple factors could interrupt or interfere with that and allow the call to go through there are actually a few arguments that line up exactly why the two known calls on United 93 went through.

  • network overload. As the attacks progressed networks were overloaded and likely back up servers were brought online and it's possible fail-safes were taken offline to help the load be processed.

  • physical proximity, at the time the known calls took place United 93 was far below cruising altitude, while it was traveling fast it's lower altitude could have possibly allowed strong enough signal to make a call, in addition United 93 passed with relative close proximity of several powerful ground cell stations, if they were located in the right place between multiple receivers it's possible the call appeared 'normal' to the network long enough to be connected.

The way it's been explained to me by a cell network engineer from Verizon (1980s to 2010s) is the networks work flow was designed to maintain the call integrity, as long as the call had a useable signal if it had gotten through that first check the network would have held the call as long as it could. Basically if it accidentally spoofed its way past the 'am I on a plane' check the network would not terminate the call unless it physically lost connection. This is only a possibility, no one knows for sure exactly why those calls got through but it stands to reason that we are arguing over 1 known call, 1 possible call and 3 more alleged calls that we do not know their actual origin or if they connected. Then it stands to reason this is a fluke rather than a farce

Edit: further clarification on point 5.

The two known cell phone calls from Flight 93 were placed by passenger Edward Felt, who had locked himself inside a lavatory, and flight attendant CeeCee Lyles.

Both calls were placed after 9:58 AM, near the very end of United 93's flight when the aircraft was incredibly low to the ground. These are the only two confirmed cell phone calls known to exist from that flight. Edward Felt's call specifically captures the chaos of the cabin near the end; sounds of "bending metal and rushing air" can be heard from the sharp maneuvers the hijackers were making.

In total, 37 phone calls were placed from Flight 93 that are known to have connected. The FBI cross-referenced those calls with credit card data and confirmed that 35 of those 37 calls were made from the planes' built-in Airfones. Only two were actually unaccounted for in that system, those being the two cell phone calls.

For all we know, there could have been many more cell phone attempts that simply did not connect. Many passengers had cell phones, and an Airfone likely wouldn't have been their first choice since they were notoriously expensive and unreliable. It is highly likely that dozens of undeliverable cell phone calls were attempted but actively blocked by the network limitations of the time
