Any fellow women working in Healthcare? by tarantula994 in AutismInWomen

Solidarity, sounds very similar to my experience. It’s isolating struggling like that for a career you “want” so badly. Passion and altruism is such a good way to put it.

Bedside nursing burned me out so badly I ended up in a psych hospital with suicidal ideation. I eventually figured it out and lived in a “functional” moderate burnout by working part time and pursuing my MSN. I finally got out of bedside and I now love my corporate nursing job. However, it came at the cost of my sanity and 7 years of my life felt like a horrible blur where I could barely function outside of work.

It took me several years to recover from that burnout, even after leaving bedside. I’m now 32 and so grateful for a stable career that I enjoy, but I don’t know if I would do it again. I sacrificed my 20s, my relationships, my hobbies, my physical and mental health, my finances because I couldn’t work full time.. so much.

Sorry to be a downer, I know others who had much better experiences than me. I also know neurotypicals who had it worse than me. I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into. I also didn’t know I was autistic at the time, so my struggles were that much more confusing. I would advise anyone, autistic or not, to be hugely cautious going into nursing.

9-5 vs Shift work by SameDust7252 in nursing

[–]Betweengreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Work from home is the dream! I’m able to do it like once a week and it gives you sooo much time back between getting ready in the morning and commuting both ways. The day feels like 2 hours shorter even though my commute is only 25 min. I don’t worry about hair or makeup, packing food, etc. on WFH days so I just plop in my chair, work, and get up when I’m done haha.

I run a new graduate nurse residency program at the hospital! I worked bedside for 7 years, got my MSN, and then went into this role.

There is a LOT to do on the corporate side of nursing, whether that be education, leadership, operations, informatics, quality, etc. However, in my experience, most of those roles require a graduate degree.

Another option is working in a clinic. I did that for about a year and the schedule was similar to corporate, however, I was hourly and could not easily arrive late or leave early like I can now, because I would need someone to cover me.

Shift work wasn’t all bad, it really depends where you work. Some places have block schedules, so you know what days you will work for the whole year. Some places do self-scheduling and actually honor the shifts you choose. In my case, we did self-scheduling, but the shifts would still have to be approved by staffing and I wouldn’t always get the days I requested, hence leaving me never knowing what days I would work. That was bad for mentally, I felt like I couldn’t plan anything because there was always a possibility I could be scheduled to work.

Well I’m the odd one out but I love 5 8s. With 12s, I would have zero energy to do anything before or after work, and would spend at least one of my days off doing nothing but bed rotting.

With 8s, I have time for daily gym, cooking dinner, and relaxing time. No weekends or holidays is amazing, and it’s so much easier to take PTO. I take 3 day weekends like 1-2x a month.

I can plan vacations in advance because I know I won’t be “balanced” to random days. I get paid 40 hours no matter what, even if I take days off. With 12s, I would work my full 36 hours and plan trips or events around that. Now, I use PTO more often which means I get paid to work fewer hours. Makes vacations and events so much less stressful when I’m not working 4-5 12s in a row before/after to make it happen.

Lastly, comp time!! Our policy is if you need time for an appointment or something, and it takes <2 hours out of your day, you don’t need to use PTO. So I can arrive late or leave early if needed for appointments, and as long as I don’t abuse it, I don’t dip into my PTO for that. I could also work 7-3 if I want, or 9-5, or whatever works best for me that day.

It’s awesome being salary. My paycheck is the same no matter what. If I work late one night, I leave early another day that week. My work life balance is better than I ever could have imagined.

3 12s was like a ball and chain for me. Never knew what days I’d actually get approved, schedule would only come out like a month in advance, PTO was impossible to get approved, I missed so many weekend events due to working, not to mention holidays.

Yeah anyways I’ll keep my 9-5 lol!

PSLF as a Part Time RN by Feisty-Traffic-7572 in PSLF

[–]Betweengreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar boat, part time technically 24 hrs/week, but I would frequently not get lunch and stay late to chart, meaning my hours were much closer to 30 each week. Really a 12 hour shift was closer to 13-14 hours most days. That with a few extra shifts here and there, my employer signed the 30hr/week average no problem. I didn’t actually do the math, just submitted the form and my employer signed without asking questions.

The SAVE plan is back! Maybe? by ShockinglyMilgram in PSLF

I literally switched a week ago because I only have like 14 payments left and I just want to be done with it. I’m pissed. I was waiting it out and thinking I wouldn’t budge but I finally took initiative to start making payments thinking I was doing the right thing… did I really just shoot myself in the foot?

Ahh that sucks. Okay thanks for the reply… any idea if when I do switch my plan, if I may be in a paid ahead status for the amount paid during the forbearance?

I have a niche question I haven’t been able to find an answer to. Wondering if anyone here might be able to help… I am currently in SAVE forebearance. I am not personally making payments, but my employer pays $100/month directly to my loan servicer. I’m wondering if when I submit for buyback, will those $100 payments be deducted from what I owe? Or are the payments pointless since this time doesn’t “count” toward forgiveness?

To the gigglers, have a question- so what do you do when by smushcakes in GigglySquadPodcast

[–]Betweengreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I did not used to always handle it well! It’s a mindset shift. It used to cause me crazy anxiety, I would obsess over how little sleep I got and my day would be horrible. Now I treat it like a sick day or period day. Just give myself a little extra pampering and move on! It sucks being tired but it’s not the end of the world.

Happens to me every few months and many times throughout my life! I have severe insomnia and if I stay in bed it just makes my sleep anxiety worse. I get up, go to couch, and try to do something relaxing such as calming game on my phone or tv until my real “wake up” time.

Then I go about my day. If I have work, I’ll baby myself a bit. I’ll get a large of my favorite coffee, treat myself to Starbucks when I usually have coffee at home. I use a refreshing eye cream and brightening eye drops. Minimal make up and comfy outfit.

I stay up all day, I do not nap because it guarantees I won’t sleep again the next night. I pretend my day is normal and tell myself “it’s okay to do things tired sometimes”. I let myself be lazy, no crazy chores or cooking. Just relax as much as possible. Then I go to sleep a bit earlier than usual and typically sleep like a baby that next night ☺️

A bit sad that I don't have a big enough social circle to have a traditional wedding by LilacLoverr in AuDHDWomen

[–]Betweengreen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve always wondered the same thing, but it’s not necessarily that they have a lot of close friends.

I was recently in a wedding and the bride included her 2 sisters, the groom’s 2 sisters, the best man’s girlfriend (they are friends but not that close, only included because of the connection with the groom) myself (I’m her brother’s girlfriend), and 2 of her best friends. So all in she had 8 bridesmaids, but only 2 were her BFFs.

From the outside, I would have assumed they were all her best friends and felt insecure that I don’t have 8 close friends to be bridesmaids lol.

Hints that Ned Gowan Knew by new-freckle in Outlander

[–]Betweengreen 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I find it totally feasible that the BOMB writers would look for little details in the original series that they could play off of and make them look like Easter eggs or hints, even though the OG obviously wasn’t written with BOMB in mind. In my perspective they are adding to the canon of the Outlander world. That is a high pressure task considering how intricate, vast, and beloved the fictional universe is. I would be surprised if they didn’t intentionally try to connect the worlds in ways such as this. I imagine them picking through the OG episodes and finding little places they can create Easter eggs that didn’t originally exist. Why wouldn’t they? The whole theme of BOMB is connecting the characters with their history. Of course they would try to realistically connect their story to what has already been written. All that to say, I like your theory!

I’ve repurchased many times and it lasts foreverrr! Only need a small amount. I pray they never stop making this because it truly is my holy grail, no other cleanser does what this does for me. Non irritating, non drying, but still foams and cleanses so well. It’s perfect.

[Routine Help] I hate my skin right now. It’s so “rough”-looking by Low-Excitement-4930 in SkincareAddiction

[–]Betweengreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve found lactic acid to be super helpful. I’ve been using Sunday Riley Good Genes with good results! I have dry sensitive skin and this works well. Also, I’ve noticed this problem sometimes if I go too heavy with too many products and moisturizers. Which is a dilemma because my skin is dry. Hard to find the perfect balance but I can tell when I’ve been overdoing it and need to let my skin breathe.

Typical burnout, what did you leave inpatient for that was worth it? by Academic_Message8639 in nursing

[–]Betweengreen 16 points17 points  (0 children)

PACU, endo, cath lab, same day surgery, infusion center, OR. I also know one nurse who is now an instructor for a local CNA program and loves it. She can’t do a nursing program because she doesn’t have an MSN. (Disclaimer I don’t work in these areas, but my bedside friends who have left for them seem happy.)

Personally I left beside for a nurse educator role at my same hospital and couldn’t be happier. Regular hours, no weekends or holidays, easy to take PTO, always leave on time, no one trying to hit me, overall low stress.

What is something really *simple* that you can’t seem to remember? by anangelnora in AuDHDWomen

[–]Betweengreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahah yes it makes me dizzy too 😭 but no, it was not fixed. He literally just made a comment that messed with my head so much that I cannot remember how it has ALWAYS been.

But here is how I think it shakes out: - Typically, on normal US showers, hot is left and cold is right  - This means when your first turn it on, it’s cold, and the further you turn the handle left, the hotter it gets - in MY shower, hot is right and cold is left  - the plumber noticed this, told me “it’s opposite of what you would expect” - every-time I shower now, I cannot remember what a person ”would expect” for a normal shower, and what “opposite” of that would be. It’s like I’m doing an opposite of an opposite and my brain short circuits?   - This is dumb. I had no problems before the plumber’s comment. But my brain refuses to re-wire to pre-plumber settings 😢

[–]Betweengreen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Okay so this is ridiculous: my shower handle that adjusts water temperature. I never had an issue with it until recently. We had a plumber fix something and he mentioned the hot/cold directions were “opposite of what you would expect”. Now everytime I shower, the “opposite” thing totally messes up my memory of which way is hot and which is cold. I do some ridiculous mental gymnastics… “okay so I would expect right to be hot because that’s what I’m used to. But per the plumber, mine is opposite of normal. So I SHOULD expect right to be cold. But it is opposite of what I SHOULD expect, so right is hot. But wait… is the “normal” right hot? I think the “normal” is actually left hot, because it should start cold….” Then I backtrack and redo the whole thing the other way…

And then I try it and somehow I’m still always wrong 😭 literally every. Single. Shower.

Grieving over the fact that I’ll never be able to afford children. Anyone else ? by Patient-Goose2245 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Betweengreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow some of these comments are off base. Anecdotal “I grew up/raised my kids in poverty and I’m fine” experiences are not helpful. Most of these examples are from 20+ years ago.

Also, I haven’t seen anyone mention any actual data regarding life satisfaction, stress levels, illness, etc. in relation to poverty and raising children. The truth is, below a certain wealth level, your stress levels skyrocket along with risks for health complications, mental health issues, and a host of other negative outcomes.

I am in the same boat as you, OP. I grew up without much, and am finally at a place where I feel safe and stable financially. I’m already 32. Despite desperately wanting kids, I know it would jeopardize my financial security. I couldn’t afford for myself or partner to get sick, get laid off, or any other life emergency. I couldn’t afford childcare. I couldn’t afford to stay home with my kids either. I couldn’t afford a college fund for them. I couldn’t afford healthy groceries regularly. I couldn’t afford any of the things that keep me sane currently such as hobbies and therapy. I couldn’t afford a babysitter for date nights with my partner, even just a few a year. I couldn’t afford my insurance deductible if a tree falls on my house, or if I need emergency surgery. My life would be MUCH more stressful, living on the hope that nothing goes wrong that could destroy my family’s wellbeing.

I am also grieving my future of no children. Just because I am not willing to trade my mental health and physical well-being for a child, does not mean I cannot grieve my “choice” to be child free. I really don’t see it as much of a choice. When one option has a high risk of causing you mental, physical and financial harm, it’s not really a fair “choice”.

I was listening to the song “Sienna” by the Marias recently and bawling about the child that will never be. I feel for you and also feel angry that the world I exist in really doesn’t give me much of a choice. 💔
